Hello, my name is Joseph Franzo, runner up at YCS Indianapolis 2011! After not doing so well nationals I was determined to redeem myself by doing well at the next big event. I was also super exited to win the new prize card. Because I was one of the few to win the first ever copies of
Dark End Dragon I especially wanted to be one of the first to win the new Blood Mefist. I had tested a variety of decks in the weeks before Indy and I had narrowed my decision down to either Agents, Tech Genus or Plants. After some play testing with my friend and eventual champion Robbie Boyajian I found that although Tech Genus and Agents were both solid decks, the plant engine combined with Tengu and Hyper Librarian seemed too powerful. I felt Plants were the most powerful deck and If I could just make some main deck and side deck adjustments to help deal with the decks that gave the usual plant deck problems I felt I could do well and go far. I also messed around with Water Synchro for a bit but I felt the lack of defensive traps was something that would end up hurting me in the long run so I dropped that deck and I ended up with this:
I choose to main double seven tools and double
Dimensional Prison because I felt that some of the most popular decks would be tech genus or other plant decks.
Dimensional Prison is a quick way to get rid of those annoying tech genus monsters and seven tools would also help be deal with the dreaded
Horn of the Phantom Beast and
TG1-EM1 that tech genus players rely so much on. Now onto the report!
Round 1 vs. Scraps
Game 1: I opened pretty well with lonefire dandy plays and enough veiler and maxx c's to slow him down and prevent him from getting to his
Scrap Dragon. I slowly gained advantage and wore him down.
Game 2: He opens
Reborn Tengu 4 sets. I have a slower hand and I think I set a monster but found myself losing to my own
Solemn Judgment and a few horns a couple turns later.
Game 3: Is more like game one I was in a tough spot vs. his 2
Scrap Dragons I eventually pot into
Mind Control and
Reborn Tengu. I steal his scrap, blow both scraps and run over his beast with
Reborn Tengu.
Caius the Shadow Monarch ends the game shortly after.
1-0
Round 2 vs. Machina Gadgets
Game 1: He goes first with a gadget and some sets. I draw devris dragon, veiler, and moa with some removal traps, not much help vs. gadgets I can't deal with the pressure and the gadgets swarm gets me.
Game 2: I gain control with a huge black rose play and he cannot recover.
Game 3: More like game one I don't have much going for me. I tried to foolish for lone fire so I can play call and reborn shenanigans but he has the crow. Eventually it's down to him with a
Chimeratech Fortress Dragon and 2 cards in hand, to me top decking. In time I'm at 5200, he is at 3600. I draw poa into thunderking and tourguide. I play tourguide into grenosarus then crash with the fortress dragon search for lone fire and end. He draws to 3 in hand and goes summon gadget grab another pitch it for fortress number one then discards force for fortress number 2 and hits me for 6400 in one turn.
1-1
Round 3 vs. Tech Genus
Game 1: I lose to horns and
Reborn Tengu.
Game 2: I don't remember this game much I think he misplayed and I was able to capitalize with a thunder king.
Game 3: He opens no monsters and I open
Reborn Tengu and poke a few times. I eventually he kills my
Reborn Tengus and runs into a huge gorz that never left the field the rest of the game and beats him to zero.
2-1
Round 4 vs. Plant mirror
Game 1: He opens
Reborn Tengu no sets. I open trunade,
Debris Dragon, foolish
One for One veiler. I end up with 3 cards in hand, 4 sets, a librarian stardust, iron chain, and a librarian on the field. He draws to 6 and scoops.
Game 2: Opponent got a game loss for presenting his deck with a 16 card side deck.
3-1
Round 5 vs. Samurai's!
Game 1: I win the roll (thank god) and I also open dandy, torrential book so he isn't able to get shi en out. I summon lone fire, draw a ton with librarian/formulas and he cannot answer.
Game 2: I side into more anti meta (fossil dyna, thunder kings and kinetics). He gets the trunade, I draw none of the monsters I put in to deal with him, but a maxx c. He goes off. I draw into veiler and I have to veiler a kageki so I don't die but it doesn't matter cause I have no way to deal with his field despite having plus 6.
Game 3: I open with warnings and dusts and he cannot do much so I win fairly quickly.
4-1
Round 6 vs. Plant mirror
Game 1: I open lone fire reborn gain huge advantage with back rows vs. him not drawing so well so I win quickly.
Game 2: I side in crows and a
Chain Disappearance. I only saw the crows but when I try to maxx c and crow his plays, he has the
Debunks he sided in. He lonefire
Limit Reverses me and I scoop.
Game 3: I open terrible and I feel so bad cause my YCS journey seems to be coming to an end. I think my hand was double poa, veiler,
Debris Dragon, trunade and a
Caius the Shadow Monarch. I set the debris, he goes tourguide. I veiler, he slams into debris and I summon
Caius the Shadow Monarch next turn burn him for 1k then attack. he doesn't draw a monster and I trunade summon a top decked
Reborn Tengu and I win. It totally felt like I stole that one and was just happy to still be in the running.
5-1
Round 7 vs. My friend Ellis running agents!
Game 1: I go off with
One for One dandy plays and a warning. I warning his summon and kill him quick.
Game 2: This one was a grinder. I sat behind a set
Debris Dragon his
Gozen Match completely shut me down until I eventually drew my dusts and typhoons I don't really go off just push for small damage with thunder king. he gets out a Hyperion I kill it he has another but doesn't pop all of my field for some reason so I am able to
Mind Control just to clear the way for a direct attack and I win.
6-1 round 8
Round 8 vs. Gravekeeper!!!
Game 1:I had known what he was running because Robbie had played him earlier and told me about the match. I win game one with breaker and
Caius the Shadow Monarch helping me deal with his necro valley and gks.
Game 2: I side in catastrophes dusts thunder kings ryko and smashing. Its a slow grinding game but I get too low to fast my loosing a solemn battle and lose. Also he had oppression witch didn't let me do much.
Game 3: I know we get close to going into time.
Caius the Shadow Monarch and breaker play a huge role again as well as seven tools. I maintain field presence most of the game and I'm able to grind out a win.
7-1 round 9 vs. Hector Heras using Tech Genus
Game 1: I open Tengu Reborn, lonefire into
Pot of Avarice and I draw into multiple solemns.
Game 2: It goes back and forth but when I have a dead
Spore in hand a dandy in defence with a
Dust Tornado set he draw a rhino pokes at dandy I get tokens he sets a backrow, I dust it and draw into thunderking!!!!! I kill the rhino and beat him down with thunderking.
8-1
I finish 8th after swiss and head back to hotel for some rest.
Top 16
My opponent got dq'ed for having a card that had black marker on it so I got a free win.
Top 8 vs. Malefic Skill Drain (undefeated entire tourney until this point)
Game 1: He gets a little greedy and summons 2 gajiltrons. He gets me low on life but I
Dark Hole them and breaker takes care of his
Necrovalley so I can poa and gain control. I think
Caius the Shadow Monarch,
Reborn Tengu was my ending field to his nothing. Also double seven tools never let him flip a drain.
Game 2: I side in all my back field hate and thunder kings and just hope he doesn't get the drain going before I can get going. He opens malefic, stardust,
Dimensional Fissure,
Geartown and a set. I set
Reborn Tengu and a dust and end. He pokes and ends. I trunade, go into librarian, scrap with lonefire into
Spore, do a bunch of damage, set the warning and end. I know he doesn't run
Dark Hole so I don't have much to fear. He tries to summon a monster but I warning him and next turn I scrap my own dust and his valley, chain the dust on his set and win! I felt so good to get past that deck especially cause everyone said my deck could not.

Top 4 vs. The Gravekeeper guy from round 8!
Game 1: He was a good player so I wasn't shocked. I won the roll and I know breakers helped me with this one along with a seven tools. Hitting his valley so I was able to play my cards. I remember a bulb into
Caius the Shadow Monarch, went through removing his Recruiter and he had trouble drawing monsters after that.
Game 2: He doesn't open the
Royal Tribute (phew!). He goes set recruiter 2 back rows and plays valley, I set dandy, malevolent tools, and a dust. I didn't want to set so many but I felt the less I set the less likely he was going to attack me. But he does and loses all his sets and next turn I
Caius the Shadow Monarch his recruit again. It goes back and forth for a bit but he eventually runs out of monsters and I win.
Finals
At this point I'm really happy me and Robbie eliminated the competition and now we got to play each other casually in the finals. I didn't really care about the win. I promised my girlfriend an ipad the night before If I won it so second place was just as good as first for me!
Game 1: He goes first and set 3 back row. I don't have much and next turn he lonefire reborns me, makes a stardust, draws a ton and I cannot deal with the stardust.
Game 2: I knew he sided into anti meta but I sided into the crows because I though he would try to juke me by not siding into antimeta. But he did and I drew so terrible his dyna completely shut me down and I drew crow after crow into veiler after veiler I get beat down pretty fast.
Overall the weekend was amazing. Who would have thought 2 buddies that came to the event together would also meet in the finals!!
The only thing I would change in the main deck would be:
-1 vieler, + 1 tourguide
And in the side:
- 1 ryko, + 1 fossil dyna.
The mvc (most valuable card) of the side had to be thunder king and
Dust Tornado especially vs. those annoying slow decks like gks and tech genus.
So there is my tourney report for gen con Indianapolis I hope you enjoyed it. I look forward to traveling to future events meeting new players and watching the game I love grow!
