Hey guys, my name is Luis Zambrana, Top 8 finisher at YCS Indianapolis 2011 at Gen-Con! I ran
Skill Drain Beat Down in the tournament. The reason I decided to play this deck is I knew the majority of players would be playing Tour Guide Plants or some plant variant which is my easiest match up and I played it four times in swiss. My deck devastates plants with
Necrovalley,
Royal Tribute,
Thunder King Rai-Oh, and
Skill Drain.
Necrovalley locks down powerful cards like
Debris Dragon,
Spore,
Limit Reverse,
Call Of The Haunted,
Monster Reborn and
Pot of Avarice.
Royal Tribute on the other hand absolutely destroys them since most plant variant play 20 or more monsters!
Thunder King Rai-Oh puts in work also making their
Pot of Dualitys useless and stops
Sangans searching effect.
Skill Drain just helps all my creatures and makes all of theirs useless just like in other match ups like Agents and Gadgets. Now let's move on to what I did to get myself to the top cuts, and I hope reading this article helps you get to the top also!
Lets start with how I prepared for this event because preparation is key in success. I started off by building a solid build for the deck because you have to just continue to test and test and make changes till the deck is perfect, I had to have made over 20 changes to the deck over the 2 months that I tested it. Most importantly is you have to stick with the deck you cant just play it in a couple of locals and lose and then just want to quit; you just have to stick with it ‘till it gets better. Then when you think you've got the perfect list, the testing doesn't stop there. You have to continue to play the deck and get more comfortable with it. After that, when you know it's where it needs to be as far as how good the deck is, you're ready to play in high level tournaments! Another great thing that you can do and that I did before the YCS is look up every ruling for the cards in my deck. This is great to do because you know that much more than your opponent and you can use the rulings to your advantage. Now here's more about the deck!
My decks easiest match up is Plant variants which was explained earlier. Now its main problems are Tech Genus and Gadgets. The reason is those are decks that will never lose advantage against my deck. I found my main problem with Tech Genus was
T.G. Rush Rhino. The reason is if I don't have
Skill Drain he becomes 2000 when he attacks which gets over my
Beast King Barbaros and
Thunder King Rai-Oh, and even if I do have
Skill Drain all of his monsters can still use their searching ability. Also TGI-EM1 allows them to take control of my high attack creatures which was also a big problem. The same with Gadgets, if I don't have
Skill Drain they can get over my creatures with Utopia and use all their Gadget effects and lock me down with
Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo. A problem with both decks was all their answers to my creatures and my attacks and I don't have a lot of cards to stop their monsters and attacks. So the deck has a lot of advantages but has a lot of problems too. So keep all this in mind if you decide to play the deck. Make sure to check out my deck profile on
yugioh-card.com for even more info on the deck. Next is my deck list and my Tournament Report!
Tournament Report:
Round 1 vs Gladiator Beasts
This is why knowing your rulings are key!
Game1: I grab
Geartown with
Terraforming and then set
Skill Drain and
Solemn Judgment. He summons
Gladiator Beast Retiari and attacks, I play
Skill Drain and he doesn't know that you can still tag with
Skill Drain on the field. Him not knowing this ruling leads to his defeat.
Game 2: I open pretty bad with
Ancient Gear Gadjilitron in my hand and no
Skill Drain. He gets set up and I couldn't come back
Game 3: I get
Skill Drain with
Thunder King Rai-Oh and he still doesn't know that he can tag with
Skill Drain on the board. He forgets about
Skill Drain and goes into
Chimeratech Fortress Dragon at 0 attack and I beat him down for game!
1-0
Round 2 vs Tour Guide Plants
Game 1: I drop
Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon and Thunder king, then
Royal Tribute 3 monsters in his hand and set
Skill Drain. His other 2 cards were
Pot of Duality and
Limit Reverse, both useless.
Game 2: He gets a bunch a Syncros and draws a ton and I had no way to stop it
Game 3: Same as first game except I
Royal Tribute his whole hand!!!
2-0
Round 3 vs X-Sabers
Game 1: He makes the mistake of letting me smack him with
Malefic Cyber End Dragon and pays for it!
Game 2: I make a huge mistake of setting cards without
Skill Drain. He ends up dropping Hyunlei, blowing up all my back row and drops double Faultroll!
Game 3: This game was a bit more back in forth. We keep exchanging hits until I get
Skill Drain and
Necrovalley and lock him down he tries to stall with creatures looking for
Giant Trunade but I end up beating him before he can!
3-0
Round 4 vs Plant Synchro
Game 1: He starts of great, but lets me hit him with a
Malefic Cyber End Dragon. He gets rid of it and he had to have had like a 5 card advantage, but earlier let me hit him for 4000. so I bring out my only option,
Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon, and he cant use his answers against it, and I come back to beat him down with it!
Game 2: I run into a Utopia that I can never kill with his seemed like infinite back row.
Game 3: I drop the lock down! I play
Thunder King Rai-Oh and
Necrovalley with a set
Solemn Judgment and
Skill Drain. GG!!!
4-0
Round 5 vs Six Samurai
My opponent shows up late and gets a game loss
Game 2: He decides to drop Shi En and Grandmaster first turn and he lets me
Geartown into
Necrovalley into
Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon and he loses from there. So no game 3 cause of the game loss.
5-0
Round 6 vs Mirror Match!?!?!?
Game 1: I open
Royal Tribute get rid of all his big monsters and beat him down with my big guys and since the deck plays no answers I had nothing to worry about.
Game 2: I drop
Malefic Cyber End Dragon first turn, doing that means he cant play his Cyber Ends or Stardusts Cause there can only be one Malefic on the field at a time. So once again no answers which leads to a quick 2-0 victory!
6-0
Round 7 vs Tech Genus
You can check out our feature match on
yugioh-card.com for play by play on the whole match
Game 1: I make a big mistake by summoning 2
Beast King Barbaros and I attack into a
Mirror Force, but I activate my Seven Tools and of course he has his own and knowing he has
Solemn Judgment face down there is no point in activating mine so I get beat down for game.

Game 2: I play Thunder King with
Safe Zone face Down. He summons Rhino and attacks. I protect Thunder King with
Safe Zone. Then next turn play
Dimensional Fissure and run over Rhino. I drop
Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon and he cant get out of it.
Game 3: I play Malefic Cyber End and have 2
Dark Bribes set so I attack. He
Dimensional Prisons and I
Dark Bribe and hit him. Next Turn I attack again into
Dimensional Prison and save myself with my second
Dark Bribe hitting him again. He
Chimeratech Fortress Dragons my Cyber End. Next turn I attack into double
Horn of the Phantom Beast with my
Beast King Barbaros, things were looking terrible. So then he hits me with
Chimeratech Fortress Dragons and tengu. I draw
Geartown with
Necrovalley in hand and bring out Gadjiltron Dragon. He cant stop it. He summons Tour Guide and forgets to XYZ summon and I smack him for game with Gadjiltron Dragon. I barely win.
7-0
Round 8 vs Mirror match again!?!?!?
I'm like, “are you kidding me, mirror match again?”
Game 1: He opens godly. He drops double Gadjiltron Dragon first turn with 3 back row to my 3 Pot of Dualitys, so yeah.
Game 2: I
Royal Tribute 4 creatures and he draws next turn and concedes!
Game 3: He drops his Cyber End first so I cant play mine so I summon
Beast King Barbaros and stall with him in defense with
Safe Zone, and he beats me with BIG BANG SHOT!!!!
7-1
Round 9 vs X-Sabers 7-1
Game 1: He was overwhelmed by my big monsters and had no idea what to do with
Skill Drain on the board.
Game 2: He opens the god hand with double Faultroll and Hyunlei just like in my earlier match and wins.
Game 3: He
Trap Stuns with Hyunlei blows up all my back row and already had Faultroll on the field with a bluff face down, so I'm like, “ok it's over,” but then he plays
Closed Forest. I had Malefic Cyber End in hand and I used his
Closed Forest to Play it and Beat him down for like 5 turns with it!
8-1
DAY 2:
Top 16 vs Tengu Gadgets
Game 1: I was really nervous but still played decent. But being nervous killed me so I lose
Game 2: I talk myself into forgetting about losing, and I'm not nervous anymore. So he drops a Gadget and
Jinzo and I Chimeratch Fortress Dragon his field for the GG.
Game 3: We go into time. I have Thunder King equipped with
Safe Zone with
Skill Drain active! Then I Drop
Malefic Cyber End Dragon and
Beast King Barbaros and beat him as low as I can to 1200. Next turn he
Dark Holes my Cyber and Barbaros and
Safe Zone saves Thunder king. He Plays
Cyber Dragon I can't negate because I know he has
Mystical Space Typhoon for
Skill Drain, so I don't negate and he Mysticals
Safe Zone Destroying Thunder King. He summons a Gadget and uses
Ultimate Offering and drops another and beats me down to 1100 then he
Contacts into
Chimeratech Fortress Dragon at 0 attack and he loses cause of that.
Top 8 vs Tengu Gadgets
Game 1: I get lucky and he has no answer to Gadjiltron Dragon so I beat I him down with that.
Game 2: He
Enemy Controllers and I stop it but he has another
Enemy Controller to take Gadjiltron Dragon for the game
Game 3: I drop Gadjiltron Dragon and Barbaros with
Solemn Judgment and also
Royal Tribute 2 monsters out of his hand. So I'm thinking I've got the match, but he waits and runs into his only answer,
Compulsory Evacuation Device, to get rid of Gadjiltron Dragon and I lose cause of it.
I was completely shocked that I lost that match but what can you do. So all my testing payed off!
I honestly would not change the deck at all and side deck is a personal preference I think.
I hope reading this helped you a lot, and I hope you use all this helpful information. I promise results will show if you use this help. Thanks Guys. I hope you enjoyed the article and I hope to continue to write articles for TCGplayer. Thanks!!!
