Setting The Stage For The 2014 YGO Series Championship!
10/25/2014 10:50:00 AM
For the past year duelists all over the United States have been earning their MaxPoints in TCGplayer YGO Series events. This weekend's Championship right here in Indianapolis is the payoff; the final showdown in the first season of the TCGplayer YGO Series, and competitors with high finishes at the end of today have an excellent shot at scoring some serious prizes on Sunday!
Here's how it's all going down: Day 1 today will be played as nine rounds of Swiss Constructed Format play. Any player with 21 points at the end of the day (3 points for a match win, 1 point for a match draw) has the opportunity to come back for the second day of the tournament. From there we'll see two more Swiss Rounds in Day 2, and from there a cut to Top 16 will be made. Those remaining sixteen duelists will vie for the 1st Place prize of $3200!
The best part? Under normal circumstances it only takes 20 MaxPoints to enter, but individuals with extra MaxPoints can put them towards some early round byes! 40 MaxPoints allows you to skip the first round; 60 MaxPoints means you can skip the first two rounds; and 70 MaxPoints grants you the ability to sleep in (the greatest advantage you could ever ask for). The Sleep-In Special - which you get with 70 MaxPoints - means you don't have to show up for the Round 1 player meeting.
That's super awesome, but the byes are useful for another reason: the early rounds are usually where you'd face lesser known rogue strategies, which could take even veteran players off guard. Skipping those early rounds gives you a better chance of not playing against those random themes you're not prepared for - a gigantic edge for someone main decking outs to the top strategies. It almost guarantees that you'll only be dueling against Burning Abyss, Shaddolls, and Satellarknights, and gives you more incentive to play copies of De-Fusion, Super Polymerization, or Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror into your Main Deck.
In short, the Sleep-In Special changes everything.
It's going to be a great weekend here at the Indianapolis Convention Center, where 66 qualified duelists will be competing for their share of the $10,000 prize purse… including star players like Alex Vansant, Jeff Jones, Desmond Johnson, and Patrick Hoban have made the trek to hopefully win some cash. Burning Abyss and Shaddolls seem like the clear frontrunners of the tournament, but rogue options such as Madolche, Dragon Ruler Plants, Atlantean Mermail, or Batterymen also have a shot at topping. It's anyone's game, and over the next two days we're going to see some awesome matches!
