Market Watch: Gadgets On Top & Championship Fallout

Another Friday, another Market Watch, where we count down the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer marketplace to see what was hot this week, and what the numbers say about upcoming tournaments and new releases.

This time around the landscape of the week was defined by five big factors: the YCS just this past weekend in Mexico City; the Ultimate Duelist Series Championship in Chicago; the October release of Structure Deck: Seto Kaiba; the continued enthusiasm for Different Dimension Demons, spurned on by a new press release about the upcoming Structure Deck: Pendulum Domination in January; and the rise of Frog and Frog Paleozoic decks in Japanese metagames.

It was a pretty cut-and-dried week as far as causalities go, so let's take a look at how those five factors manifested from Monday to Friday, once we boil everything down to the bestselling cards from the 1000+ active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers in the TCGplayer marketplace.

#10: D/D/D Flame King Genghis

Despite seeing relatively little action in the new format so far, Different Dimension Demons have still been one of the hottest groups of cards in the marketplace ever since we got our first taste of their success. To recap, the first weekend of Regional Qualifiers saw David Gonzalez Top 8 with D/D's in Colorado Springs, while Pascal Manigat took a 10th Place finish in Danbury Connecticut. Jarrid Centamore finished Top 16 a week later at the Philadelphia Regional Qualifier, and on a more modest level we also saw John Duthie pilot D/D's to a 2nd Place finish at the Local Legend Duelist Series Qualifier in Aberdeen Scotland.

But that's it. For all the hype, we haven't really seen big results yet from the D/D deck. The strategy's certainly been more successful than everyone anticipated it was largely believed that D/D's wouldn't achieve anything until Pendulum Domination releases in January. Maybe that's why the relatively small successes so far have managed to spark such a blaze of enthusiasm; D/D/D Flame King Genghis has featured in nearly all of the Market Watch countdowns since its release in the 2016 Mega-Tins, and D/D's once again captured multiple Top 10 spots this week.

#9: Painful Decision

The Ultimate Duelist Series Championship and YCS Mexico City took place thousands of miles apart this past weekend, in two very different metagames. But in a format where the field is wide open and tons of different strategies have seen success, the two winning decks at those events were shockingly similar. Aaron Furman and Adrian Madriz Espinoza both won their respective Championships with variants of Majespecter Metalfoes, fine-tuned to beat Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Burning Phantom Knights with one key tech card: Jowgen the Spiritualist.

It's a wildly specific strategy, and it's shocking that it would achieve such similar successes in two vastly different tournaments.

While there were some substantial differences between the two builds, both duelists played Painful Decision: Espinoza played two copies to match his slightly slimmer Metalfoes lineup, while Furman played a full playset of three. Both used them to search Metalfoes and get a high-Scale or low-Scale Pendulum Monster on demand, thinning their deck by three cards per copy drawn, and adding redundancy to bolster the task of building their biggest plays.

With the Mega-Tin reprint making Painful Decision available for less than five bucks, and Majespecter Metalfoes suddenly a top contender, expect to see more of it in your tournaments in the near future.

#8: Barrier Statue of the Torrent

Frog and Frog Paleozoic decks have been winning tournaments in Japan for weeks now, and both have started to run Barrier Statue of the Torrent to boost the strategies' control over the field. Both decks key off of Treatoad, and both involved themes Frogs and Paleozoics are essentially pure Water.

While TCG players are running Jowgen the Spiritualist to beat Blue-Eyes White Dragon and other big Special Summoning strategies, Barrier Statue of the Torrent is allowing a similar approach overseas, and that drove it straight into the Top 10 this week. If you want to see some examples of how OCG players are using it, hop on over to the latest OCG deck list recap at The Organization to see it in action.

Remember, Barrier Statue of the Torrent was NEVER reprinted after its debut in the wildly unpopular Cyberdark Impact set, so it's no surprise that Torrent's riding an upward Price Trend and currently available at just under a buck, despite its average Market Price of about 50 cents. It could easily be worth a couple bucks by the time Invasion: Vengeance arrives on November 4th.

#7: Aether, the Evil Empowering Dragon

Getting back to Aaron Furman's Majespecter Metalfoes, Furman teched one copy of Aether, the Evil Empowering Dragon, adding searchable removal to the strategy in the best way possible raw banishing power. And while Furman's use of the card was certainly the flashiest and most noted example, we also saw Noah Bsiso Top 8 with three copies mained in his Pendulum Magician build from the Regional Qualifier in Georgia two weeks ago, while Esala Wathuthantrige Top 8'd in San Jose, siding two copies in Majespecter Performapal Odd-Eyes.

Easy to Pendulum Summon at Level 6, packing a solid 2300 ATK body, and banishing any monster regardless of its battle position, Aether, the Evil Empowering Dragon is an obviously powerful card for any Pendulum deck with a Scale of 7 or higher. It's also wildly accessible, since its printing in the 2016 Mega-Tins has made it an affordable card to snag on the secondary market, even for players not buying Tins themselves.

#6: D/D Savant Thomas

Previously going as high as the Number 1 best-selling spot in prior Market Watches, D/D Savant Thomas unites with D/D/D Flame King Genghis to make the Different Dimension Demon deck the competitor it's now become. After weeks of strong demand it's now on an upward price trend, breaking through the one dollar barrier in its average Market Price and current available price. It's still in ready supply, but the stock isn't nearly as deep now as it once was, and continued demand could clean it out long in advance of January's Pendulum Domination.

Could Savant Thomas be the next Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju price-wise? Time will tell. For now it seems as if a ton of players are banking on the idea that it very well might.

#5: Majespecter Raccoon - Bunbuku

Majespecters were everywhere in the latest Regional weekend, and Majespecter Raccoon Bunbuku was a three-of for both Aaron Furman and Adrian Madriz Espinoza's Championship-winning decks, searching Majespecter Unicorn Kirin. As Majespecters get more important, Majespecter Raccoon Bunbuku just follows suit; the absolute backbone of any deck built around or even just splashing Majespecters.

Majespecters are clearly here to stay at least for the moment, and that's going to continue to drive demand for Bunbuku. While the Dimension of Chaos original version is on an obvious downtrend from its once-lofty $25 mark, the Mega-Tin reprint is actually on an uptrend, with a current Market Price of $6.70 and climbing. The card's value is clearly Rebounding a bit across the board, as Majespecters continue to see more and more play in serious competition.

#4: Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit

The destructive hand trap has been big ever since we first saw the new Advanced Format, bolstered by a wildly accessible reprint in the 2016 Mega-Tins. Now, with Majespecters and Metalfoes seeing rising success and mixed Pendulum decks following suit, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit's never been more powerful. It's no wonder that it's once again a Top 5 finisher in sheer sales numbers, with the new reprint on a rising price trend in the wake of the weekend.

#3: Number 45: Crumble Logos the Prophet of Demolition

While Barrier Statue of the Torrents is becoming a big pick for Frog Paleozoics in the OCG, Number 45: Crumble Logos the Prophet of Demolition seems to be a near-staple for pure Frog decks. A troubleshooting problem solver that's sort of like a Rank 2 version of Number 106: Giant Hand, it's going to be a must-run for most Frog duelists come November, and that shot it all the way to the Number 3 spot virtually out of nowhere.

Crumble Logos is currently on a downward Price Trend with a Market Price of 75 cents, but with the expected upside potential on Dragons of Legend series cards, it seems like that only made it a bigger opportunity in the eyes of many.

#2: Silver Gadget

And finally, the impending release of Structure Deck: Seto Kaiba one month from now exploded demand for Silver Gadget and Gold Gadget, two must-have cards for the upcoming ABC-Dragon Buster deck that's currently smashing tournaments in Japan.

We saw the Gadgets take Number 9 and Number 7 positions in the Top 10 on Monday, but the news of an imminent reprint in the upcoming Dark Side of Dimensions Movie Pack: Gold Edition seems to have only created greater demand, making it clear that these cards won't see reprints until January of next year.

#1: Gold Gadget

That means aspiring ABC-Dragon Buster duelists won't see a reissue of Silver Gadget and Gold Gadget for longer than two months past the release of the Seto Kaiba Structure, so if you want to play ABC-Dragon Buster you need to get your Gadgets ASAP.

The Market Prices of both cards seem to have leveled off for now, with Gold Gadget riding an even Price Trend and Silver Gadget on a slightly rising incline, but both cards share the same scarcity as Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon, which has maintained a $10 Market Price since it was released. It's no big leap to think Silver Gadget and Gold Gadget are destined for the same double-digit territory, as ABC's seem to be doing just as well if not better than Blue-Eyes White Dragon decks in most Japanese metagames.

What else was big this week? Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow and Metalfoes Combination were both big after those strong showings from Metalfoes, while Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer saw solid demand off the big results from mixed Pendulum decks, and Cyber Angel Benten continued to be a marketplace favorite. All four cards have starred in previous Top 10 roles and each nearly made the Top 10 this week.

Beyond that we saw huge niche interest in Paleozoic Anomalocaris, Breakthrough Skill, Legacy of Yata-Garasu, and Kuribandit, while Number 24: Dragulas the Vampiric Dragon held onto some of the interest we saw in it over the weekend.

That's it for this week, but join us again on Monday when we'll see how these trends settled over the weekend! See you then.
