Market Watch: D/D/D’s and Juunishishi

Different Dimension Demons retained their status as trend-setters in the TCGplayer marketplace this week, but a big set of announcements from the OCG version of the game in Asia made big waves, setting the pace for half of our Top 10 countdown for the week, and rocketing an unexpected victor into the Number 1 spot, giving us a surprising new bestseller for the last four days.

While Frogs, D/D/D's, ABC-Dragon Buster and existing competitive trends in the TCG all had their say, it was the new Juunishishi theme – AKA the “Twelve Beasts” or “Zodiac Beasts” – that really shaped the action. Before we lay into the actual Top 10, let's talk about Juunishishi in brief to get you up to speed.

The Juunishishi are a Beast-Warrior theme that revolve around Xyz Summons, but the twist is that you make those Xyz in ways we've never really seen before. While each Juunishishi Xyz Monster can be Xyz Summoned by overlaying two or more Level 4's, you can also use a single Juunishishi monster as Xyz Material instead. That means you can float one Xyz Juunishishi into the next again and again, or just use a normal Level 4 Effect Monster Juunishishi on its own, upgrading it straight into an Xyz Monster without consolidating multiple cards.

The catch is that each of the Juunishishi Xyz have ATK and DEF equal to the combined totals of their Xyz Materials, and each of the Xyz have ? ATK and ? DEF – they don't contribute. That creates a situation where the strength of your offence is still invested in the number of “real” Xyz Materials you use. But there are four Juunishishi Xyz Monsters, and each of the regular Effect Monsters in the theme give effects to their Xyz when they become Materials. Those abilities all work together to make big combos that can turn one card into a swarm of monsters, and they all have regular on-field effects too; Each one manipulates cards in some way; two of them give immediate card advantage, and the rest create beneficial trades.

The result is a strategy that can kick things off with nothing but Speedroid Terrortop played into M-X-Saber Invoker, and make crazy combos like the following:

-Special Summon Speedroid Terrortop to search Speedroid Taketomborg.

-Special Summon Taketomborg and overlay for M-X-Saber Invoker.

-Special Summon Juunishishi Molmorat with Invoker's effect.

-Use Molmorat as Xyz Material for Juunishishi Wildbow.

-Detach Juunishishi Molmorat from Wildbow for Molmorat's effect, Special Summoning another Molmorat from your deck.

-Use Juunishishi Wildbow as Xyz Material for Junishishi Tigress.

-Use Tigress' effect to detach Wildbow and attach Juunishishi Molmorat to Tigress from your graveyard.

-Detach that Molmorat to Special Summon another from your deck.

From there you'll control Tigress, M-X-Saber Invoker, and two Molmorats, and the world's basically your oyster. You can use Juunishishi Tigress as Xyz Material for Juunishishi Bullhorn, then detach an Xyz Material from it to search a Beast-Warrior from your deck. Grab another Junishishi to keep building your plays in different Rank 4 directions, or explore some bigger moves we'll talk about later.

Regardless of how you choose to end that combo, you'll generally finish Turn 1 with at least six but often as many as nine cards, spread across three or four Xyz Monsters and multiple backrows. Then you'll wipe your opponent out next turn. If you're forced to go second you can make more aggressive plays and frequently just go for game then and there.

Now that you know the basics of that new theme and can see how powerful it is, let's head right into the Top 10 and examine the fallout. First up a digression, as Frogs scored one more bit of recognition after a big run the past two weeks.

#10: Paleozoic Anomalocaris

Paleozoics hit the Japanese OCG in Extra Pack 2016 and the remaining Paleozoics we don't have yet in the TCG are highly suspected to arrive in our Invasion: Vengeance release. All the Paleozoic trap cards become Level 2 Aquas when Special Summoned, which means they're awesome for Xyz Summoned Treatoad, and combined with their own on-theme Xyz like Paleozoic Anomalocaris, the deck's a control-oriented powerhouse that opens big and finishes games in an instant.

The Treatoad hype has been huge ever since the card was revealed, and while Frogs and Frog Paleozoics aren't dominating the OCG quite yet, they are winning tournaments, and both decks get more attention with each passing week. That's kept anticipation high, and with Invasion: Vengeance just over a month away, demand for Paleozoics remains strong. It's a really affordable card to stock up on if you want to do a bit of speculating, and if Frogs become ubiquitous with Invasion: Vengeance it's an investment that could easily pay off.

#9: D/D/D Flame King Genghis

We've still yet to see big Regional results from D/D/D's, but last week's OTS first place showing in Minnesota, combined with Chris LeBlanc's discussion of the strategy, kept interest in the theme and D/D/D Flame King Genghis in the Top 10.

#8: Fire Formation - Tensu

And heeeeeeere come the Juunishishis!

The combo we discussed earlier, where Speedroid Terrortop becomes an M-X-Saber Invoker and then two more Xyz Monsters, can also work in a lot of iterations without Terrortop. In that case you just have to find a copy of Juunishishi Molmorat, use your Normal Summon to get it into play, and from there launch into the Juunishishi Wildbow into Juunishishi Tigress sequence. The difference? Well, you don't get to M-X-Saber Invoker something next turn, but more importantly you consume your Normal Summon then and there, which means you can't use it later to extend your combo.

…Unless you have Fire Formation – Tensu, and thus another Normal Summon. Tensu's searchable with Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King and functions as a combo extender to make your already-insane plays that much more ludicrous. (Tiger King didn't make the Top 10, but the Ultimate Rare did spike in price as a result of the Juunishishi hype.) That was enough to put Fire Formation – Tensu in the Number 8 spot for the week.

#7: Puppet Master

Back on the Chris LeBlanc side of things, the build he proposed in that video above ran Puppet Master as a combo extender, doing things like reusing D/D/D Oblivion King Abyss Ragnarok, or maxing out the potential of your graveyard after you load it up with a Fusion Summon from your hand.

It's a concept we haven't seen much of in real competition, but it got Puppet Master into the Top 10 over the weekend, and it's been on an upward Price Trend with a rising average Market Price all week. Keep an eye on this one, because stock is getting kind of low in the TCGplayer marketplace.

#6: Flying "C"

Flying "C" has been a huge Side Deck pick this format with Burning Abyss and Phantom Knight variants both seeing huge use. The advent of Juunishishi's may have had something to do with the card's sudden surge in sales as well, since it's easily the most terrifying Xyz theme we've seen since Wind-Ups.

There are strong reasons both now and in the future to pick up this card; it's really a must-own for anyone playing competitively this format. Flying "C" saw even more use at YCS Mexico City than it did in the first two weeks of Regionals, and that's likely to carry through to YCS Minneapolis two weeks from today.

#5: Xyz Gift

Juunishishi have a ton of tricks for making Xyz, often with plenty of Xyz Materials gathered virtually for free, so Xyz Gift could easily become that theme's Destiny Drew or even Pot of Greed.

Printed only once in Photon Shockwave, Xyz Gift hasn't price spiked yet but it is approaching a possible sellout and it's already on an upward Price Trend. This is a cheap buy right now at about a buck, and someone could easily scoop the remaining copies after the way the card moved this week.

#4: Fire Formation - Tenki

The Juunishishi deck's wildly consistent because you can search all your key on-theme monsters with Fire Formation – Tenki and the new Continuous Spell Juunishishi no Kaikyoku. If you have both, they actually work together to make for even more efficient searching and deck thinning; on its own you can play Kaikyoku to destroy itself and Special Summon a Juunishishi from your deck, but if you can Tenki first, search that way for a free plus, and then pop Tenki with Kaikyoku, you open up an even greater range of options moving forward.

Even if you can't open with Speedroid Terrortop, you'll put together huge plays in the meantime and thin towards everything else you want to see, because you search so many cards in the process. While the versions of Fire Formation – Tenki from Crossroads of Chaos, Premium Gold, and the Fire Fists Special Edition are still in ample supply, the Astral Pack 3 Ultimate Rare more than doubled in price, and now sits at a hefty forty to fifty dollars.

#3: D/D/D Duo-Dawn King Kali Yuga

I'm not entirely sure why D/D/D Duo-Dawn King Kali Yuga saw so much enthusiasm this week, but it might have to do with the rising popularity of Xyz Universe. Kali Yuga's always been a favored match with Xyz Universe when you're clearing out Rank 4-ish monsters, and while it saw some play in recent tournaments for that purpose, Juunishishis may have made that an even bigger imperative.

That said, it's a staple in Different Dimension Demons as well and it's been hovering in the background just out of the Top 10 for a while. A lot of smaller pushes may have set the trend here, but a spike to Number 3 is surprising. Shout it out in the comments if there's an X factor I'm missing here.

#2: Magnet Reverse

New card text: “Target your ABC-Dragon Buster in your graveyard; Special Summon it.”

With Structure Deck: Seto Kaiba just a few weeks off, the introduction of ABC-Dragon Buster could be driving a lot of the newfound demand for Magnet Reverse. At the same time, the majority of the set list for Booster SP: Fusion Enforcers is still unknown, and there's certainly some hope that's been expressed for new Gem-Knight material in that set. Is there some expectation that we'll see Delta the Magnet Warrior sometime soon? Crystrons? Ancient…Gears…? Again, this one seems a bit tough to pin down.

#1: Coach King Giantrainer

And finally, the big winner of the week was none other than Coach King Giantrainer! Only printed as a Secret Rare in Number Hunters and never reprinted since, it saw a massive price spike from less than a dollar to over fifteen bucks at the time of this writing – an obvious buy for speculators in the wake of the big Juunishishi reveals.

Remember that play sequence we showed you earlier? When you get to the part where you control M-X-Saber Invoker, Juunishishi Tigress, and two Juunishishi Molmorat's, you can use Tigress as Xyz Material for Juunishishi Bullhorn and detach to search a Beast-Warrior from your deck. That's not just limited to Juunishishis. You can grab Coach Captain Bearman instead. Since you didn't use your Normal Summon to start the combo, you can throw it down, make your Molmorat's Level 8 with Bearman's effect, and then overlay into Coach King Giantrainer.

Doing so will let you Coach King effect right then and there for three draws. You won't get the Molmorat Special Summons, and Coach King can't attack the turn you use its ability, but it's a ton of draw power and you put a 2800 ATK body on layaway for next turn.

While it's unclear where or not Juunishishis will deliver on their massive perceived threat – they rely on sheer card advantage for their control element, and don't yet seem to have a powerful monster-based control engine – Coach King Giantrainer's the center of the Juunishishi hype machine at present. That made it the clear winner of the week.

Beyond that we didn't see many big trends in the marketplace. Metalfoes remained very popular just outside of the Top 10, with Metalfoes Adamante and Metalfoes Fusion seeing particularly high sales out of the group. We saw niche interest in Block Dragon, Mirror of the Ice Barrier, and Coach Captain Bearman too, as well as some action on D/D/D Gust King Alexander and Cattle Call, but not much else.

Join us again Monday, where we'll see if the crush of enthusiasm for Juunishishis survives the weekend, and the first fallout from the new round of Regional Qualifiers!
