Market Watch: YCS Minneapolis Fallout

Welcome back! After a brief hiatus over the weekend of YCS Minneapolis, we've returned with another Market Watch, fresh off the YCS and right smack dab in the middle of the continued impact of Legendary Decks II.

There were a ton of factors that created pushes and pulls in the secondary market this week: YCS action and Regional Qualifier results both had their say, as did reveals of new World Premiere cards from Invasion: Vengeance, and today's release of Structure Deck: Seto Kaiba. Buying patterns last week were all over the place as speculators placed their bets in the run-up to YCS Minneapolis, but the numbers smoothed out once the weekend was over.

Now we present to you, the Top 10 bestselling cards from over a thousand active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers in the TCGplayer marketplace, from Monday morning to today.

Let's get to it!

#10: Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon

The Top 32 of YCS Minneapolis saw ten different decks make the playoff rounds. No single strategy was overwhelmingly favored, and though the tournament came down to a Metalfoes mirror match in the Finals, it was still Blue-Eyes White Dragon that took the most seats in the Top Cut. The revamped Kaiba classic took eight duelists to the Top 32, making it the most successful strategy in the Swiss rounds.

Tremendous reprints from the 2016 Mega-Tins and Legendary Decks II made Blue-Eyes decks much easier to build over the past few weeks, and Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon is one of the few big cards that hasn't been reprinted yet, as we await the Movie Pack Gold Edition reprint in January. As more players flock to the deck Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon's seen continual demand, enough to keep it in the Top 10 this week.

#9: Shiranui Spectralsword

After several strong Regional showings two weeks ago, Shiranui Zombie variants continued to rack up Top 8's with Joshua Edwin's top in Lubbock Texas.

There are several different decks that look to play multiple copies of PSY-Framelord Omega on Turn 1, ravaging the opponent's hand often recycling Rise to Full Height to fend off attacks turn after turn after turn. Shiranui Zombies has fast become one of the most popular, if not THE most popular, and that drove Shiranui Spectralsword into the Number 9 position this week, despite the lack of YCS Top Cut finishes.

#8: Silver Gadget

With Structure Deck: Seto Kaiba bringing ABC-Dragon Buster into competition today, and the Movie Pack Gold Edition not arriving until January, Silver Gadget and Gold Gadget are both on rising Price Trends. Both cards have never been pricier than they are right now, with Silver Gadget's slightly lower price point making it a bit more attractive to speculators right now.

Both cards could easily achieve that $10+ price point we've seen Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon at since its release, and with Alternative now pushing twelve bucks expect to see even more action on the new Gadgets. The only surprise here is that they didn't both make the Top 10.

#7: The White Stone of Ancients

Missing from recent Market Watches despite its wildly accessible reprinting in Legendary Decks II, buyers finally came around and started snapping up cheap copies of The White Stone of Ancients in droves. A must-run three-of in all Blue-Eyes White Dragon builds, the lag time here was a surprise and the market correction makes a ton of sense.

#6: Ties of the Brethren

Big duelists like Aaron Furman and Pete Navarro topped YCS Minneapolis with conventional builds of Majespecters, but for others like Jon Lowery, Ties of the Brethren is clearly the wave of the future. We've seen Brethren Majespecters take a number of Regional Top 8's in the two weekends since its release, offering explosive +5 plays on Turn 1 and a sheer power level that's difficult to ignore.

Meanwhile Ties can be played in decks like Rock Stun, Blackwings, and even some of my favorite obscure strategies like Noble Knights. There's a ton of potential here, and despite the eyebrow-raising price tag, it was a big pick for buyers the past four days.

Will Ties of the Brethren hold its value? That might depend on how fast supply of Legendary Decks II dries up. At this point it makes sense for retailers to just crack all their product and sell singles, which could keep card values for the set pretty high over the coming weeks. We'll have to wait and find out.

#5: Magnet Reverse

Magnet Reverse has popped on and off the Top 10 list the past few weeks, ostensibly in anticipation of ABC-Dragon Buster. But Magnet Reverse has barely seen play in ABC's in the OCG, suggesting something else is going on. This one's still a bit of a head-scratcher. If you're one of the folks that picked up Magnet Reverse this week, do me a favor and post why down in the comments.

Together, we can solve this mystery.

#4: Mirror Force

Good ol' regular Mirror Force saw some big success in premier events the past two weekends, in part due to the rising popularity and Top 8 showings from Anti-Meta decks that can capitalize on big removal, often comboing it with banishing cards like Macro Cosmos and Banisher of the Radiance.

Benny Manns' Barrier Statue Anti-Meta build was one of the first decks to bring renewed attention to the anti-meta concept, and he ran triple Mirror Force alongside those types of banishing cards. It may have been one of the factors here, alongside fandom and a softening of anti-destruction effects.

#3: The Hidden City

I had the pleasure of writing on the new Subterror cards from Invasion: Vengeance for the official Konami Strategy Site, and the reveal of Subterror Behemoth Ultramafus, Subterror Behemoth Stygokraken, Subterror Nemesis Archer, and Subterror Behemoth Burrowing seem to have left an impression, catapulting the Subterror Field Spell The Hidden City straight into Number 3 for the week.

No questions here: the new Subterror cards sparked more interest in the theme, and The Hidden City is a clear staple for anyone who wants to run it. New cards for World Premiere themes always spike related Secret Rares, and this was no exception.

#2: Lunalight Leo Dancer

While Lunalights may be short on direct support, hope springs eternal for the impending release of Lunalight Crimson Fox, and the deck may benefit from Starving Venom Fusion Dragon in Invasion: Vengeance, as well as the newly-announced SHONE JUMP promo card, Odd-Eyes Persona Dragon. Meanwhile, Lunalight players have seen potential in the Zodiac Beast Xyz Monsters as well as Zodiac Beast Marmorat, all contributing factors that helped move huge numbers of the currently-cheap Lunalight Leo Dancer this week.

#1: Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon

Surprisingly, the highest-selling card of the week was this card: Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon. Recently reprinted in Legendary Decks II, its sudden popularity may be the result of several combined forces: D/D/D's continue to build steam on the way to Pendulum Domination in January; Mermails are slowly becoming more and more of a factor, as they continue to top events; and for a lot of casual and less competitive players, the reprint of Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon's simply a great chance to pick up a cool card tied to one of the oldest themes in Yu-Gi-Oh.

Red-Eyes Flare is effectively a must-own card, as anything that plays Rank 7's will probably want to run it. Now that it's less than a buck, down from its double-digit price around the Clash of Rebellions release, it's a great chance to grab a copy if you still need it.

Other big standouts that didn't quite make the Top 10? Trade-In saw pretty big sales off continued Blue-Eyes White Dragon success, and Shiranui Shogunsaga rode the same wave as Shiranui Spectralsword. We also saw big niche interest in Fire Formation Tenki, in advance of the Zodiac Beasts; Cattle Call, likely a favorable get on account of Lunalights; and Frightfur Tiger, as Fluffals remain lowkey hyped thanks to Frightfur Kraken.

That's it for this week, but check back on Monday, when we'll take a look at another Top 10!
