Market Watch: Blue-Eyes, Infernoids, Rituals, and Red-Eyes

YCS Liverpool is in the books, ABC-Dragon Buster took 14 of the Top 32 slots, and we are back with another installment of Market Watch!

For the uninitiated, a quick primer: twice a week we look at sales numbers from over 1000 active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers in the TCGplayer marketplace and count down the Top 10 bestselling cards the past four days. Rarity and price don't matter; we're looking at sheer sales volume in number of cards sold, so that means when hundreds or thousands of duelists all buy playsets of commons and rares for one strategy, we see it and can use it that info to predict the popularity of that deck.

Combined with trends influenced by upcoming releases or product news from the OCG, we can get a glimpse into the distant and not-so-distant future of the game.

Last week we saw tremendous sales from everything ABC, with ABC-Dragon Buster, Union Hangar, and all three component monsters making the Top 10. We also saw big interest in Ties of the Brethren, Infernoids, Red-Eyes, and Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and while the market cooled considerably on ABC-Dragon Buster, those other trends continued over the weekend, and a couple more cards joined the mix.

Here's how it all shook out.

#10: Barrier Statue of the Inferno

Barrier Statues have been big the past month for a few different reasons: the all-Wind Majespecters have started maining Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds to fend off ABC-Dragon Buster – and everything else – while a series of Anti-Meta decks topped a few weeks ago and rekindled interest in that approach. We've even seen Barrier Statue of the Torrents in Mermails.

While Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds and Torrents would do little to counter the decks they're already being played in, and the Light and Dark Barrier Statues would be even weaker in current competition, Barrier Statue of the Inferno and Barrier Statue of the Drought are both powerful additions to Anti-Meta strategies. With Inferno outpacing all the other Barrier Statues this weekend, it looks like we may see some continuation of the Anti-Meta trend.

#9: Ties of the Brethren

Down from Number 5 on Friday, Ties of the Brethren is still a huge pick, and while it's now on a slight downward Price Trend overall, it remains above $8 in average Market Price. Players have looked to run it in all sorts of strategies, and we've featured everything from Bujins and Ninjas to Rock Stun so far here on TCGplayer. But as far as tournaments are concerned Ties just keeps gaining momentum in Majespecters.

Turning any Level 4 Majespecter into two more plus a total of three searches, Ties of the Brethren is the basis for an explosive +5 combo on Turn 1 that loads you up with free cards and at least two defensive sets. Majespecters were once plagued by a shaky early game, and while we're still seeing some players topping without it, Ties of the Brethren really patches up that gap in the game plan.

#8: ABC-Dragon Buster

Previously at Number 3 last week, ABC-Dragon Buster and the cards related to it saw far fewer sales this weekend. That's likely because most of the people interested in playing the deck already picked up everything last week, while the deck's failure to win YCS Liverpool meant there was no Sunday rally here in North America. (Which there might've been, had the deck won and not just occupied nearly half of the Top 32.)

#7: The Seal of Orichalcos

A big pick for those Anti-Meta decks we mentioned earlier, The Seal of Orichalcos is a great choice if you don't plan to Special Summon from your Extra Deck. It can even make some cute locks with double Barrier Statues.

It's been a long time since we've seen The Seal topping sales, but we saw it played in several of those Stun-style Anti-Meta builds from a couple weeks ago, so it's not a huge surprise. It may just indicate more interest in those decks.

#6: The Black Stone of Legend

Up from Number 10 last week, The Black Stone of Legend keeps gaining steam as we get closer to Invasion: Vengeance and the release of new Red-Eyes support like Meteor Dragon Red-Eyes Impact and Red-Eyes Insight.

Formerly a $45+ Secret Rare, Black Stone is now about $3.50 in its Legendary Decks II printing, and the fan-favorite status of Red-Eyes monsters coupled with some legitimately solid support is ramping up interest.

#5: Pre-Preparation of Rites

More Cyber Angels and the new Espirit theme are headed our way over the next two sets. That's rekindled interest in Rituals across the board, in part responsible for the spike of demand for Pre-Preparation of Rites. Combined with Joe Hills' Top 32 success with Star Seraph Rituals at YCS Liverpool, the result was an upward Price Trend for Pre-Prep and… well, it's still just a buck-fifty anyways.

For anyone who's a long-term Market Watch reader, you'll probably appreciate the humor there. For months, Pre-Prep was the single biggest seller from Shining Victories, but it cold never get over the $1.50 hump in that run. It's a familiar situation for what remains one of the most promising cards of 2016.

#4: Infernoid Patrulea

Infernoids continue to be a rogue success in Regionals here in the TCG, but they're doing even better in Asian territories. The release of The Grass Is Always Tastier On The Other Side, also known as Lawnmowing Next Door, has brought Infernoids back into vogue with a stellar effect that loads cards to the graveyard in unprecedented numbers.

Infernoid players are running 60-card decks with three copies of Lawnmower and triple Left Arm Offering to search it out. From there they mill through 20+ cards and load up their graveyard for a ton of free Infernoid Summons. You can see some examples of recent OCG decks that have topped local tournaments in the OCG over at The Organization, and those big tournament results drove Infernoid Onuncu into the Top 10 last week, adding Infernoid Patrulea to the mix over the weekend.

#3: Infernoid Onuncu

Up from Number 4, Infernoid Onuncu saw both a stronger sales position over the weekend, and a wider range of appeal; it went from a niche pick-up for players and collectors in the know, to being a more widely sought card. While the Secret Rare printings can both be had for less than a dollar, those cards are on rising Price Trends. Meanwhile the Ultimate Rare's gone nuts, currently selling out in the TCGplayer marketplace and bouncing between $10 to $15.

Keep an eye on this one the next few days; its future is still a bit unclear.

#2: Ancient Rules

Billy Brake released a video on Friday where he discussed his current build of Blue-Eyes White Dragon. He ran two copies of Ancient Rules to help make use of otherwise dead cards, and making instant Rank 8's with The Melody of Awakening Dragon.

We've seen star duelists make similar impacts on the secondary market before – the most recent was Chris LeBlanc spiking Puppet Master a month or two ago – and it looks as if Brake's influence drove Ancient Rules straight into the Number 2 position.

#1: The White Stone of Ancients

Was Brake's video also responsible for sending The White Stone of Ancients back into the Number 1 spot? It's tough to tell. Blue-Eyes White Dragon got roflstomped at YCS Liverpool, scoring just one spot in the Top 32, and yet one of its key cards is suddenly outselling ABC-Dragon Buster and co.

Fan-favorite status combined with the new low price point thanks to its Legendary Decks II reprint were likely factors as well, but it's possible that Brake's simply a one-man trend-army pushing Blue-Eyes White Dragon back into the spotlight.

What else was big this weekend? Dragon Spirit of White dropped from Number 1 on Friday to Number 12, with The White Stone of Ancients taking its spot. Aside from that, the most notable trend was a sudden uptick of interest in Cubics: Geira Guile the Cubic King, Crimson Nova the Dark Cubic Lord, Cubic Mandala, Cubic Wave, and Dark Garnex the Cubic Beast all made the Top 25 this week, and most of them saw widespread purchasing that suggests real player interest.

That's it for today, but join us again Friday to see the impact of YCS Liverpool and the weekend's Regional Qualifiers, as well as the first showings from Invasion: Vengeance!
