What happened this week in the TCGplayer marketplace? Let's find out!

This is Market Watch, where we count down the Top 10 bestselling singles from over a thousand active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers, all vying for your dueling dollars. If this is your first Market Watch the standard explanation applies: we're presenting the bestselling cards from Monday to Friday based entirely on sales volume – actual copies sold – not by price or net revenue, and regardless of rarity.

That's cool because sales of cards that are lower rarity, or in higher supply, are often invisible to the public eye. But if you can see what commons and rares people are buying, you can often tell what they're going to be playing a week or two from now.

We'll also highlight any instances where upcoming releases in the TCG or Asia's OCG create spikes in demand, and with all those factors taken together we can derive some pretty cool information. The kind of information that's actionable both on the tournament table, and the trading floor.

So let's get to it! Here's the Top 10 biggest movers and shakers of the week.

#10: Frightfur Sabre-Tooth

Frightfur Tiger almost made the Top 10 last weekend thanks to news of the upcoming Frightfur Patchwork. Now, combined with weeks-long hype for Frightfur Kraken, the TCG market's taken notice with Frightfur Saber-Tooth landing at Number 10 for the week.

#9: Metalfoes Volflame

It was a huge week for Metalfoes, occupying two of the Top 4 seats at YCS Rio De Janeiro and scoring countless Regional Top 8's to go neck-and-neck with ABC-Dragon Buster. Metalfoes scored three of the Top 10 spots over the weekend, and secured four Top 10 spots this week as Metalfoes Volflame returned to a bestselling position.

With the three-of Rare once again in the Top 10, it's a clear indicator that more players are adopting Metalfoes as their tournament deck of choice.

#8: Raremetalfoes Bismugear

A three-of for most Metalfoes players, Raremetalfoes Bismugear's been a staple of our Market Watches since its release. Adding a new level of consistency and raw card economy to the Metalfoes deck, it's become another fundamental pillar of the strategy. Demand remains strong as more players take to the deck.

#7: Fullmetalfoes Fusion

Lots of Metalfoes players are shifting to a more flexible two copies of Fullmetalfoes Fusion after playing just one to start, and better maneuverability in the mirror match is just one of the benefits. That mirror match is becoming an increasing priority as Metalfoes keep gaining playershare in tournaments, and that makes the transition to double Fullmetalfoes Fusion that much more important.

In any mirror match, superior ability to interact with your opponent and longer reach offering bigger turns and more damage, are the stuff wins are made of. So it's no surprise that Fullmetalfoes Fusion continues to be a hot seller given Metalfoes' position in the competitive landscape.

#6: Gagaga Samurai

Gagaga Samurai's put in several Top 8 showings the past few weeks, both in ABC-Dragon Buster and occasionally in Awesome Hero variants. When your opponent controls a monster and you want to use a Rank 4 to push a bunch of damage over it, Number S39: Utopia the Lightning's your man. But when their field's clear? Gagaga Samurai steps in to threaten up to 3800 damage unassisted, and that's made it a notable fringe pick.

Again, like Fullmetalfoes Fusion some of that comes down to mirror match maneuverability. When you're looking to beat a strategy that's very similar to your own, any extra ways to make game can mean the difference between winning and losing.

Which isn't to say Gagaga Samurai's not good in every other match-up too. But the rising popularity of Gagaga Samurai happens to coincide with the refinement of the ABC-Dragon Buster mirror match, and I don't think that's entirely coincidence.

#5: Paleozoic Opabinia

Paleozoics are slowly gaining playershare as more and more copies of Toadally Awesome make their way into the hands of eager duelists, so it's no surprise that Paleozoic Opabinia's seeing sustained sales.

Quickly becoming a three-of from a two-of start, Opabinia's a tremendous infrastructure card and now solidly takes priority over the “win more” feel of Paleozoic Anomalocaris. Both are good, but one's clearly more important in more games.

#4: True King Agnimazud, the Vanisher

With Yang Zings taking a position of low key rogue outlier, demand has remained strong for one of last week's bigger standouts, True King Agnimazud, the Vanisher. There aren't many decks that can run Agnimazud since it's Fire-themed, but it's expected that Agnimazud and True King Bahrastos, the Fathomer could finally make Yang Zings a noteworthy tournament presence in conjunction with Denglong, First of the Yang Zing and Nina Pillars of Yang Zing.

That's a big maybe.

But that maybe's been strong enough to push the True Kings into the Top 10 a surprising number of times over the past few weeks.

#2: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

Kaijus are huge right now; the threat of Toadally Awesome's been pushing them back into Main Decks. And whenever Kaijus are seeing Main Deck play, the next logical progression is always more dedicated variants packing Interrupted Kaiju Slumber. It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out over the weekend, as the competitive landscape still seems pretty flexible beyond the obvious rising tide of ABC-Dragon Buster and Metalfoes.

#1: Pot of Acquisitiveness

And finally, the top-selling card from Invasion: Vengeance is back on top once again this week, as fed-up ABC-Dragon Buster, Burning Phantom Knight, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and Instant Fusion players continue to flock to it. Pot of Acquisitiveness is becoming more and more of a Side Deck staple at two copies, as Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries continues to be an unrelenting tournament force. With no end in sight to Winter Cherries mania, Pot of Acquisitiveness is a must-run in a wide array of the format's biggest strategies.

Note that despite deep, deep stock in the TCGplayer marketplace, Pot of Acquisitiveness is on a mildly upwards Price Trend in the TCGplayer Marketplace. And while that little blue line may not look like a dramatic swing, the card's up to an average Market Price of over $3 as of this writing. Still not a ton of cash, but twice what it was a couple weeks ago.

What else happened beyond the Top 10 this week? Once again, Crystron Citree took the Number 11 position, this time joined by Crystron Quandax at Number 13 and Crystron Phoenix at Number 15. That's way more interest than we've seen in Crystrons before, suggesting the deck might start popping up in tournaments… even if it never makes a Top 8 this Regional season. You should know what those cards do.

Meanwhile Metalfoes Goldriver and Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow clocked in at Number 12 and Number 14 respectively, demonstrating that sustained interest in Metalfoes. On the pricier side of things, Fullmetalfoes Alkahest kept on climbing, now over $14 in average Market Price and taking the Number 16 post. Paleozoics, Red-Eyes Insight, and King of the Swamp all saw notable sales as well.

That's all we've got for you for this week, but we'll be back on Monday with another delicious helping of fresh data, as well as some new perspective on the competitive landscape in the wake of this weekend's giant Regional schedule. So many tournaments!

See you then,

-Jason Grabher-Meyer
