Market Watch: Abyss Actors’ Encore

After a hiatus on Friday, we're back with a full week's worth of sales data from the TCGplayer marketplace – our very own gateway to over a thousand active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers. And with an entire week of data, we're seeing some shifting trends beneath the surface.

…Or at least beneath a massive wall of Abyss Actors, as enthusiasm for the new theme remains tremendously high.

Every Market Watch column counts down the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer marketplace, which means sheer numbers of cards sold. If a common sells more copies than a high-value Secret Rare, then the common charts higher, even if the Secret Rare is worth more. It's easy enough to look at the TCGplayer Price Guide and see which cards are worth the most in each set, as well as their individual Price Trends.

But what we offer here is different: a chance to look at data you won't find anywhere else, and information that can help you predict trends in coming competition, as well as give a window to player responses in the wake of new release news. It's pretty cool!

#10: Destiny Hero - Malicious

We've seen Allure of Darkness and Destiny HERO – Malicious trade off as top selling cards in the TCGplayer marketplace since the release of Destiny Soldiers. That made total sense in the case of Allure: it's a flexible card that offers draw power to a lot of decks on the competitive fringe, and it's an obvious must-own even when it's not being run in tournaments – it's that useful across that many strategies. With so many new and returning players coming into the game this year, the demand made sense, and continues to do so.

But Malicious didn't have all those factors going for it. While it's played in several different strategies, has synergy with new releases like Pot of Acquisitiveness, and comes packing a ton of nostalgia, it's not as useful for quite as many decks as Allure. That's probably why we finally saw Malicious tumble the past week, sliding all the way to Number 10.

#9: Abyss Actor – Evil Heel

From there, just like our last few Market Watches, we hit a wall of Abyss Actors. Last time around I mentioned that we'd already sort of run Abyss Actors into the ground, recapping the effects of each one every time it hits the Top 10. So I'll spare you that this time, save a nod to Evil Heel's status as the deck's biggest boss monster, dependent on its biggest support monster for Pendulum Summoning, Abyss Actor – Wild Hope.

#8: Abyss Actor – Leading Lady

In our last Market Watch we had a bit of an upset, as Abyss Actor – Leading Lady took center stage as the bestselling Abyss Actor card in the TCGplayer marketplace. This week it slid back down to an arguably more reasonable Number 8 position, but sales were still strong. The Lady's two cohorts saw some impressive action as well, with Abyss Actors – Extras and Abyss Actor – Funky Comedian coming in at Number 14 and Number 16.

#7: Metalfoes Silverd

Despite the massive popularity of Abyss Actors the past while, Metalfoes rallied in the last week. Metalfoes Silverd captured Number 7, while Metalfoes Steelen and Fullmetalfoes Fusion came in at Number 13 and Number 17. That spells enthusiasm for the Metalfoes deck in the wake of YCS Anaheim, so expect to see more players migrating to the strategy.

#6: Abyss Script – Rise of the Abyss King

The most important of the Abyss Actors' support cards took Number 6 last week, occupying what was the highest position of any Abyss Actors card last time around. Abyss Actors Back Stage nearly made the Top 10 at Number 12, and the fact that Abyss Actors reached higher positions on the sales charts this time suggests their momentum could remain for a while.

#5: Abyss Actor – Sassy Rookie

Abyss Actor – Sassy Rookie made the Top 10 for the first time, perhaps suggesting that more players are branching out to try different cards in the theme, or that new players are simply picking up all the cards given their accessible price point. While Sassy Rookie's good-looking in a vacuum, it doesn't see much play in OCG builds, so it hasn't made much of an impact sales-wise until now.

#4: Abyss Actor - Superstar

Up from Number 9 last Monday, Abyss Actor – Superstar searches and recycles your Abyss Scripts, and it has the second-highest natural ATK of the Abyss Actor monsters. It's an obvious three-of, and it was kind of surprising to see it de-emphasized last weekend. While it's still kind of surprising that Abyss Actors are ruling the sales charts in the first place, it makes sense that Superstar should be near the top of wherever the Abyss Actors fall in the sales hierarchy.

#3: Abyss Actor – Wild Hope

And finally, after that brief disruption from Leading Lady, Abyss Actor – Wild Hope is back on top. Recruiting an Abyss Actor from your deck to your hand whenever it's destroyed, and essentially turning any other Abyss Actor into the second half of your Pendulum Scale, Wild Hope is the biggest reason the Abyss Actor strategy can actually function in competition.

A pivotal must-run that adds precision on one side of the coin, and flexibility on the other, it rightly deserves the title of “Bestselling Abyss Actor”. The strategy just doesn't work without Wild Hope's abilities; it boosts consistency and widens your range of options, and it's even got decent ATK.

If this card is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can add 1 "Abyss Actor" card from your Deck to your hand, except "Abyss Actor - Wild Hope". #2: Trade-In

Cards that say “Draw 2” on them are often the lifeblood of competitive decks, so when they're available as cheap foil reprints they tend to do well. With Blue-Eyes White Dragon still lagging in tournaments, Trade-In's likely picking up some speed due to the advent of the Pendulum Domination Structure Deck, just a month and a half away.

Not all Different Dimension Demon decks we've seen making Top Cuts run Trade-In, but enough do that it's probably a good time to nab some foil Trade-Ins if you think you might want them come January..

#1: Allure of Darkness

That same Structure Deck could also be contributing to the sustained popularity of Allure of Darkness, once again the single bestselling card in the TCGplayer marketplace for the second week in a row. The most versatile draw spell in the game today short of Pot of Desires, Allure's been a tournament staple ever since it was introduced, and like Trade-In, its popularity is driven in part by the chance to grab foils on the cheap.

Darklords, Abyss Actors, and Dark Synchro are all hot right now in their own ways, and combined with the use of Allure in decks like Kozmos and Genex varants of Atlantean Mermails, those strategies continue to make Allure a big pick.

Blue-Eyes White Dragon rallied a bit at YCS Anaheim, as Ryan Murakami took the deck to a Top 16 finish. It's probably no coincidence that The Melody of Awakening Dragon just missed the Top 10 last week, clocking in at Number 11.

Other notable standouts? Dark Hole took the Number 15 position, a big spike in sales numbers for that card, as it gains ground as both a Main Deck and Side Deck pick over stuff like Swords of Concealing Light and Book of Eclipse. And Darklord Nurse Reficule hit Number 18, for reasons that remain unclear.

Will Abyss Actors continue leading the marketplace? Will Metalfoes gain more ground? We'll find out Friday, in our next Market Watch column.
