Market Watch: Erratas Hit The OCG

The secondary market was thrown for a loop this week when a series of new erratas were announced in the OCG version of Yu-Gi-Oh, over in Asia. The TCGplayer Marketplace felt the impact.

Brain Control, Future Fusion, Imperial Order, Goyo Guardian, Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, and Rescue Cat all got new card text largely to soften their effects, as they rotated back into the Advanced Format in the OCG. And while no such errata has been announced for our version of the game in Europe, Micronesia, and the Americas, we've seen our game follow the OCG's erratas in the past… at least after a significant waiting period. If you want to see the changes yourself, you can check out scans of the news over on The Organization.

Goyo Guardian probably won't be making an impact any time soon, but some of the cards have real potential, and while we may not see those erratas for a long time –there's no guarantee they'll ever materialize – a lot of people still picked up copies of the biggest cards.

But before we get to that…

#10: Wonder Wand

Right off the bat, Wonder Wand emerged from the depths of obscurity to sell a ton of copies, likely in part due to the slew of upcoming Spellcaster monsters arriving throughout 2017.

While there was no notable price spike amongst the card's ten different printings at lower rarities, the Ultimate Rare did sell out, now commanding double its previous Market Value for non-Mint copies alone.

#9: Abyss Script – Opening Ceremony

Abyss Actors continued to be hot in the TCGplayer marketplace, with two cards hitting the Top 10 that have never charted before. Abyss Script – Opening Ceremony was the first at Number 9, offering an effect that gains Life Points when activated and punishes your opponent for destroying it, potentially granting a +5 of card economy.

#8: Abyss Script – Fire Dragon's Lair

Fire Dragon's Lair did even better, offering a chance to strip your opponent's Extra Deck of up to four monsters with one card – potentially devastating in some specific matchups.

The high sales numbers for the Abyss Scripts seem surprising; neither card sees play in competitive Abyss Actor decks, and they're historically uncommon picks even for casual builds. This might have just been a market correction after players bought every Abyss Actor card but these the past few weeks, but even then, it's a bit of confusing turn of events. As far as I'm aware there've been no new Abyss Actor cards revealed since Twinkle Littlestar, and no tournament-topping builds running these Abyss Scripts.

Hit me up in the comments if you've got a theory.

#7: Abyss Actor – Funky Comedian

Funky Comedian's sort of surprising as well, since the card's generally played as a one-of you'd search with other effects, and isn't tremendously important; it's not part of the must-run core suite of any Abyss Actor build I've ever seen. Regardless, it put in a ton of work this week, moving almost as many cards as…

#6: Rescue Cat

My all-time favorite card is coming back in the OCG as of January 1st, with the following errata!

Current TCG Text:

You can send this face-up card to the Graveyard to Special Summon 2 Level 3 or lower Beast-Type monsters from your Deck. Those monsters are destroyed during the End Phase.

New OCG Text:

You can only use the effect of “Rescue Cat” once per turn.

You can send this card to the Graveyard; Special Summon 2 Level 3 or lower Beast-Type monsters from your Deck, but their effects are negated, also they are destroyed during the End Phase.

The changes here are significant, but the card could easily wind up seeing play. Rescue Cat's effect can now only be played once per turn, keeping it from becoming a snowballing bundle of fluff that rolls over your opponent in big combos. In addition, the monsters you Special Summon with it now hit the field with their effects negated.

There's still a lot of potential here, largely for the Extra Deck monsters Rescue Cat gets you to. Since it can pull Earth Level 3's from your deck it's a Rank 3 toolbox on fuzzy legs, similar to Tour Guide From the Underworld or Speedroid Terrortop, but you can use it to go into stuff like Naturia Beast or M-X-Saber Invoker as well.

We'll have to wait and see what that's really worth in tournament play. But for now the common and Rare printings remained steady in price, while the Turbo Pack: Booster 3 Super Rare tripled in value, up to $45 from its previous Market Price of less than $15.

#5: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

After claiming the Number 1 spot a week ago thanks to momentum in the OCG and some appearances in a handful of Top Cut decks here in our territory, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber has held onto the Top 5. Its average Market Price is returning to normal after a spike to $4, but interest in the card remains high, as Kaijus continue to place well overseas as an accompaniment to Zoodiacs.

#4: Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier

One of the most feared Synchro Monsters of all time is coming back to the OCG for 2017, looking a bit different than before.

Current TCG Text:

You can discard any number of cards to the Graveyard to target the same number of cards on the field; return those targets to the hand.

New OCG Text:

You can only use the effect of “Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier” once per turn.

You can discard to the Graveyard any number of cards, then target that many cards your opponent controls; return them to the hand.

Like Rescue Cat, part of the problem with Brionac was that its effect could be used again and again to create ridiculous combos. The flexibility of multiple activations per turn also let you mitigate risks, picking off one card or entire groups of cards in phases, as you'd work to probe your opponent and draw out responses. Now, with the effect limited to once per turn, Brionac's not as concerning.

Its viability seems pretty obvious, and all printings of Brionac nearly doubled in price over the course of the week. The only exception was the Gold Rare version, the price of which has remained largely unchanged since the announcement of the erratas. But you know what sold even better than Brionac?

#2: Destiny HERO - Dynatag

Also this. While everything else on our Top 10 countdown this week saw widespread appeal, Destiny HERO – Drilldark and Destiny HERO – Dynatag managed to see huge sales to a more narrow audience. It's unclear why Destiny HERO cards were such a big get this week, especially these two, but sometimes all it takes is a few people looking to buy mass amounts of a particular card all going in at once by sheer coincidence.

Was that the case here? Time may tell. For now it seems like an anomalous blip.

#1: Imperial Order

Far less surprising, the biggest seller of the week was none other than the original floodgate, Imperial Order. A devastatingly powerful card from the day of its original release in Pharaoh's Servant, Imperial Order's a very different card in its errata'd form, but it's very obviously a powerful card, and may still be overpowered:

Current TCG Text:

Negate all Spell Card effects on the field. During each of your Standby Phases, pay 700 Life Points or destroy this card.

New OCG Text:

You must pay 700 LP during each player's Standby Phase. If you cannot pay 700 LP, destroy this card.

While this card is in the Spell & Trap Zone, negate all Spell Effects on the field.

There are a few changes impacting this card, some direct and some inferred. As far as card text goes, the cost of Imperial Order has swerved in two ways: it's effectively doubled, since you now pay 700 LP in EACH player's Standby Phase, not just your own; and you on longer have the option to refuse to pay for it, just to get it off the field.

Both of those changes are big deals: while the higher cost might not matter so much given the card's chance to win you the game the turn after you flip it, putting yourself on that kind of clock can still be a problem in longer duels. Those longer games can occur amongst certain decks this format, and they'll definitely happen some time in the future when the pace of play changes.

At the same time, the inability to shut Imperial Order off is likely the bigger deal. The new text inevitably draws comparisons to Vanity's Emptiness, where the chance to block your opponent for a turn and then blow Emptiness off the table just by resolving a spell or trap card whenever you choose is a game-winning factor. You can't do that with the new Imperial Order; once it's flipped it's probably sticking around, even if you don't want it there anymore.

Beyond those changes, the game itself is very different from what it was years ago when Imperial Order first debuted. Cards like Diamond Dire Wolf, Dragon Spirit of White, Typhoon and several others just didn't exist back then, and while nobody likes relying on this-might-work-or-this-might-not type answers in the face of a near-win-condition level floodgate, those cards do lessen Imperial Order's impact to some degree. In addition, Pendulum Spells still establish your Pendulum Scale with Imperial Order active, so it won't stop Pendulum Summons.

But all that said, Imperial Order's still a tremendously powerful card that will obviously win tournaments. It was only printed three times in 14 years, and Near Mint copies spiked from $1.25 to more than ten bucks overnight. Sellers are listing tons of played copies as well, but it's always tough to tell what level of damage could render a card marked in the eyes of a judge, and Near Mint Imperial Orders continue to climb on a rising Price Trend.

Will we ever see these erratas stateside? Probably. But it's more a question of when than if; it might not happen for a very long time. The last round of erratas like Ring of Destruction and Sinister Serpent didn't hit here until months after they happened in the OCG. The errata to Dark Magician of Chaos took even longer.

And those were cards that were pretty unlikely to cause trouble. Imperial Order is already raising the hackles of a lot of players – understandably so – while Rescue Cat and Brionac could easily become tournament-topping forces. If the Powers That Be here in the TCG decide to take a “wait and see” approach and bide their time, it's probably a smart way to go about it.

Regardless, all the likely price spikes have already happened, and as supply dries up it's unlikely we'll see much change for those three cards in the marketplace. They're probably not going to rise much higher?, but they're almost definitely not coming down any time soon.

What do you think of the erratas. Do you want to see those changes in our version of the game, with all three of those cards off the Forbidden List and returning to Limited status? Let me know down in the comments.
