Market Watch: Looking Ahead

Welcome back, to another Monday edition of Market Watch.

Last week we saw overseas errata make a big impact on the secondary market here in the TCG. Rescue Cat and Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier exploded into the Top 10, while Imperial Order took over, rocketing to the twelve dollar mark after languishing in binders for years.

Demand for those cards plummeted this week as they transitioned from opportunistic buys to expensive post-spike purchases, but the weekend saw some interesting shifts as competitors looked ahead to new releases.

As always, our Market Watch columns count down the Top 10 cards of the last four days by sales volume, which means the only thing we talk about are pure numbers: whichever ten cards sell the most copies in those four days, those are our Top 10 picks, regardless of rarity. Sometimes that means big price spikes on popular foils. But it can also mean trending commons and rares selling in the hundreds or thousands; cards that don't show big price increases, but can hint at big shifts in tournament play.

With the 2016 competitive season now over, a lot of the bestsellers from Friday to today seem to be responses to upcoming cards. Case in point…

#10: Blue-Eyes White Dragon

The Blue-Eyes White Dragon deck is playing second fiddle to Metalfoes, Frogs, and ABC-Dragon Buster these days, but the deck's continued to Top 32 the last few YCS tournaments, and it's still topping plenty of Regionals. We saw several Blue-Eyes related cards retake positions in the Top 10 this weekend, which may have been a function of the recent fan hype for the Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions movie finally confirmed to be hitting theatres January 27th, as well as the accompanying re-release of the Movie Pack, returning as Movie Pack Gold Edition on January 13th.

#9: Abyss Actor – Leading Lady

Once again, Abyss Actor – Leading Lady held onto a Top 10 spot, claiming Number 9.

We've seen a lot of the Abyss Actor cards trading off positions week to week, but Leading Lady's been one of the most consistent sellers of the bunch. Knocked out of the Top 10 last Friday by Abyss Actor – Funky Comedian, Abyss Script – Opening Ceremony, and Abyss Script – Fire Dragon's Lair, Leading Lady's now back on top, making a lot more sense given her place in the strategy.

It's really amazing how long the Abyss Actors' popularity has lasted. Despite very few notable tournament showings, enthusiasm for the theme is still high.

#8: Abyss Script – Rise of the Abyss King

While Opening Ceremony and Fire Dragon's Lair somehow made the Top 10 last week, Abyss Script – Rise of the Abyss King emerged from the weekend as the top selling Abyss Actor card. As a staple three-of that offers huge payoffs for fielding multiple Abyss Actors, it makes a lot more sense than what we saw last week. It's a must-run in pretty much every build, and it's one of those cards that let really let you guage the current level of interest in the theme.

#7: Left Arm Offering

Looking ahead to Raging Tempest in February, the upcoming spell card The Grass Is Always Tastier On The Other Side has sparked huge tournament success for Infernoids over in the OCG. Infernoid duelists play 60-card decks running three copies of Other Side to mill massive numbers of cards, and they run three Left Arm Offering to make sure they see it reliably.

Left Arm's seen a little Top 8 experimentation here in TCG territories, but the card's really going to shine come February 10th. That said, players are already stocking up in advance, and that's kept the card above the $5 mark. If demand continues like this we could easily see it climb to the double digits.

#6: SPYRAL Master Plan

It's unclear why SPYRAL cards saw such interest this week, but SPYRAL Master Plan was just one of two different SPYRAL cards that drummed up big sales. Master Plan's popularity was especially surprising since the most successful build of the deck on record – Bryan Serio's 9th Place build that we looked at a month ago – didn't run it.

#5: Metalfoes Mithrilium

Metalfoes are one of the biggest decks-to-beat in the current format, and Metalfoes Mithrilium has become the three-of poster boy for the theme. Interest in the deck remains strong, especially coming off Billy Brake's win with Metalfoes at YCS Bochum, and thus Mithriliums were sold in bushels all weekend long.

#4: SPYRAL Resort

Bryan Serio's SPYRAL build largely skipped all the new cards from Invasion: Vengeance, except this one: the tremendous search and protection card, SPYRAL Resort. Shielding your buffed SPYRAL Super Agent from your opponent's targeted effects, Resort searches the combo pieces you need to go off, secures the investments you make, and even recycles Speedroid Taketomborg back into your deck for repeated abuse with Speedroid Terrortop.

It's an amazing card and if SPYRALs are going to do anything moving forward, you better believe three copies of SPYRAL Resort are gonna be involved. But what drove SPYRALs all the way to Number 4 over the weekend? Still a bit tricky to figure out.

#3: Bujintei Kagutsuchi

Kagutsuchi's seen some recent experimentation in TCG Lightsworn decks, where its ability to mill five cards gives it sort of a Minerva feel. But more than that, the card's emerged as a popular pick for Zoodiac Infernoid decks in the OCG, where it's made by overlaying cards like Zoodiac Marmorat and Zoodiac Thoroughblade.

Kagutsuchi was only ever printed in Shadow Specters and the 2014 Mega-Tin Mega-Pack, and while supply is now running pretty low, we're not quite at the sellout point yet for the Ultra Rare copies. However, the Ultimate Rare will currently set you back ten bucks or more, and the remaining Ultras could be gone with one strong push from a speculator. A lot of would-be Zoodiac Infernoid players were clearly covering their interests this weekend, and some speculators were probably stocking up as well.

#2: Return of the Dragon Lords

The mighty Return of the Dragon Lords was the top-selling card from Rise of the True Dragons for weeks, and it re-emerged this week making it all the way to the Number 2 spot. Is it the upcoming Dark Side of Dimensions movie, or the Movie Pack Gold Edition Rekindling hype for Blue-Eyes? Could it have something to do with anticipation for the Eidolon theme, or a fan-driven response to the holiday season as well as all the recent Blue-Eyes merch released in Japan?

It's probably all of that, as well as a mix of other factors pushing Return so high up the charts. But supply Rebounded quickly, and while Return of the Dragon Lords is still about $5 a pop, it's on a downward Price Trend. It should remain accessible over the coming weeks.

#1: Darklord Rebellion

Finally, Darklord Rebellion was a tremendous niche pick for a select group of buyers who saw this as the perfect time to stock up. It's an interesting turn of events, since Rebellion was largely played as a singleton in the few Regional-topping Darklord decks we saw right after the release of Destiny Soldiers. The deck's failed to manifest results since; its performance seems to have peaked with Steve Silverman's Top 32 finish at YCS Anaheim.

Is this a function of hype for some sort of Darklord Nurse Reficule strategy? Would that deck even play it? (Probably not.) The sudden spike in interest is odd, and it was spread across a significant number of buyers. This wasn't just one madman on a mission.

That's it for today! The weekend's sales trends demonstrated some anticipation for upcoming cards and releases, but raised about as many questions as they gave answers. Definitely a strange weekend in the TCGplayer marketplace. What do YOU think of the weekend's bestsellers?
