I'm not sure if it's an inside joke at Konami, but what's up with all the random Exodia support we've seen over the years? We haven't seen a competitive Exodia deck since, well, ever, and half the Exodia cards directly clash with the alternate win condition of Exodia the Forbidden One.

Exodia doesn't have a ton of direct references to any specific lore, historical piece, or myth, but the design and name certainly hint at a reference. I'm glad cards printed more recently correlate to tangible events. Knowledge is power!

The mysterious Mr. H from Dubai writes...

We don't have to be from a specific country, right?

My deck right now is Shaddoll Exodia - simple, right? So what I was thinking was, maybe later I can use the Invoked or Zoodiac core, or maybe remove the Exodia part to make the deck Invoked or Zoodiac Shaddolls, but I'm not so sure. Anyway, do whatever you can to make the deck better! I know not everything is available right now in the TCG…

-Mr. H ~ Dubai, UAE

It's rare for it to happen, but I actually didn't know what a card did: The Legendary Exodia Incarnate.

Not sure how I missed that one, but I didn't know that card existed.

Notes:

Whether to save digital ink or just as matter of legitimate play preference, Mr. H. tossed a ton of duplicates into his deck. How many Shaddoll Hounds are in a normal Shaddoll deck? Mr. H doesn't care and said three was the ideal number.

Obliterate!!! makes me glare angrily at my computer screen every time I look at the card, because it's downright ridiculous. It's a surprisingly useful card, even if you have to run the Forbidden One and a bunch of Exodia cards to use it. The secondary effect is a nice buffer in the end, but the first effect – a continuous Compulsory Evacuation Device – mitigates the cost of running all the bad cards you're required to play.

The Legendary Exodia Incarnate's one option to yard with Obliterate!!!, but its on-field effect is the real reason to use it. It'll only cost you an arm or a leg to field, and it has the nice ability of being “Unaffected by other cards' effects.” Only eleven cards have that text, and most of those cards require a crazy cost to make your monster immune. The Legendary Exodia Incarnate is too cool for that.

Combine it with Obliterate!!! and you'll have a giant unkillable monster with upwards of 5000 ATK, and it'll reload your continuous Compulsory Evacuation Device - why wouldn't you want to tap into that power? The only reason I can think of is if your name is Doug “I Can't Believe You Made Me Use Gishki Mollusk” Zeeff.

Obliterate!!! yards the Forbidden One monsters from your hand, but more importantly your deck as well, meaning big Exodia Incarnate can be somewhat strong from the get-go. By “somewhat strong,” I mean it can kill a Red Moon Baby. But then if your opponent's Red Moon Baby kills your monster with a Black Pendant attached, you'll draw a card!

Anyway, Shaddolls are a good pairing with the Exodia cards. They have some inadvertent synergy: Shaddoll Beast and Allure of Darkness draw cards, Armageddon Knight, Shaddoll Fusion, and Mathematician yard Dark monsters, and Shaddoll Falco opens up a bunch of Synchros in the Extra Deck. But despite all that combo potential, Mr. H elected to play cards like Shaddoll Hound and Curse of the Shadow Prison. If Shaddoll Hound's two effects were switched and El Shaddoll Construct was still legal for play, then those cards could be good choices. But they're not, so I'll immediately purge them from the deck. They're the definition of dead weight here.

I really see too many Shaddoll monsters here, and not enough cards to fill the graveyard. At first I wanted to go with Kuribandit since it can yard Exodia and trigger a bunch of effects, but blindly rolling the dice on a weak Normal Summon isn't very good here. Pick five random cards from the deck and see how great Kuribandit would be. I found if I didn't hit a Shaddoll Falco or Shaddoll Squamata, things really hurt.

With Mathematician, Armageddon Knight, and Allure of Darkness in the mix, I felt a lot more confident in this deck's opening hands, but one Earth monster wasn't enough to support El Shaddoll Shekhinaga. Nephe Shaddoll Fusion and Shaddoll Core were designed to mitigate that, but barf, no, you can't rely on those for your Earth quota either. Obviously Maxx “C” is a great Earth monster, but the ridiculously named Snow Plow Hustle Rustle actually fits really well here.

Ironically, the majority of Shaddoll Train decks you'll see don't run that card, but the Earth train can blow up an Obliterate!!! or Shaddoll Core for added bonuses, while shutting down attacks. Most attack stoppers fall short in some category - Speedroid Menko and Battle Fader are grossly attributed, Gorz, the Emissary of Darkness conflicts with the continuous traps, the ghost that lives in my basement told me not to run Swift Scarecrow, and Swords of Revealing Light is a painful reminder that El Shaddoll Construct is still Forbidden.

If You're Sad, Just Say “Snow Plow Hustle Rustle” Five Times Fast
It's hard to capitalize on the Forbidden One pieces because they're Limited Level 1 Normal Monsters that are fodder, plain and simple. You don't have much Normal Monster support that meshes well with the slow but sturdy Shaddoll deck of 2017. Revival cards like Swing of Memories and Tri-Wight don't pay off here because they're extremely narrow in their function and require follow-up plays. I thought about them, but I ended up gravitating to the one card that was more flexible: Dark Factory of Mass Production.

Swing of Memories does save your Normal Summon, but Dark Factory of Mass Production has the niche ability to give you an alternate win condition. It sounds hokey, but with Dark Factory of Mass Production, Obliterate!!!, and The Legendary Exodia Incarnate, it's not as farfetched as it seems. Even though you can't Factory back Exodia the Forbidden One, the other two cards can, and Factory turns into a wild card. Worst case scenario, you'll have more options to pitch with Obliterate!!!, more Shaddoll Fusion fodder, a tribute for The Legendary Exodia Incarnate, or just a chump Blocker.

While I'd love for Exodia's win-con to be a dominating factor, I'd rather up the deck count to fit in, well, the “useless” Normal Monsters. Incarnate, Obliterate!!!, Exodia, and Dark Factory take up a surprisingly big chunk of the deck, and I didn't want to sacrifice much-needed Shaddoll cards just to make the deck a tight 40. In truth, the most changes happened over in the Extra Deck. Take a look.

-1 The Legendary Exodia Incarnate
-3 Shaddoll Hound
-1 Shaddoll Hedgehog
-1 Shaddoll Falco
-1 Nephe Shaddoll Fusion
-3 Curse of the Shadow Prison
-1 Shaddoll Core

-1 El Shaddoll Annoyatyllis
-2 El Shaddoll Grysta
-1 El Shaddoll Wendigo
-1 Number 39: Utopia
-2 Number S39: Utopia Prime
-1 Number S39: Utopia the Lightning

+1 Mathematician
+2 Armageddon Knight
+2 Snow Plow Hustle Rustle
+2 Maxx “C”
+3 Allure of Darkness
+1 Shaddoll Fusion
+2 Instant Fusion
+1 Dark Factory of Mass Production

+1 Armades, Keeper of Boundaries
+1 Elder Entity Norden
+1 Arcanite Magician
+1 Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer
+1 Abyss Dweller
+1 Black Rose Dragon
+1 Daigusto Emeral
+1 Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max

Here's the final list – it's a bit bulky, even after slimming down a few cards I really didn't want to cut! Also noteable: I wanted a third El Shaddoll Winda to use with Instant Fusion, but that almost never came up.

Notes:

If you're not sold on the deck, then give it a shot. You'll be convinced. Go forth and infect others like parasites as they look at you strangely, wondering what in the world you're playing. Once they're hooked, well, let's just say my plan is to get someone to cosplay as Yugi at a Regional, stand up, and scream “Obliterate!!!” at their opponent.

Just remember, beat your opponents before they beat you!

Do you love winning with unconventional strategies? Do you love creating mash-ups? Does your deck need an injection of crazy? Send the following to rerouting.tcgplayer@gmail.com to have your deck featured in the “Re-Routing” deck fix column!

-Your Main and Extra Deck list. (No Side Deck needed, but please send a written deck list, not a screencap; screencapped deck lists will be filed and then burned in the furnace accordingly… and your deck should be TCG legal).

-Your name and city.

-Remember, please use full card names! Abbrevs and mis-sipllngs make Loukas' life sad. Try your darndest to get the TCG name on there.

-A paragraph or two describing your deck: what it does, why you're playing it, and its strengths and weaknesses. “Winning” is not a strategy per se, and neither is “beating your opponents before they beat you.”

-Your favorite card from the build and why – make me fall in love with the deck! The cooler your strategy the more I'll want to fix it, and if you throw in funny jokes, that'll surely get my attention too; be warned, unfunny jokes will push your deck to the back of the stack. Don't be afraid to get creative! New stuff takes priority, because I'm not bored of it yet! –LJP
