Welcome to the first Market Watch of the new year!

If you're starting off YOUR 2017 by joining us for the first time, here's the skinny. Every Monday and Friday we look at the past four days of sales in the TCGplayer Marketplace, highlighting the ten cards that sold the most copies in that period. We don't factor in rarity or price, just sheer volume of cards sold. Then we count down our Top 10 to show you what the hottest cards are right up to today.

Why? Good question. If you're asking why number of cards sold instead of just the biggest money cards, the answer is twofold. First, you could figure out which cards had price spikes on your own. That's what the TCGplayer Price Guide is for; you can go set by set and get a full picture of recent market movement by price in a few moments.

But if your why is questioning the importance of the TCGplayer Marketplace for these kinds of numbers, that one's an easy answer too: instead of being one store, the Marketplace is a gateway to over 1000 active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers, and we've got the numbers for all of them. Since TCGplayer lets you comparison shop all those sellers by price, the massive volume of sales equates to a giant sample size.

And with a giant sample size, we can get some great insights.

If people are buying a ton of commons for one particular deck, we can deduce that a lot of players may take up that strategy in the next week or two. If there's a new product announcement and related cards sell like hotcakes, it's likely a direct market reaction to the news and we can use it to judge player enthusiasm about future releases. It's really useful for making predictions about tech picks, side deck cards, and wider competitive trends as well. That's why we do what we do.

So let's do it.

#10: D/D Necro Slime

You probably know that next week, we'll finally see the long-awaited TCG release of Structure Deck: Pendulum Domination. Different Dimension Demons have put in some solid Regional showings a few times over the past months, despite not having key cards found in the Structure, so there's strong expectation they'll do well once the Structure drops.

But with the set list now confirmed, we know for sure thatseveral cards aren't reprinted in the Structure Deck, and that made cards like D/D Necro Slime into top prospects this week.

#9: Return of the Dragon Lords

Return of the Dragon Lords was one of the top sellers of 2016, and that's continued into 2017 as Blue-Eyes White Dragon's quiet comeback continues, and upcoming releases have speculators embracing the card once again. Return's a safe investment with no likely reprint anywhere on the horizon, and it's a powerful card that's been a big hit from the moment it was first released.

Dragons are one of the four big staple monster types of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, along with Warriors, Spellcasters, and Fiends, and with that in mind Return of the Dragon Lords will always be a high-potential card. There will always be new, powerful Dragon cards right around the corner.

#8: Pre-Preparation of Rites

Another of 2016's biggest hits, Pre-Preparation of Rites came roaring back in the new year to rekindle some of its former glory as the card that spent more time at Number 1 on 2016 best-seller lists than any other. With Shinobirds launching in Raging Tempest the immediate demand is pretty easy to peg down, and hope springs eternal for further Pre-Prep compatible releases.

#7: D/D/D Flame King Genghis

We've seen D/D/D Flame King Genghis in our Market Watch Top 10's before, so a return to the Number 7 Position one week before Structure Deck Pendulum Domination is no surprise. This is a two-of and in some cases three-of, and while it's still at an accessible price point, it's an obviously good time to pick up your copies if you're going to be running the deck yourself.

#5: Pot of Acquisitiveness

A bit of a surprise hit given its low key status in 2016, flip-flopping from popular Side Deck tech to relative non-factor in competition again and again, Pot of Acquisitiveness surged this week as Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries continued to see more play in big events.

It's still cheap, and it's still a great idea to own a playset. Once Raging Tempest arrives we're going to see a steep decline in the sheer volume of Invasion: Vengeance packs being opened, and that's going to make Pot of Acquisitiveness a bit harder to find, especially on the local level. If you don't have yours yet, this might be your last good opportunity.

#4: Lullaby of Obedience

Super surprising to see Lullaby of Obedience surging under big demand this week. Did someone top with it? And if they did, does it really matter? While there's certainly a ton of Metalfoes and Paleozoic mirror matches going on right now, I'm not sure that justifies boosted demand for Lullaby, a card that arrived to massive hype but really just never delivered.

Heading into Raging Tempest there may be some expectation that Lullaby of Obedience could gain utility with Zoodiacs becoming ubiquitous, but even that seems like a risky thing to Gamble on. The card's just not reliable enough for current competition, and doesn't seem reliable enough for competition four weeks from now either.

Regardless, the market has clearly spoken.

#3: D/D Savant Thomas

While The Dark Illusion saw a second printing as a Special Edition in Europe, other TCG territories like North America didn't get another shot at D/D Savant Thomas. It's been a favorite in the eyes of speculators for months now, going from a 25 cent Rare to sellout status. You can't even find this card in a lot of areas right now, and it's likely to become the single biggest barrier for players wanting to run Different Dimension Demons next week.

No surprise to see it moving huge numbers the past four days. It'll likely be gone from the TCGplayer marketplace by the time the weekend's up.

#2: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

Kaijus keep getting more and more important as part of the OCG Zoodiac deck, and the Kaiju engine, complete with Interrupted Kaiju Slumber, saw some recent success towards the end of 2016. The reality is that Kaijus are awesome on their own to eliminate problem-monsters like ABC-Dragon Buster, Toadally Awesome, and Masked HERO Dark Law, and from there it's a short leap to diversifying your Kaijus and running an Interrupted Kaiju Slumber or two in place of Dark Hole or Raigeki.

To some, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber's basically just Dark Hole with free card advantage built in, leveraged straight into field presence. That's going to become a more common sentiment moving forward, and meanwhile Slumber's pushing the $5 mark.

#1: SPYRAL Super Agent

And finally, with new support slated for releasing Raging Tempest, SPYRAL Super Agent was our biggest seller of the week! It's not often we see a high profile Ultra Rare top the salescharts, but at an approachable $4 people finally started pulling the trigger and that kicked off a snowball effect.

Now SPYRAL Super Agent is largely impossible to find, on an upward price trend that's doubled its value this week: it's currently available for $9, but the sky's the limit and the market's at the mercy of whomever has copies left to sell. With some recent showings in Regionals and ARGCS tournaments, expectations are running pretty high for SPYRALs post-RATE.

That was the Top 10, but we also saw some interesting trends beyond the core countdown! Three big Side Deck cards saw massive niche interest from a small swarm of buyers this week, as Mistake, Shared Ride, and Mistaken Arrest sold in droves. All three cards have effects that limit your opponent's ability to search cards from their deck, and all three are hot prospects given the incoming Zoodiac theme. Zoodiacs pack six easy search spells - Fire Formation Tenki and Terraforming, played for Zodiac Sign so putting a kybosh on search effects can slow them down.

Don't get me wrong, virtually everything else relies on search effects too, but the run on Mistake, Shared Ride, and Mistaken Arrest is likely owed to this specific push factor. The timing just can't be ignored.

Meanwhile enthusiasm for Different Dimension Demons continued down through the Top 20: D/D/D Oblivion King Abyss Ragnarok nearly made the cut at Number 11, and Allure of Darkness clocked in at Number 12. Allure was one of the biggest sellers of 2016, so it's no surprise to see it surge again as a big Dark-centric deck makes its way to the TCG.

That's it for now, but check back Monday to find out what changes in then marketplace this weekend!
