Welcome to the final Market Watch before the full release of Raging Tempest!

The weekend saw hundreds of RATE Sneak Peeks across Europe, Australia, and North and Latin America, but those cards won't be tournament legal until the set officially goes on sale Friday. Raging Tempest isn't in pre-sale yet here on TCGplayer either, though it will be later this week. That means for now, in this unique moment, we can see what the top-selling cards non-Raging Tempest cards were from the RATE Sneak Peek weekend.

It's one last chance to see how players are bracing for the impact of 2017's first big booster, and in that context there's some really interesting data. One of the biggest questions surrounding the launch of Raging Tempest has to do with everything that came before it: specifically, which decks will survive the onslaught of Zoodiacs. And by identifying the bestselling cards from Friday to Monday, we can see what players were picking up last minute, in preparation for the new set.

Let's kick off today's Top 10 countdown with a card that might indicate a competitive factor moving forward.

#10: Metalfoes Mithrilium

Metalfoes barely made a peep in our Market Watch Top 10's through January, but suddenly on the eve of Zoodiacs and Infernoids, Metalfoes Mithrilium is back in the chase. Metalfoes have had a minor presence in reported OCG lists the past couple weeks – you can see examples here, courtesy of our friends over at The Organization – but the theme's become relatively obscure in most OCG metagames.

With that in mind, the sudden surge of interest in the key Metalfoes boss monster here stateside could indicate that a notable number of players are actually banking on the deck surviving Raging Tempest here in the TCG. Granted, it could also be an example of speculation as supply recovers and the card becomes more approachable. It's a toss-up, but it's something to keep in mind.

#9: My Body as a Shield

The Number 9 bestselling card from last week's Friday Market Watch was back at Number 9 again over the weekend. There are lots of reasons to run My Body as a Shield, stopping cards like Raigeki, Dark Hole, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber, and even Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, all of which will see lots of play moving forward. But the biggest might be Zoodiac Drident, which commonly arrives on Turn 1 and then controls the field so the Zoodiac player can win on Turn 2.

My Body As A Shield is gaining momentum because it's the most versatile option available: it's a Quick-Play, so it's faster than Solemn traps and does a better job covering the “you're stuck going second” scenario. And while Forbidden Chalice has been popular lately, and can answer the Drident threat, Shield has the advantage of destroying the card it's negating (and stopping non-monster threats).

You're going to want to own this card moving forward, and with non-foils and Gold Rares still approachable, now's a great time to get your playset. The Duel Terminal Mosaic Rare Common has already spiked, costing $15 or more. By the end of the week they could be sold out from TCGplayer entirely.

#8: D/D Savant Thomas

Different Dimension Demons continued to do really well after their rally last week, though D/D/D Flame King Genghis was notably missing from the Top 10 over the weekend. Flame King sunk to Number 13 this time around, outpaced by D/D Lamia at Number 12.

Still, that's a surprising level of interest in D/D/D's as we head toward the release of the set that marked the strategy's demise in the OCG. It seems like a significant number of duelists might try and keep the D/D/D fires burning post-RATE, so don't be surprised to see them in your tournaments for at least a couple weeks.

#7: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

Down from the Number 2 spot last week, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber still showed strong sales as more and more players prepare for the notion that Slumber will become the new Dark Hole for numerous strategies. Main Decked Kaiju engines have become very popular in lots of competitive OCG metagames, and the expectation that we'll see the same shift here has made Interrupted Kaiju Slumber a huge seller since mid-January on forward.

#6: Return of the Dragon Lords

We've seen big demand for Return of the Dragon Lords ever since the reprinting of Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon in Movie Pack: Gold Edition, and though Blue-Eyes is nowhere near as viable as it was toward the end of last summer, it's been topping regularly again for months now, starting with a multi-event comeback around the time of YCS Anaheim.

Return of the Dragon Lords is a must-run three-of for a deck that fuses fan appeal with real competitive potential, and while both Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Return of the Dragon Lords are largely gone from OCG competition, enthusiasm for Return remains strong.

#5: Ritual Sanctuary

Ritual Sanctuary continues to be a powerful card with no real home in competition. Brandon Ramos managed to Top 8 with an innovative build of Star Seraph Rituals two weeks ago at the Nevada Regional Qualifier, but beyond that we haven't seen Ritual Sanctuary in a Top Cut for ages, and there are no killer apps for it on the horizon, at least as far as I'm aware.

Still, it's a high-potential card at an affordable price, coming off a flashy Top 8. And with new themes like Shinobirds garnering attention, there's at least a general awareness that new Ritual themes are always waiting in the wings (no pun intended). Those factors may have all combined to push Ritual Sanctuary back to the Top 5 Position.

#4: Allure of Darkness

Allure remains one of the best draws cards ever printed, and it was one of the top selling cards of 2016. It's perpetually popular, and it always sees a surge whenever it's reprinted. That said, that release wasn't exactly yesterday and seeing a resurgence of interest in Allure of Darkness right now is interesting.

The only deck playing it in the OCG right now seems to be Kozmos, and while that deck saw some recent success in the TCG, I doubt it's going to keep much of a presence through Raging Tempest.

#3: D/D Necro Slime

#2: D/D Swirl Slime

Once again, the two Fusion-enabling Slime cards were way up there on the bestseller lists. It wasn't unlikely at any point, but now that we've seen a few Different Dimension Demon decks Top 8'ing Regionals it's a total lock that both cards are three-ofs in any competitive version of the strategy.

The interesting twist now is the issue of availability. Both D/D/ Necro Slime and D/D Swirl Slime have sold out entirely multiple times over the past few days, despite being simple Commons that were printed not once, but twice – first in Dimension of Chaos and then again in the 2016 Mega-Pack. While widespread demand continues for both cards, it's possible speculators are also trying to choke out the market, which is kind of weird timing since lots of players don't expect Different Dimension Demons to survive the next few weeks of competition.

#1: Dark Hole

And finally, another of the top-selling cards of 2016 is back on top at the Number 1 position. Dark Hole is essentially a staple right now in the OCG, as a must-run in either your Main or Side Deck to help solve big Turn 1 fields.

That's extremely likely to become the case here stateside as well, and the massive surge of interest we saw over the weekend reaffirms that. Expect to see Dark Hole everywhere in tournament competition.

And that's it! Our last look at the TCGplayer Marketplace before Raging Tempest reshapes everything later this week. Pre-sales for the new cards will begin in just a few days, and at that point we'll likely see a clean slate as new classics take over the Top 10.

Be sure to join us Friday to see how that hashes out, as we'll get our first taste of direct player response to the new cards. Exciting times!
