Market Watch: Kaijus, Kozmos, and Red-Eyed Dice?!?

Welcome to the release day of the Raging Tempest booster set!

The latest core release hits shelves and goes tournament legal today, and it's been available in the TCGplayer Marketplace in pre-sale for about 24 hours already. But that limited pre-sale stock actually wasn't sufficient to outpace more widely available cards, which means we'll have to wait until Monday to see what the top-sellers are from the new set.

In the mean time we get one more last look at the marketplace pre-Raging Tempest, and while I've definitely written that before, it feels alright because we got to see some notable changes in the Top 10 bestselling cards from Monday to now, including some surprising trends.

Let's dive in!

#10: Dark Hole

The Number 1 best-selling card over the weekend sunk to Number 10 this week, but Dark Hole still managed to remain in the Top 10 as players stock up and prepare for the Zoodiac era. The ability to clear big, developed boards has been hugely important lately with cards like Toadally Awesome, Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, and Fullmetalfoes Alkahest running the show. But the disruptive powers of Zoodiacs and Infernoids, bolstered by cards like Zoodiac Drident and That Grass Looks Greener, is going to make field clearing even more important.

Dark Hole remains one of the strongest neutralizers in the game, and while alternative answers like Forbidden Chalice and My Body as a Shield have been big sellers as well, you can expect virtually everyone to be packing the classic mass removal spell moving forward.

#9: The Legendary Exodia Incarnate

This thing somehow managed to outsell a wealth of cards central to competitive play, and nobody I've spoken to is quite sure why. Our own Loukas Peterson wrote a deck fix article that centered on The Legendary Exodia Incarnate a short while ago, but that's not the kind of thing that spikes demand to the point of making a card into a Top 10 bestseller.

The best theory I was able to find came from our friends over at The Organization, who noted that there's a Nekroz Metalfoes variant that dumps Exodia pieces to the graveyard with Advanced Ritual Art, and then uses Metalfoes to destroy Obliterate!!! and leverage the retrieved card into a 5000 ATK Exodia Incarnate. Cool stuff, and something I'd never considered.

Got your own theory? Shout it out in the comments! This wasn't just a couple people buying out hundreds of copies of Exodia Incarnate – this trend was widespread. Mysterious.

#8: Allure of Darkness

Less mysterious: the sustained demand for one of the single most popular cards in the game. Allure of Darkness remains one of the best “Draw 2” cards ever printed, and it's perpetually popular. With decks like Burning Abyss and Dark-heavy Kozmo strategies making comebacks in tournament competition, a lot of rogue picks are running Allure right now. That's pushed it from solid standby into a trending position on the salescharts.

#7: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

We've seen Interrupted Kaiju Slumber charting for weeks now, largely inspired by its success in the OCG combatting Zoodiacs. The thought process is simple: if you're already running Kaijus to fight your way through big disruption-heavy monsters, then Interrupted Kaiju Slumber is largely just a better version of Dark Hole, a card that would be worth running even when it's not fielding a big beatstick with close to 3000 ATK as a free +1 of card economy.

As long as Slumber remains affordable, we'll likely see it continue to sell strongly in the coming weeks. Be ready for it when you hit tournaments this weekend; it's going to be a common sight in competitive metagames.

#6: Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon

Blue-Eyes White Dragon decks started to make a comeback last year around the time of YCS Anaheim, and the strategy's continued to slowly gain momentum ever since, getting a big push when Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon was reprinted in Movie Pack: Gold Edition a few weeks ago. With abilities that can limit Pendulum Summoning, restrict Infernoid effects, and dodge stuff like Zoodiac Drident, it's easy to see the appeal.

Blue-Eyes didn't really survive the Raging Tempest onslaught in Japan, so investing in the deck now seems like a bit of a Gamble. But it's the sort of trend I love to see in our Market Watch columns, because if it weren't for these strong sales indicators, there'd be no real reason to expect the deck in tournaments moving forward.

For now, it seems like Blue-Eyes may remain a competitive factor for a while, at least in in North America.

#5: D/D Necro Slime

Raging Tempest effectively demolished Different Dimension Demons in the OCG, and on the eve of that release we're finally seeing the impact of that fact, as some of the top D/D/D cards slide from the Top 10. But that said, D/D Necro Slime – and as you'll see, D/D Swirl Slime – are both still seeing huge sales. It's impossible to tell how D/D/D's will fare in the coming weeks, but it's clear that a number of players will still be trying to run the deck post-RATE.

Maybe they're gambling that an impending F&L List will level the playing field and keep Different Dimension Demons competitive? It could happen, though I wouldn't place that bet myself.

#4: Blue-Eyes White Dragon

Riding high off the surging interest in the Blue-Eyes White Dragon deck… Blue-Eyes White Dragon! Who'da guessed?

While Blue-Eyes itself always benefits from nostalgia sales and a heavy fan-base, seeing it at Number 4 in our Top 10 countdown is surprising, and again suggests that Blue-Eyes decks could remain a competitive factor for several weeks to come.

#3: Kozmo Delta Shuttle

With Fire King Kozmos making a number of recent Top 8's in Regionals, interest in Kozmos has surged; players are returning to the deck and trying to get ahead of a possible trend.

Kozmo Tincan clocked in at Number 14 over the past four days too, and while Delta Shuttle is still an easy get, the Marketplace is virtually sold out of Tincans, with fewer than twenty copies available and most of those sitting around the $10 mark – twice their average Market Price last week.

#2: D/D Swirl Slime

While D/D/D Flame King Genghis fell to Number 11 and D/D Savant Thomas disappeared from the top salescharts entirely, D/D Swirl Slime remained a top-seller along with Necro Slime. And note that after the sellout situations we saw the past week and a half, supply has now recovered in the TCGplayer Marketplace; Swirl Slimes are once again widely available. Surging supply has put the card on a downward price trend, even though demand remains blazingly hot.

#1: Speedroid Red-Eyed Dice

And finally, our top-selling card of the week from Monday to Friday was Speedroid Red-Eyed Dice. This one came out of nowhere, but it's not super surprising: Speedroids are commonly played with Zoodiacs, and while Red-Eyed Dice isn't a part of the traditional four-card Speedroid suite, it does play a key role in a number of hyped combos. Goyo Defender's the basis for a number of prospective plays that have people talking, and Speedroid Terrortop + Speedroid Red-Eyed Dice is a great way to get into it.

Red-Eyed Dice may not wind up seeing play any time soon, but the possibility's there. And while lots of players own Speedroid Terrortop and Speedroid Taketomborg, plenty may not have had Speedroid Red-Eyed Dice yet since it just hasn't seen much tournament time.

With Speedroid Terrortop hovering around fifteen bucks and Speedroid Taketomborg pushing $3, Speedroid Red-Eyed Dice is an attractive buy at under a dollar. This seems like a reasonable market correction given the forces at work.

Join us on Monday to see how the release pans out, and the top bestsellers from the new set!
