Welcome back to Part 2 of TCGplayer's Giant RATE Set Review! Yesterday I outlined the first half of the core set's Effect Monsters, focusing on the Zoodiacs and Windwitches. Today we're taking a look at the second half of the Effect Monster lineup, as well as two Ritual Monsters.

As a refresher, the Giant Raging Tempest Set Review is a five-part series where I analyze all of the stuff I think's cool from the new set: competitive standouts, casual choices, and hidden gems. But I can't cover every card, so feel free to let me know if I missed your favorite.

Anyway we've got a lot to look at, so let's get started!

When I heard that new Spirit monsters were getting released I almost had a heart attack. Back in 2014, I picked up Spirits using Aratama and Nikitama to earn my first Regional Qualifier Top 8, and I ended up running the deck for over seven months straight. Loukas Peterson and I played Spirits in a ton of different strategies, and it was one of my fondest memories playing Yu-Gi-Oh.

And then Raging Tempest leaked, and I saw that there weren't just a couple Spirits, but rather a whole new theme! And they were good! It was a miracle.

Shinobird Crane carries the same restrictions as the Spirits that came before it. It can't be Special Summoned, and it bounces back to the hand during the turn it's Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. But then, it has the added effect that nets you a draw once per turn when another Spirit monster is Normal or Special Summoned.

But wait, why would it get a draw off of Spirit monsters being Special Summoned if they can't be Special Summoned? Well, there's some really cool support that I'll discuss later that makes that clear, but for now just know that it's a huge difference maker, and it's also what keeps it from being a worse Nikitama. Crane carries some stats that will come up later on, too: 1500 ATK and DEF, Winged-Beast, and Wind.

There was a point where Ritual Beasts were one of the most feared rogue decks going. There were a bunch of two-card combos that let you loop Ritual Beast Ulti-Cannahawk over and over again to search out Ritual Beast Steeds and Ritual Beast Ambush on Turn 1, creating a crazy first turn board that could withstand a huge amount of removal. That eventually lead to Ulti-Cannahawk being Limited, and we've never heard from Ritual Beasts since.

However, Spiritual Beast Tamer Winda helps out the deck's current issues a ton. The important part here is that Winda's both a Spiritual Beast and a Ritual Beast Tamer. The basic Ritual Beast Fusions are all summoned by banishing a Spiritual Beast and a Tamer, requiring specific parts that you have to assemble. Winda can substitute as either of them, adding a whole new dynamic.

Additionally, if Winda's destroyed by an opposing card, you can Special Summon one of the Fusions from your Extra Deck ignoring the summoning conditions. That isn't a once per turn effect, so if you brought out two to the field at the same time by “tagging out” one of the Fusions you could really put your opponent in a rough spot. Since this format seems to be all about mass destruction, Winda adds a layer of resiliency to a forgotten deck. If Ulti-Cannahawk ever gets Semi-Limited or removed from the F&L List entirely, expect Winda to be a mainstay in all Ritual Beast variants.

In terms of flashy but impractical, Tierra, Source of Destruction might take the cake. It's so dangerously close to being playable that you might've seen a few FTK's with it on social media lately, but it's largely irrelevant even on a casual level.

If anything tops with this thing I'd be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not holding my breath.

Sort of like Ancient Gear Hunting Hound in Part 1, Miscellaneousaurus is going to become a standard choice in the upcoming Dinosaur deck. It has two powerful effects: one that gives your Dinosaurs protection from activated card effects, and one that Special Summons Dinosaurs from the deck, but destroys the monster during the End Phase.

That second one's downside is hardly worth worrying about because a bunch of the new Dinosaurs get effects when they're destroyed, which essentially means Miscellaneousaurus has three useful effects. That, backed by an 1800 ATK body, makes for a really good support card.

Apprentice Piper might not look amazing, but it's actually incredible in the context of draft formats and Duel Links, the new mobile game that recently hit app stores everywhere. Draft formats don't look like they'll ever officially come back, but I'd love to see this added to Duel Links because it would benefit a ton of rogue decks in that game.

Another new Spirit monster, Hebo, Lord of the River turns a monster on the field into a Spirit monster, forcing it to return to the hand during the End Phase. That's a neat effect that can be used in a couple ways, but so far the best one I've come up with is bouncing back Kaijus to reuse them on later turns. It's kind of slow and the new Ritual Spirits accomplish the same thing more reliably, but it's interesting nonetheless.

The super funny play you can do, though, is combo Hebo with Legacy of Yata-Garasu to draw two cards. In the long run it's probably not worth trying, but man would it be awesome to pull that off against a real life opponent.

One my personal favorite cards in the set, Wightprincess brings some much needed support to Skull Servants. On a fundamental level, Skull Servants want to send Wightprince to the graveyard as early and often as possible, because it builds up your graveyard with Skull Servants to boost King of the Skull Servants, or it Special Summons it from the deck. Loukas Peterson ran a build about a month ago that used Uni-Zombie to pitch Wightprince from the deck, and I fooled around with a similar concept on my YouTube channel two weeks ago.

Wightprincess makes things even better, though, because it acts as extra copies of Uni-Zombie. Its ATK is a useable 1600, and it includes a neat discarding effect to help win some of the harder battles. It also counts as a Skull Servant, bringing up King of the Skull Servants by even more ATK than was ever possible before.

Coupled with the other new card That Grass Looks Greener, Wightprincess makes Skull Servants a definite rogue pick for someone looking to score their first invite at a Regional Qualifier. Expect that deck to be covered soon on a later date!

We're going to wrap up Part 2 of the Giant Set Review by looking at two Ritual Monsters that represent a lot of firsts. Shinobaroness Peacock and Shinobaron Peacock are the first Ritual Spirits, Ritual Winged-Beasts, and Ritual Winds. That's a lot of firsts, and it makes them really unique from a design perspective.

Rituals and Spirits might seem like the worst combination of cards effect. Ritual Monsters require a large investment of cards to summon, and Spirits bounce back to the hand during the End Phase. Building a deck around cards that are both of those wouldn't work unless there was a lot of card advantage gaining effects to circumvent the cost.

Luckily, there are a ton of those!

Shinobaroness Peacock's effect lets you shuffle back up to three backrow cards without targeting them, and then you can Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Spirit from your deck. That's insane. Like, if this effect was on any other monster in the past it would have been broken. It's a potential +4 in card economy, and it combos with Shinobird Crane as well to give you a free draw.

The other neat part about the Spirit Rituals is that when they return to your hand in the End Phase you get two Tokens with the same stats as Shinobird Crane. That might not seem good enough these days, but it sets you up to activate Urgent Ritual Art on your opponent's turn to get Baronesses' effect on their turn. Urgent Ritual Art's never found a home, but Ritual Spirits are finally giving it one.

Shinobaroness is a bigger swing in card economy, but Shinobaron Peacock is just as good if not better. It shares all the same effects as Shinobaroness except that it affects monsters instead of backrow, and it returns them to the hand instead of the deck. It also Special Summons the Spirit from your hand, too, making it not as crazy.

Shinobaron Peacock's still a great card, and in many cases it might be a clear winner over Shinobaroness because of the number of chainable backrow cards seeing play right now.

The best part is that their Ritual Spell, Shinobird's Calling, mentions both of these monsters by name, so you can add it with Pre-Preparation of Rites. There's some other tricks about the Spirit spells and traps that I'll save until Part 4 of the Set Review, but for now the important part is the Pre-Preparation of Rites adds another layer of free cards to make up for the initial loss in card economy.

And with that, we'll end Part 2 of the Giant Raging Tempest Set Review! Next time we'll take a look at the best and brightest Extra Deck monsters, which make up a whopping 16 cards of the main set! Make sure to check back tomorrow to get the full scope of Zoodiacs, Windwitches, and Ancient Gears!
