Finally! After a couple false starts, we have our first look at the impact of Raging Tempest.

If you're just joining us for the first time, let's give you a quick recap of what we do here in Market Watch: every Monday and Friday we examine sales numbers from the last few days in the TCGplayer Marketplace, Friday morning to Monday morning, and Monday morning to Friday morning. We count down the Top 10 bestselling cards by number of cards sold, because by doing so, we can get at information that wouldn't be represented by price spike information alone.

When you know which cards people are buying, you can make a lot of educated guesses. Sometimes cards sell in big quantities in response to upcoming products. Sometimes it's the effect of news from the Asian OCG. And sometimes it can indicate a migration of players to a particular strategy. It can even help pinpoint individual tech cards or Side Deck picks that are starting to trend, before they appear in tournaments.

All that information can help you understand the direction the game is headed, in both the secondary market and tournament play. So without further ado, let's take a look at the biggest movers and shakers from the release weekend of Raging Tempest.

#10: Ancient Gear Howitzer

The Machine Reactor Structure Deck is just two months away, launching April 14th in conjunction with the Dinosmasher's Fury Structure. That's created early demand for the new Ancient Gear monsters in Raging Tempest as players and speculators look to get ahead of the curve.

As a common, Ancient Gear Howitzer is wildly affordable. As a two-Material Fusion Monster, it's just as accessible in terms of gameplay. A solid burn ability and a valuable Special Summoning effect make this a potentially playable prospect, and that potential was enough to get it into the Top 10.

#9: Ancient Gear Hunting Hound

One of the fundamental pillars of the new Ancient Gear deck we'll see in April, Ancient Gear Hunting Hound brings a ridiculous level of flexibility to a relatively stiff theme. Burning your opponent for quick damage when it's Normal Summoned, it's both a Polymerization substitute and a Fusion Material for Ancient Gears.

Paired with any other Ancient Gear monster, Hunting Hound makes for an instant Ancient Gear Howitzer. Add two more Fusion Materials to the mix and you've got Ancient Gear Giant' rel="/db/WP-CH.asp?CN=Chaos Ancient Gear Giant">Chaos Ancient Gear Giant, packing 4500 ATK, piercing damage, and an effect that lets it attack all of your opponent's monsters.

As another hugely accessible common that could become relevant in April, the demand for Ancient Gear Hunting Hound is easily understood.

#8: Windwitch Ice Bell

Our first foil entry into the Top 10, Windwitch Ice Bell is already hugging the ten dollar mark in its average Market Price. Effectively Speedroid Terrortop for Windwitches, Ice Bell Special Summons a companion Windwitch straight from your deck, feeding easy plays for stuff like Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon. It even packs burn damage as a bonus, which is kind of obscene given the card's strength strictly as a Summoning engine.

Windwitches do see some competitive play in the OCG, and that's made Ice Bell a top prospect right off the bat in our TCG.

#7: Ancient Gear Giant' rel="/db/WP-CH.asp?CN=Chaos Ancient Gear Giant">Chaos Ancient Gear Giant

The big boss of the revitalized Ancient Gear theme, Ancient Gear Giant' rel="/db/WP-CH.asp?CN=Chaos Ancient Gear Giant">Chaos Ancient Gear Giant is practically three Asura Priests sewn together into one mechanical monstrosity, attacking all your opponent's monsters with 4500 ATK. And piercing damage. And a ton of synergy with new cards from Raging Tempest, as well as expected cards from the Machine Reactor Structure Deck.

Again, as a Super Rare the card it's still easily had for less than fifty cents, and while it debuted at a higher price point, Ancient Gear Giant' rel="/db/WP-CH.asp?CN=Chaos Ancient Gear Giant">Chaos Ancient Gear Giant immediately fell to a declining price trend that helped sustain demand. While gambling on Ancient Gears in April is definitely a Gamble, those cheap bets where you stand to lose very little are frequently the best kind of bet to make.

And lots of people clearly made those bets over the weekend.

#6: Zoodiac Whiptail

Zoodiacs absolutely delivered on the hype their first Regional weekend out, and Zoodiac Whiptail was a three-of in virtually every Top 8 Kaiju Zoodiac or pure Zoodiac build we saw. One copy is also a must-run in most variants splashing Zoodiacs too, like Metalfoes, Infernoids, and Burning Abyss. Adding 1200 ATK to your Zoodiac Xyz, and granting the Zoodiacs it's attached to a killer banishing effect that can solve problems and help you push for wins, Zoodiac Whiptail is one of the biggest cards in the set, and sales may only have been limited by the fact that the Secret Rare status of other Zoodiac cards is throttling immediate demand.

Whiptail's going to be one of the biggest cards of the year, so it's no surprise to see it at Number 6.

#5: Dragoncaller Magician

Is there a killer app for this? I'm aware of a lot of niche uses for Dragoncaller Magician, ranging from Material for Englightenment Paladin and Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight, to setting up big swings with Buster Blader, the Dragon Destroyer Swordsman, but I'm not sure how it managed to outsell cards like Zoodiac Whiptail.

As far as I'm aware, even the rare few Zoodiac Magician builds that have been topping in OCG territories don't run this card. Let me know what I'm missing down in the comments.

#4: Delta The Magnet Warrior

This one's no surprise, since we started seeing companion cards appearing in our Market Watch Top 10's as soon as rumors of Delta The Magnet Warrior's release in Raging Tempest started to make the rounds online. A well-constructed card for a fan-favorite theme, Delta The Magnet Warrior rekindles a little of that 2016 throwback spirit and has obvious fan appeal, especially at its super-accessible price point.

#3: Fusion Recycling Plant

Easily one of the most popular Sneak Peek promos of the last few years, Fusion Recycling Plant's proven popular for numerous Fusion Summoning strategies, helping solve the problem of heavily-costed Fusion Monsters on both ends of the equation. As long as you can dodge removal on the chain, its first effect can help you load your graveyard and search Polymerization. That effect can even recur a used Polymerization, helping you build your deck more efficiently and granting more longevity.

And if you draw multiple copies of Recycling Plant? Just pitch them to turn them in for Polymerizations. Super convenient.

On the flipside, Fusion Recycling Plant's free effect redeems one Fusion Material per turn. It effectively promotes consistency on the front end, and healthy card economy on the back end. It's a really solid piece of design, balanced by the risk of a hard loss against something like Mystical Space Typhoon or similar chained removal. I don't know if it'll see serious table time, but it's certainly possible, and it's a definite card-to-watch.

#2: Zoodiac Ratpier

The only thing surprising about Zoodiac Ratpier clocking in at Number 2 is that it's not Number 1. Inarguably the best card in Raging Tempest, Ratpier debuted as a Super Rare, and while supply is still deep it's already three times the price of other RATE Supers. It's a must-own, featuring in both dedicated and lightly modified Zoodiac decks as well as every small-engine variant splashing the theme.

As far as your Main Deck's concerned, Zoodiac Ratpier basically is the Zoodiac engine.

So why didn't it take the Number 1 spot? Again, unless someone's speculating or buying up cards they can't use yet, Zoodiac Ratpier requires a bunch of high-end Xyz Monsters to work. The most common split we've seen so far is one Zoodiac Boarbow, two Zoodiac Broadbull, two Zoodiac Tigermortar, and two Zoodiac Drident. And while Boarbow's a common, Tigermortar's currently a six dollar Ultra Rare, while Broadbull and Drident are 30 dollar Secret Rares that could easily hit $35 each by the end of the week.

Add in the necessity of Zoodiac Barrage currently selling for ninety bucks and you need a ton of cards to actually put Zoodiac Ratpier to work. That's probably what kept it from being the bestselling card in the set over the weekend.

#1: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

Meanwhile the early frontrunner for the most sought-after card in Raging Tempest is none other than the latest of the True Kings. While the True King strategy gets its biggest boost from Maximum Crisis, True King Lithosagym, the Disaster has an effect that's really tempting right now. With the ability to banish up to three cards from your opponent's Extra Deck, it can shred numerous strategies by removing win condition level monsters from the equation. It answers a vast portion of the threats we expect to see in competition moving forward, and combined with the growth potential in value, that made it just as expensive as Zoodiac Ratpier.

What else was hot in the first weekend of Raging Tempest? Wightprincess moved huge numbers to a niche audience, as Skull Servant fans came out of the woodwork en masse. Just below the Top 10, we saw Ancient Gear Reborn at Number 11; Heavy Armored Train Ironwolf at Number 12; Windwitch Glass Bell at 13; Crystron Sulfefnir at Number 14; and Spiritual Beast Tamer Winda at Number 15.

Could that indicate low key interest and a possible comeback for Ritual Beasts? Will Ancient Gears deliver in April? And will cards like Fusion Recycling Plant and Dragoncaller Magician prove to be one-hit wonders? The Top 8 fields at Regional Qualifiers this past weekend appear to have been surprisingly open despite strong performances from Zoodiacs and Infernoids, so the shape of YCS Seattle is still up in the air.

That said, we'll see what's big this week in the TCGplayer Marketplace in our Friday Market Watch, so be sure to drop by then and see how things develop over the next four days. See you then!
