Welcome back to the Giant Raging Tempest Set Review! In Parts 1 and 2 we looked at the Effect Monsters in the core release, outlining competitive heavy hitters like Zoodiacs and Windwitches, and also touching on casual picks like the new Shinobird Spirits and Wightprincess.

Today we'll look at some of the best cards in the set: the Extra Deck monsters. As always, I can't get to every card, so if your favorite is missing feel free to let me know in the comments.

Let's get started.

In terms of raw aggressive power, Ancient Gear Giant' rel="/db/WP-CH.asp?CN=Chaos Ancient Gear Giant">Chaos Ancient Gear Giant might be one of the highest ranked monsters out there. It takes any four Ancient Gears to bring out, and it can't be Special Summoned besides Fusion Summon, but boy does it have a lot of effects to make up for that.

First, it's unaffected by spells and traps. That has no downside, restriction, or cost. Then, during your Battle Phase, all of your opponent's monster's effects can't activate. As if that wasn't enough, it can attack each of your opponent's monsters once per turn, and it dishes out piercing damage against defense position monsters.

Oh, and because it's a Dark Machine Fusion, you can Fusion Summon it with Overload Fusion. This thing is nuts, and gets even better in a couple weeks when we get the rest of the Ancient Gear cards in the new Structure Deck.

While Windwitch - Winter Bell does have a few cute effects, you're really only using it to Synchro climb into Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon. The only reason you'd summon it over regular Clear Wing Synchro Dragon is because you can inflict a small amount of damage to your opponent with Winter Bell.

It's an alright card, but it's better for what it is, than what it does.

Yes! I've been playing Shiranui Solitaire, Uni-Zombie, and Mezuki in a ton of decks over the past couple months, and I'm pumped for Shiranui Sunsaga. It's a Level 10 with 3500 ATK that needs a Zombie Tuner and Non-Tuner to summon, but there aren't any other restrictions holding it back.

When you summon it, you can Return Zombie Synchro Monsters from your graveyard back to your Extra Deck, and then destroy cards on the field equal to how many you returned. You'll probably get a couple destructions off that effect, instantly compensating you for making such a large Synchro Summon.

Also, if a Zombie would be destroyed you can banish a Shiranui in your graveyard instead, once per turn. That's awesome for two reasons: one, all of your Shiranui monsters have effects when they're banished, like summoning monsters or destroying cards; and two, because the biggest bane to Zombies has been a weakness to board wipes like Raigeki, Dark Hole, and Interrupted Kaiju Slumber. Sunsaga's easy to summon even on Turn 1, and it's a huge boost to conventional Zombie decks and other variants running small Zombie engines. Outside of the original Shiranui monsters themselves, Sunsaga's some of the best Zombie support in a long time.

I'm all for train support, but Heavy Armored Train Ironwolf is more likely to find itself in virtually any other deck than a dedicated train build. As the name would suggest, Rank 10 Trains usually focus on, well, Rank 10's, so Heavy Armored Train Ironwolf is nearly impossible to use.

However, it packs two neat effects that are sure to pop up in some decks, ABC-Buster Dragon variants being the first to come to mind. Its primary effect lets you select a Machine and turn it into a Number 47: Nightmare Shark. It can attack directly, but none of your other monsters can attack. That's great for avoiding big boards and striking your opponent's life points, especially when you consider the massive 3000 ATK that ABC-Buster Dragon brings to the table.

What's better is that it also has an effect when it's destroyed: you get to search your deck for a Level 4 Machine monster. It's not as fast a Gear Gigant X, but it's an excellent backup plan for when your initial strategy of attacking directly falls short. Heavy Armored Train Ironwolf is going to be a fantastic choice in Level 4 Machine decks, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it top tournaments in the future.

We looked at Zoodiac Ratpier, Zoodiac Whiplash, and Zoodiac Thoroughblade last time, and now we'll see what makes Zoodiacs so powerful, starting with Zoodiac Broadbull. Basically, all of the Zoodiac Xyz Monsters have an ability that lets you summon them from the Extra Deck by overlaying them on top of a differently named Zoodiac monster, even other Xyz. The drawback is that the Zoodiac Xyz Monsters only have ATK based on their Xyz Material, so if you only have other Xyz Monsters or Ratpier attached they won't be able to attack over anything. Not a huge deal considering how easily you can get to other, bigger Xyz Monsters, but definitely worth mentioning.

That usually means you're cycling through all four Zoodiac Xyz on top of an initial Zoodiac Ratpier, to get its effect multiple times in the same turn. That's huge, and it's why Zoodiacs are so consistent: all you need is one Level 4 to start all of your combos.

What makes Broadbull so special is that its on-field effect grabs a Beast-Warrior from your deck, which has numerous applications in and out of a Zoodiac deck. Grabbing Whiplash is the most common response, but you could also search Coach Captain Bearman for some slick Rank 8 plays, or even fringe stuff like Subterror Nemesis Defender or Bujin Yamato. Broadbull hasn't really been experimented with outside of Zoodiacs, but it's a generic Rank 4 that searches monsters so it's sure to be relevant even after Zoodiacs fall from favor.

Zoodiac Tigermortar carries many of the same effects as Broadbull, but the difference maker is that it can swap out its material with a monster in the graveyard. That's crucial for continuing your chain of Ratpier summons, and it also means you can summon it over another Zoodiac if you have a Ratpier in the graveyard that was destroyed, too.

Tigermortar's generally a stepping stone between Zoodiac Xyz, but it's still an important piece to almost all of your combos.

The go-to final Zoodiac Xyz Monster after a chain of summons, Zoodiac Drident provides everything you could want, namely once per turn destruction of any face-up card on either player's turn.

What's great about Drident is it makes Zoodiacs resilient against a lot of floodgates that would normally hinder a deck so focused on Xyz. Even if your opponent uses Maxx “C” on your Ratpier summon you can just make Drident and pass instead of having to give your opponent a bunch of free draws.

It also means that decks relying heavily on their Normal Summon are in a rough spot going forward. It's pretty much guaranteed that a Zoodiac player's going to end their first turn with Drident on the field, so if you need your first Normal Summon to be successful you'll need a way to get rid of Drident quickly.

One thing you'll quickly learn when testing against Zoodiacs is that they don't often make the sort of “unbreakable” boards we've come to expect in 2016, but the boards that they do make are made consistently enough to be annoying, and they all basically need just one card to get going. Drident might not look threatening, but when your opponent can summon it next to a Daigusto Emeral and a search off of one of their opening five cards, you'll start to realize why it's so scary over the course of a longer tournament.

Without a doubt the least impactful of all the Zoodiac Xyz Monsters, Zoodiac Boarbow's still a necessary piece to the basic combo. There's definitely some variations of the typical Zoodiac opening, but the quick explanation is:

- Summon Zoodiac Ratpier

- Summon Boarbow over it

- Summon Tigermortar over the Boarbow

- Detach Boarbow to summon a second Ratpier from your deck

- Summon Broadbull over Tigermortar

- Detach Tigermortar to summon a third Ratpier

- Detach the original Ratpier to search Whiplash

- Summon Drident over Broadbull

- Overlay the two Ratpiers to make Daigusto Emeral, shuffling back three monsters to draw

At the end of that one-card combo, you have two Xyz Monsters, a search, and a draw. And, if you Normal Summoned the Ratpier, you could have also sent Zoodiac Combo to the graveyard, which on your following turn will recycle five Zoodiacs in your graveyard! This combo and variations of it are the bread and butter of Zoodiacs. You'll probably never use Boarbow's effect in a duel, but you need it as Xyz Material to make sure you can get two Ratpier summons and a Broadbull search.

And that's going to wrap up Part 3 of the Giant Set Review! A common theme so far in Raging Tempest is great competitive cards bolstered by some needed legacy support, and that's a continuing trend that we'll notice in Parts 4 and 5, too. Join us tomorrow when we discuss the spells and traps out of the main set, and how they really bring together a lot of what we've already been talking about, like Zoodiacs, Shinobirds, and more.
