Market Watch: Raging Tempest, Lancea, Slumber, and Number 98

Welcome back to today's installment of Market Watch, our first Friday Top 10 after the first complete week of Raging Tempest.

Monday's Market Watch saw RATE take over the TCGplayer Marketplace, just like previous core releases. Zoodiacs were an obvious hit, with Zoodiac Ratpier at Number 2 and Zoodiac Whiptail at Number 6. More surprisingly, we saw hype for the upcoming Machine Reactor Structure Deck drive Ancient Gear Howitzer, Ancient Gear Hunting Hound, and Chaos Ancient Gear Giant into the Number 10, Number 9, and Number 7 spots respectively.

Windwitch – Ice Bell took the Number 8 slot; Dragoncaller Magician took Number 5; Delta The Magnet Warrior took Number 4; Fusion Recycling Plant took Number 3; and the most popular card from the set turned out to be True King Lithosagym, the Disaster.

Four days later, the sales numbers from Monday to Friday have seen some big shifts. Normally when a new set drops, new cards from that set dominate the Top 10 for weeks. This time there were multiple cards that topped the salescharts from previous releases, largely evidence of swift responses to the Zoodiac threat. Speculation on Ancient Gears died down, and with Zoodiac Drident and Zoodiac Broadbull in short supply, Whiptail and Ratpier fell from the Top 10 as well.

So let's see what made the cut. Here are the Top 10 bestselling cards by sheer number of cards sold from Monday to Friday.

#10: Artifact Lancea

No surprise here. With four different flavors of Infernoids topping tournaments last weekend, Artifact Lancea's sure to become a three-of Side Deck pick for lots of different duelists. While it's seen play before, it was only used occasionally through most of 2016, and that means a lot of competitors don't have their copies yet.

Infernoids have lots of new ways to play through Imperial Iron Wall thanks to Void Feast and the Zoodiac engine, so Artifact Lancea's suddenly the go-to answer. It's surprising to see Lancea outsell new cards from Raging Tempest, but it's easy to understand why it happened. If you're an Infernoid player, expect to find more resistance in tournaments this weekend.

#9: Dragoncaller Magician

Falling from Number 5 over the weekend, Dragoncaller Magician still doesn't make a lot of sense as a Top 10 card right now. I doubt it'll be here by Monday's Market Watch, and I'm still unclear why it's here to begin with.

#8: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

The second card in our Top 10 countdown not from Raging Tempest, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber played a big role this weekend as a three-of staple in Kaiju Zoodiacs, an early frontrunner for the most popular Zoodiac variant we'll see over the coming weeks.

Not only is Slumber an improved Dark Hole in almost every way, but it's actually part of simple OTK plays that a lot of duelists got uncomfortably familiar with this past weekend. The ability to clear the field and place up to 3300 ATK on the table with a single card is nuts. It's in fact so good, that we started to see decks like ABC-Dragon Buster topping with Kaiju engines as well.

Interrupted Kaiju Slumber's been on our Top 10's several times since the beginning of the year, and it was largely in anticipation of the current era. Supply is still deep in the TCGplayer Marketplace, but the card's already back up to around $4 and could go higher if more strategies start running it.

#7: Spiritual Beast Tamer Winda

Doug wrote on the new Winda in Part 2 of his excellent Raging Tempest Set Review, highlighting the biggest strengths of a card that solves a number of challenges to a once-mighty rogue deck. Its name is its biggest asset: Winda counts as both a Ritual Beast Tamer and a Spiritual Beast, so it acts as a sort of wildcard for your Contact Fusions. That's huge; it makes your biggest combos more consistent. Add a killer recruiting effect that Special Summons Fusion Monsters for free, and you've got a serious boost for Ritual Beasts.

While I don't expect Ritual Beasts to see top table play any time soon, Spiritual Beast Tamer Winda could be a huge difference-maker if the F&L List eases up on the strategy.

#6: Windwitch – Ice Bell

Up from Number 8 over the weekend, players are clearly learning to appreciate Windwitch – Ice Bell, and its ability to Speedroid Terrortop you straight into Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon. The companion card Windwitch – Glass Bell saw a similar rise in interest: while it clocked in at Number 13 in our last Market Watch, it rose to Number 11 over the week, just narrowly missing the Top 10.

Windwitches saw some noteworthy play in the OCG, so while we didn't log any Windwitch action in the Deck Archive over the weekend, it wouldn't be surprising if Windwitches had some sort of impact at YCS Seattle.

#5: Lost Wind

A surprising sight at Number 5, Lost Wind benefits from the milling power of cards like That Grass Looks Greener and the new Foolish Burial. Goods. While it's slower than Effect Veiler and won't destroy an opposing monster, it does offer that bonus graveyard effect, effectively giving you double the value… If your game lasts long enough to use it twice.

Seems ambitious. We'll have to see if it puts in any work at YCS Seattle.

#4: Number 98: Antitopian

The third and final card to hit our Top 10 that's not from Raging Tempest, Number 98: Antitopian Top 8'd at least once last weekend: Dakota Smith ran it in his Kaiju Zoodiacs, topping the Regional Qualifier in Lubbock Texas. Smith's build was one of the most viewed Zoodiac decks to hit the internet off the weekend's Regionals, and probably garnered a lot of attention for the card in the process.

But it's sort of unclear how people are planning to use this thing. On one hand, it's a generic Rank 4 that can tech against Number 39: Utopia and Number S39: Utopia the Lightning… sort of? On the other hand, Smith ran it in his Side Deck with triple Full Force Virus, seemingly using Antitopian just as a Dark monster with 2000 DEF or more for the Virus' tribute. That's great against stuff like Zoodiacs, Speedroids, Infernoids, Metalfoes, and most of the monsters played in ABC's… really most of the field minus Frog Paleozoics.

But while demand for Number 98: Antitopian shot through the roof, sales of Full Force Virus didn't rise to match, making this a curious situation. Shout it out in the comments if you've got theories yourself.

#3: Fusion Recycling Plant

Rock solid at Number 3 once again, Fusion Recycling Plant solves some of the front-end and back-end challenges facing the Fusion Summoning mechanic, offering awesome card economy so long as you can keep it safe from chained removal. #2: Neo Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon

Popping up out of nowhere to take the Number 2 spot, Neo Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon allows for even bigger shenanigans permanently stealing monsters, by way of Number 95: Galaxy-Eyes Dark Matter Dragon and Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon. It's an interesting card to see trending, but it's on a downward price curve overall and would have to make a big showing at YCS Seattle to keep this kind of momentum.

#1: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

And finally, the Number 1 bestseller from last weekend put forth a huge repeat showing from Monday to Friday, as True King Lithosagym, the Disaster took Number 1 again!

With an effect that ruins entire strategies in one shot, and a ton of momentum moving into Maximum Crisis, it's easy to see how the Disaster remained white hot as more sellers listed more copies and the card just became even more accessible.

Past the Top 10, we saw the aforementioned Windwitch Glass Bell at Number 11. Zoodiac Ratpier dropped from Number 2 to Number 12; the highly-speculated Miscellaneousaurus and Ancient Gear Howitzer took the 13 and 14 spots; and Heavy Armored Train Ironwolf came in at Number 15.

With YCS Seattle kicking off the 2017 YCS season this weekend, we're sure to see some shakeups in the TCGplayer Marketplace Sunday night. Join us Monday to see the fallout!
