Market Watch: Link Summoning Fallout & YCS Seattle

Welcome to one of the craziest Market Watches of all time!

Raging Tempest just made its massive debut, but two other big factors warped the shape of the TCGplayer Marketplace over the weekend: YCS Seattle, which was a proving ground for Zoodiacs and Infernoids; and new rules revealed in Asia's Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG, including a new summoning mechanic, new limitations on Extra Deck monsters, and a new field set-up that changes the way the game is played.

While several top-selling cards from RATE continued to move big numbers from Friday to Monday, and one possible tech pick from Seattle made the cut, more than half of the Top 10 bestselling cards by volume sold this weekend were owed entirely to the new rule set, and the new Link Monsters. If you're not familiar with the changes that were announced, our friends over at The Organization did a great breakdown that spells it all out really well. Then check out some of the new cards from the upcoming Starter Deck to get a better idea of how the new mechanic will work.

The gist is that the new rule set restricts the use of the Extra Deck. You can use your Fusions, Synchros, Xyz, and Pendulums like normal, but instead of summoning them to one of your five monster zones – now called Main Monster Zones – you'd summon them to the new Extra Monster Zone, and each player only gets to use one Extra Monster Zone at a time.

Want to Summon more than one Extra Deck monster? You probably do. But under the new rule set, you'll need to Summon one of the new Link Monsters first. Doing so lets you make Extra Deck summons to any of the Main Monster Zones they link to, as demonstrated on each Link Monster by arrow-shaped Link Markers.

It's not really as restrictive as it looks; even in the first days of the reveal it's been quickly determined that Zoodiacs and still do Zoodiac things and that the Link Monsters are really easy to play. Many of them have impressive interactions all on their own, too. But Pendulum Summons take a hit, everything gets more complicated, and some new opportunities may be in store for old cards.

Those opportunities were the basis for a lot of the action in the TCGplayer Marketplace this weekend. With that established, let's show you what happened.

#10: Lost Wind

This card came in at Number 5 on Friday, so it's not super surprising to see it back at Number 10. At the same time though, I haven't seen it in any Top Cut lists yet from the last two weekends, and I'm still not sure it's worth the speculative hype. You can argue that it's an answer to Zoodiacs and some other common play patterns right now, sort of on the same wavelength as Forbidden Chalice and My Body as a Shield, but it's just so slow as a trap card that I can't imagine that it would see widespread use right now.

Still, it's definitely become a Marketplace darling. There could be something to it.

#9: The Agent of Creation - Venus

The first card placed into the Top 10 by Link Summons, The Agent of Creation – Venus was popularized early on by one of Jon Moore's House of Champs videos. Right now, one of the big question marks about Link Summoning is whether you can make them with Token Monsters. If you can't, then the ability to plunk four monsters on the field with Venus could be very attractive. To be specific with the limited card pool we've already seen, Venus could place multiple Link Spiders on the field to make an instant play for Missus Radiant, which we're already seeing at the centerpiece of some crazy Zoodiac plays.

But will The Agent of Creation – Venus be needed by the time Link Summoning rolls around and we see all the first wave cards debut? Will Token Monsters render Venus unnecessary? There are a lot of questions that could swerve the enthusiasm for this card, and we're not going to have answers for quite a while.

In the mean time, lots of speculators are gambling on Venus' potential anyways, and lots of players are already hoarding their copies as trade bait and possible deck fodder to dodge the boosted prices. Venus is still available for under 50 cents, but it's moving in huge numbers.

#8: Mystical Shine Ball

You can't really play The Agent of Creation – Venus without Mystical Shine Ball, and while copies are still readily available, the foil versions are definitely desirable. #7: Delta The Magnet Warrior

Clocking in at Number 4 last Monday, Delta The Magnet Warrior disappeared from the Top 10 on Friday, only to reemerge in the Number 7 position over the weekend. After the underwhelming release of new Magnet Warrior themed monsters in Structure Deck: Yugi, Delta's a big redeemer, and while it may have arrived too late to make a competitive impact that hasn't stopped duelfans from picking up tons of copies.

#6: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

The former Number 1 bestseller for two Market Watches running, True King Lithosagy continues to capture attention as both a tempting tech pick for decks that aren't really in the competitive picture right now, and as a big potential hit once Maximum Crisis gives the True Kings more purpose.

Of the cards that weren't pushed by the new rule set, or YCS Seattle, Lithosagym was the highest-selling card of the weekend. From this point forward it's all new influences.

#5: Spiritual Swords of Revealing Light

Billy Brake topped YCS Seattle with Spiritual Swords, and as we've seen before, the Billy Brake effect kicked in to drive huge demand.

I can't say with one hundred percent surety why Brake played Spiritual Swords of Revealing Light, but I imagine it matches up really well against the biggest threats going these days. Zoodiac variants are often winning with as few as three attacks these days, and the ability to give up 3000 Life Points instead of all of them seems tremendously valuable. The option to then save yourself from losing a second time is the kind of thing tournament winning dreams are made of.

Factor in higher utility thanks to cards like Foolish Burial Goods and That Grass Looks Greener, and suddenly you've got a much more viable card that fits some of the biggest strategies going. With Infernoids and perhaps surprisingly Burning Abyss both doing well in post-RATE tournaments, we could see it more frequently moving forward.

People are certainly going to be testing it now that they have their own copies.

#4: Reborn Tengu

It's not entirely clear how the Link Summon mechanic will work, but there's an expectation that you'll be able to give up one Reborn Tengu as Material for a Link Summon, and trigger its effect to Special Summon another Reborn Tengu in the process. Veteran duelists may remember similar expectations for Xyz Summoning, though that was eventually proven false, and Tengu faded into obscurity as a result.

Fast forward to today and the Tengu hype train is picking up massive speed. Both the Super Rare and Ultra Rare printings are pushing $15, with the Ultra approaching the $20 mark when it's not sold out entirely. This is the number one card speculators are hoarding in anticipation of the new rules, and again, it's totally up in the air as to whether the Gamble will pay off. Tengu could wind up occupying a unique role as a Level 4 Link enabler, or it could wind up being irrelevant to the mechanic, or we could see a future release when the mechanic debuts that simply outclasses it.

But those risks didn't slow demand, making it the Number 4 bestselling card of the weekend.

#3: Blasting Fuse

This one's even trickier. On one hand, Link Markers and the new Pendulum Scale rules will create a more structured game, where it'll be easier to predict where your opponent will place cards. That works in Blasting Fuse's favor, especially if cheap, disposable monsters on your own side of the field – cards you'd already be playing to enable Link Summons – can help you activate Blasting Fuse affordably. Some players are even hoping that with the Extra Monster Zones, they won't have to give up anything but Blasting Fuse itself to meet the four filled zones they believe are required.

On the other hand, it may turn out that Blasting Fuse is entirely irrelevant, only applying to a column of four filled zones and not five. Or that it can't even be applied to a column with five zones at all. If that's the case the card will be conditional at best and totally useless all the time at worst. But again, speculators made the Gamble.

#2: Ground Collapse

Will Ground Collapse let you demolish the Link Summon mechanic by blocking your opponent's Linked Monster Zones? Who knows! Seems like a really obvious thing Konami wouldn't let happen if they want people to buy into the new mechanic. But Ground Collapse is literally six bucks now as people bet that Konami would let that happens, so the mob has clearly spoken.

#1: Senet Switch

And finally, perhaps the biggest tossup of the bunch. Some players believe Senet Switch will let them move Link Monsters from the Extra Monster Zone to their Main Monster Zones, allowing further Link Summons and more Linked Monster Zones for Pendulums, Xyz, Synchros, and Fusions. Will it work that way? We really don't know how the term “adjacent” will be defined as it relates to this card or others, so there's no way to tell.

In addition, Senet Switch does seem vaguely similar to the current fanlation of Castle Link, the upcoming Link Monster Field Spell. If the cards are as similar as they may appear to be under certain readings, Castle Link will be much the same card, but searchable and benefiting from direct support. Senet Switch could be outclassed the moment the new rules take effect.

But that doubt didn't stop Senet Switch from being the bestselling card of the weekend, and it's now a three dollar common. It was never reprinted after it appeared in Cyber Dark Impact, and now we'll have to wait and see if the new rules make it relevant.

Beyond that, Sales of Toon Dark Magician and Red-Eyes Toon Dragon spiked as well, likely as a result of the new rule set. And we saw significant interest in Fusion Recycling Plant, Pre-Preparation of Rites, and Neptabyss, the Atlantean Prince; Mermails performed pretty well in Regionals last weekend, so we might continue to see them in competition.

That's it for today, but we'll see how things shake out over the week, as the responses to YCS Seattle and the new rules make their way to more duelists. We'll be back on Friday, where we'll see if any of the new trends have staying power, or if it'll be back to business as post-RATE usual.

See you then!
