Market Watch: Everything Fusion Enforcers

This weekend we saw the first impact of Fusion Enforcers, and in a kind of surprising move, the entire Top 10 and beyond were all cards from the new Special Booster – no Raging Tempest in sight.

If this is your first Market Watch let's do a quick recap: every Monday and Friday we count down the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace. That Top 10 is determined by the sheer number of cards sold. That's important because if the hottest cards are commons or low-value foil cards, they won't usually spike in price; the sales trends would be invisible to anyone just looking at publicly posted info.

Those sales numbers are really useful, because they let us spot new tech trends and Side Deck picks; they demonstrate when a large number of players are migrating to a particular competitive deck; and they can show you what might spike in demand in the future, as players and speculators stock up on cards in response to news about upcoming releases. They can also demonstrate declining popularity if a well-stocked card does well for several Market Watches but then falls from the salescharts.

The TCGplayer Marketplace is a great place to draw those numbers, because it's a gateway to over 1000 activate Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers. Since it lets you comparison shop for cards it's an amazing place to find great deals, and the massive number of sales that move through the Marketplace means we wind up with a ton of data. The bigger your sample size the more meaningful that data is, and we wind up with a great snapshot of current trends.

Now that you know the score let's start the countdown and look at the Top 10 this weekend, from Friday to Monday morning.

#10: Fluffal Octopus

While Fusion Enforcers introduced the new Invoked theme, Fluffals appear to have been the biggest winners from the new set. The mighty Frightfur Kraken's a huge game changer for Fluffals and it clocked in at Number 13 despite a solid price tag of four bucks. Fluffal Octopus isn't a must for new Fluffal builds, but it sold extremely well at an average market price of over $3.50.

A lot of players must be interested in giving Fluffal Octopus a shot, which might be a surprising suggestion for the shape of the Fluffal decks you'll see at your locals.

#9: Fluffal Dog

The Number 9 position for Fluffal Dog makes more sense, as it IS a must-run. While it was about $1.50 in its previous printings, Fusion Enforcers dropped it to 50 cents a pop. Anyone interested in Fluffals would've snapped it up if they didn't have their copies already.

#8: Edge Imp Sabres

That same philosophy was in action here at Number 8. While Edge Imp Sabres was previously a four-dollar card across no fewer than four printings, Fusion Enforcers made it way more affordable at a current Market Price of 75 cents as of this writing, and since it's another necessity at two to three copies, it was another big buy for Fluffal fans.

#7: Magical Meltdown

The one trace of the Invoked theme in our Top 10, Magical Meltdown is impressive at Number 7, selling a ton of copies despite a Market Price of nearly seven bucks. Searching Aleister the Invoker, protecting your Fusion Summons, and then protecting your Fusion Monsters once they hit the field, Magical Meltdown's still an affordable three-of for any Invoked deck.

This one could be seeing some speculation, too. At seven dollars, supply is still running three pages deep, but that could change pretty easily if it continues to capture player interest through the week. If that happens it could jump to ten bucks or more.

With Invoked Mechaba pushing forty dollars and Invocation nearly sixty, there are clearly a lot of players who see competitive potential in the Invoked theme, and they're willing to throw down some dueling dollars to build the deck.

#6: Fluffal Owl

A departure from the other Fluffal reprints we've discussed so far, Fluffal Owl didn't see any notable decrease in price thanks to its reprinting, as it was already widely available for under a dollar. The Owl sees variable play in competitive Fluffal builds, but its Number 6 position again suggests the kind of Fluffal decks people are going to be trying over the coming weeks. Polymerization sold even better, as you'll see in a few moments.

#5: Edge Imp Chain

Frequently played as a three-of in Fluffals, Edge Imp Chain was a cheap buy at less than 20 cents, and that ease of access combined with staple status for the theme made it a huge pick at Number 5.

Edge Imp Chain packs a ton of utility with solid ATK and not one, but two search effects; it works wonders to start and extend your combos, and with 1200 attack points it can be a solid little troublemaker all on its own when you're clearing the field with Frightfur Kraken and Frightfur Tiger.

#4: Fluffal Penguin

Vastly more important than Fluffal Octopus at Number 10, Fluffal Penguin's well deserving of the Number 4 spot. Not only does it help you fuel your Fusion Summons, thin your deck, and filter towards the cards you need to further your plays, its one-shot Special Summon ability brings a Rank 4 element to the Fluffal strategy that really didn't exist before.

Better yet, it's a Level 4 Water monster, so combined with Instant Fusion and Elder Entity Norden it brings Bahamut Shark and Toadally Awesome into the mix. That play can help set you up for a win on Turn 2 when you go first, and it makes a nice complement to the Rank 8 plays a first turn Frightfur Kraken can make, introducing Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy as another early game control option.

It also goes great with…

#3: …Toy Vendor!

Integral to the Fluffal deck's combo engine, Toy Vendor now combos with Foolish Burial Goods to become a Reinforcement of the Army for Edge Imp Sabres or any Fluffal monster. You wouldn't play Fluffals without it.

#2: Polymerization

Searchable with Fluffal Owl and recyclable with Fluffal Cat, Polymerization's a key enabler for Fluffals and benefits from the World Premiere Fusion Recycling Plant from Raging Tempest. Recycling Plant was a Market Watch staple up until this week, so we know a ton of players were probably getting ready to run it with this card.

Easily had as a Common, Polymerization was pushing three dollars in its lowest priced foil forms, and Fusion Enforcers cut that price tag in half. Players clearly responded to the chance to snag some quick shine at a discount.

#1: Instant Fusion

And finally, Instant Fusion is a $5 to $6 card no more. One of the most commonly played spells in modern competition, Instant Fusion's been a tremendous part of tournament play since the release of Elder Entity Norden, and now it can be had for less than $10 a playset.

The price drop isn't drastic, but if you're on a budget or you didn't own your copies yet and you wanted them for Fluffals, the wallet check is a welcome boon.

What else was big? Fusion Recovery can extend combos in strategies like Fluffals, especially with Frightfur Kraken in the picture, and it nearly made the Top 10 at Number 11. Aleister the Invoker came in at Number 12, and Frightfur Kraken took the Number 13 spot as mentioned before. That left King of the Swamp to take the Number 14 post, and Frightfur Fusion brought up the rear at Number 15.

How will Fusion Enforcers be received over the course of the week? OTS Championships took the place of Regional Qualifiers in North America this past weekend, so we won't have immediate, weighty information about how the new cards did in big tournaments.

Will that hinder or help the popularity of Fluffals and the Invoked? It's a toss-up for now, but we'll know more on Friday, when we return with another Top 10 Market Watch.
