Market Watch: Frogs Make a Comeback; Fluffals Still On Top

Welcome back to Market Watch!

While enthusiasm for Fluffals and Frightfurs continued in the wake of Fusion Enforcers, YCS action returned to Atlanta Georgia this weekend, and the results from that event made an immediate impact on the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

There were really no big surprises in the Marketplace this weekend, but a familiar fan-favorite is trending once again for the first time in weeks; looking at the bestselling cards of the past four days by volume, we can definitely see some sales patterns that could have immediate ramifications for competition. That's important, since North American Regionals kick off again this weekend.

Let's get right into it!

#10: Frightfur Kraken

Fluffals have been dominating our Market Watch Top 10's ever since Fusion Enforcers dropped, carrying a fan-favorite status and some notable tournament potential, as price points make all the new cards wildly accessible. The whole strategy's actually much easier to pick up these days, since lots of cards that were two or three bucks a month ago were reprinted in Fusion Enforcers and can now be had for pennies.

And while that first translated into big sales for everything but Frightfur Kraken, the new signature boss monster for the Fluffal theme's finally creeping up in the salescharts. Kraken's a pretty amazing card, combining double attacker status with a powerful removal ability that you can use multiple times per turn with cards like Frightfur Sabre-Tooth and Fusion Recovery. With 2200 ATK and an even beefier 3000 DEF its stats are great, and since it's a Level 8 it even brings the Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy into the Fluffal strategy.

Doug just showed off his latest build of Fluffals today, and Frightfur Kraken plays a starring role. Now cracking the $4 mark in Average Market Price, it could easily climb a couple bucks in the next week.

#9: Invoked Raidjin

Invoked Mechaba, Invoked Magellanica, and Invoked Raidjin appear to be seeing the most play of the Invoked Fusion Monsters, with Invoked Raidjin often being a two-of or three-of in the Invoked toolbox. While only Mechaba and Raidjin are routinely played as more than one-ofs, Mechaba's commanding a price well over 30 dollars, so Raidjin's outpacing it on sheer accessibility.

A walking Book of Moon with 2200 ATK, Raidjin's up to $3, though the huge availability of the card seems set to keep it at that price for a while yet. Invoked did crack the Top 32 at YCS Atlanta thanks to talented fan-favorite duelist Kamal Crooks, and that fact likely kept Raidjin in the Top 10 this weekend.

It is interesting that Aleister the Invoker slipped from Number 2 on Friday right off the top salescharts. We'll have to see if it reappears in our next Market Watch.

#8: Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit

While Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit's been a must-run at two and three since the release of Zoodiacs, we actually saw several Top Cut finishers from YCS Atlanta setting it aside this weekend. Championship-level players have begun to play around Ghost Ogre to the point that it's no longer effective in highly competitive metagames, and while that might not be relevant for your Regionals and locals, it meant a long list of top finishers in Atlanta skipped it entirely.

Koty Angeloff took a strong 3rd Place finish piloting Pure Zoodiacs with no Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and we saw Hanko Chow, Aaron Levy, Ian Cullen, Kamal Crooks, Jack Belter and others all make the same decision. Right now we've got twelve deck lists from the Top 32 of Atlanta logged in the Deck Archive, and two thirds of those players didn't run Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit.

So while sales remained strong through the weekend, we could be seeing the beginning of the end for Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit's recent popularity. We'll have to see how those local and Regional level metagames react to the high-competition driven forces at the YCS that caused this trend to happen.

#7: King of the Swamp

Up from the Number 10 position on Friday, King of the Swamp surged this weekend, even as the Super Rare reprint crossed the $1 mark. Players are really into Fusion stuff right now, with YCS Atlanta not really delivering many shakeups to the competitive landscape.

With Frightfur Patchwork not making the cut for Fusion Enforcers in the TCG, there's a widespread sentiment that King of the Swamp is necessary for Fluffals. Whether that opinion's accurate is up in the air, but it's been driving some really big demand.

#6: Toadally Awesome

Three Paleozoic Frog variants made the Top 32 at YCS Atlanta, including one that won the entire tournament. That threw the spotlight firmly onto Frogs Sunday night, and sent players to buy up Toadally Awesomes en masse after seeing it dip in price the past several weeks.

It's still hovering around $30, but if demand continues to soar we can expect prices to match the level of interest in the card.

#5: Fluffal Penguin

A fixture of the Top 5 since Fusion Enforcers hit shelves, Fluffal Penguin slipped a spot from Number 4 to Number 5 over the weekend, but it's still selling in huge numbers. A powerful boost to your card economy, Penguin's a Rank 4 toolbox and an enabler for key Fluffal effects, and it offers Bahamut Shark plays with Instant Fusion that bring Toadally Awesome into the mix.

It's an incredibly good card that's an excellent fit for the Fluffal strategy, and it's no surprise to see it in the Top 5 once again.

#4: Polymerization

Up from Number 7, demand spiked this week for Polymerization. It's been a hot pick for two weeks now, though it's a bit of a surprise to see it rebounding when it seemed to be on the way out. Some recent Regional finishes have sparked interest in Lunalight Black Sheep, since it's searchable with Zoodiac Broadbull, and that may be why Polymerization saw a little more action.

Our Number 3 bestseller from Friday stayed locked in the same spot over the weekend, as Fusion Substitute continued to be hugely in-demand. Is there some secret tech here? #2: Lost Wind

The new recursive trap saw a lot of sales right out of the gates when Raging Tempest launched, but it didn't put in any really noteworthy results at Regionals nor at YCS Seattle. Now we're finally starting to see some big Top Cut finishes, with players like Aaron Levy maining multiple copies in the Top 32 at YCS Atlanta.

Will Lost Wind become a staple pick in Frog Paleozoics? That remains to be seen, especially since Levy ran a 60-card Paleozoic deck that broke from a lot of competitive norms. But at least we've finally got a commanding performance to point to, legitimizing Lost Wind in big competition.

#1: Instant Fusion

And finally, Instant Fusion remains our unshakable best-seller for the third Market Watch in a row! Still holding at an average Market Price of $2.50, Instant Fusion keeps creeping into more and more Top Cut strategies, especially as 50-card and 60-card decks become more popular and players look for more high-powered cards to run in strategies that haven't run Instant Fusion much before.

Previously a $6 card or higher, Instant Fusion just keeps getting more affordable as time goes by. With Elder Entity Norden just three bucks and Sea Monster of Theseus under ten, Instant Fusion's become a wildly affordable power card.

And that's it for the weekend! YCS Atlanta decks are taking a little while to emerge, but as we see more results from that tournament we could see more fallout in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

Stay tuned for our next Market Watch on Friday, when we'll see a more comprehensive response to the YCS, a possible resurgence from Aleister the Invoker, and the long term ramifications of the YCS win on Toadally Awesome.
