Market Watch: Lost Wind, Apocrypha, and So Many Fluffals

YCS Atlanta is over, and with 22 of the Top 32 decks currently logged in the Deck Archive, players have a pretty good idea what the Top Cut at Atlanta looked like.

Pure and Kaiju Zoodiac builds took all but 10 seats in the playoff rounds, but three Paleozoic Frog decks made the Top 32, as did three Invoked variants, a Zoodiac Metalfoes deck, a Zoodiac Infernoid deck, and even a Zoodiac Shaddoll Burning Abyss build. Across those different strategies we saw some widespread trends, some of which manifested as big sales patterns in the TCGplayer Marketplace the past four days.

Beyond that, Fluffal cards were even more popular than they were in previous weeks, and the YCS success of Aleister the Invoker drove continued interested in the Invoked theme.

So let's count it down. With over 1000 active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers in the TCGplayer Marketplace, these were the Top 10 bestselling cards by sheer number of copies sold, from Monday to Friday morning.

#10: Forbidden Apocrypha

Half of the Top 8 at YCS Atlanta Side Decked Forbidden Apocrypha, after it saw widespread use for several weeks in European Regional Qualifiers. Halting Zoodiacs in their tracks, Apocrypha has the luxury of “sending” monsters to the graveyard instead of destroying them, giving it boosted utility over other removal.

On paper, it's an awesome looking card and I'm sure it'll see more play moving forward.

But in post-event remarks from YCS Atlanta, most competitors who played it to Top 32 finishes and beyond seemed to pan the card, saying they wouldn't play it again. You can expect to see it in your metagames, but it's not as high in utility as it might look. Learn to play against it, and you could wind up having an edge in the coming weeks.

#9: Invoked Elysium

While Invoked Raidjin was a huge seller over the weekend, Invoked Elysium and Invoked Cocytus caught up after seeing more play than expected at YCS Atlanta; they made Number 9 and Number 15 respectively.

While a lot of Invoked players are running just three Fusions with their Invocation engine - Invoked Mechaba, Invoked Raidjin, and Invoked Magellanica – duelists are clearly branching out. The Invoked Artifact Windwitch deck runs a particularly deep toolbox of Fusions, as demonstrated by Top 16 YCS finisher Mike Zimmitti. That deck runs as many as ten or more Fusion Monsters, since it needs minimal Xyz and Synchro lineups.

#8: Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon

The marquee Blue-Eyes boss monster made a surprise comeback in the TCGplayer Marketplace this week, outpacing stuff like Interrupted Kaiju Slumber and Lonefire Blossom (the latter saw a bit of a spike in demand with Baobaboon just around the corner in Raging Tempest Special Edition).

#7: Edge Imp Sabres

Fluffal cards continued to sell strongly despite the deck seeing zero success at YCS Atlanta. As a must-run, Edge Imp Sabres used to be a solid $3 card, but its reprinting in Fusion Enforcers knocked it down to under 50 cents. At this point the heavy buys on Fluffal cards may be largely speculative, as players await the future release of Frightfur Patchwork.

#6: Droll & Lock Bird

The advent of upcoming releases in Maximum Crises combined with a handful of other factors this week to drive big traffic on Droll & Lock Bird, including some actual sellout situations on the OTS Tournament Pack 1 Super Rare version. The Starstrike Blast Rare is still widely available, but those Super Rares are getting scarce, and that version's on an upward Price Trend the past week.

#5: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

A staple of our Market Watch Top 10's since its debut in Raging Tempest, Kelly Locke wrote an entire article on True King Lithosagym, the Disaster this week, explaining its popularity and potential; the factors holding it back in current competition; and ways it could see play in present tournaments.

After a bit of a dip, it appears players are counting down the days to Maximum Crisis once again, because demand was up for True King Bahrastos, the Fathomer too. It narrowly missed the Top 10 this week and finished at Number 11, way up from where it was in weeks past.

#4: Instant Fusion

Slipping a bit from its recent Number 1 finishes, Instant Fusion is still a strong seller here on TCGPlayer, even as some players start Fusion Summoning Elder Entity Norden legitimately with the Lunalight Black Sheep into Fusion Substitute combo instead.

The Instant Fusion reprint remains affordable at below $3 – about half of what the card used to cost as a common – and the original version from Cyberdark Impact has plunged to nearly the same price point. It seems like weeks of high sales have simply filled the tremendous demand we were seeing through late February, and into the beginning of March.

#3: Frightfur Fusion

More Fluffal speculation waiting on Frightfur Patchwork? Frightfur Fusion is not a fixture of many Fluffal decks, though some people run one copy and other swear by it in multiples. But regardless it seems players are filling in the gaps in their Fluffal arsenals: Frightfur Fusion hasn't seen a Top 10 sales finish until now, and only barely scraped the Top 20 once, in the week of Fusion Enforcers' releases.

The card has seen a bit of logged play in successful OCG decks the past month, as you can see over in the OCG Weekly deck updates from our friends over at The Organization, but it's still an infrequent one-of at best. Interesting to see it surge so much here in the TCG this week.

#2: Frightfur Sheep

The highest-selling Fluffal card this week, Frightfur Sheep isn't the flashiest of the Frightfur Fusions, but it IS a workhorse, and can supplement a weaker hand or help extend a combo.

Fluffals were huge this week, even bigger than they were before YCS Atlanta, with Frightfur Wolf at Number 12 on the sales charts, Polymerization at Number 13, and Fluffal Wings, Fluffal Penguin, Frightfur Kraken, and Fluffal Owl clocking in at Numbers 16, 17, 18, and 20 respectively.

It's really nuts, and it's seemingly the end product of both speculation on Frightfur Patchwork, as well as a groundswell of grassroots fandom. Whenever we write on Fluffals here at TCGplayer those articles see massive readership. Search Youtube for the word “Fluffal”, and you see a huge number of recent content largely aimed at casual duelists.

People can't enough of the fluff', and that enthusiasm continues to feed massive sales.

#1: Lost Wind

But sales didn't get more massive than this! Lost Wind was played in all three of the Top 32 Paleozoic Frog decks: Ryan Pasnik played one copy in the Top 8, while both Aaron Levy in the Top 16, and the eventual 1st Place finisher both ran a full playset each. With more and more competitors looking for some sort of answer to Zoodiacs, Paleozoic Frogs have become the most promising safeharbor. And suddenly Lost Wind is a must-run for the strategy.

Lost Wind caught a lot of players off guard at YCS Atlanta. Since it alters ATK you can activate it in the damage step; that's a perfect fit with a set Dupe Frog, dishing out 2000 damage and opening a path to more damage later. The effect is permanent too, a fact many players weren't aware of, leading to misplays in some big on-stream matches.

As a non-foil Rare Lost Wind is wildly accessible, and even as demand surges off the YCS win it's still selling at an Average Market Price of under $2.50. The card saw strong sales for several weeks on and off as players tried to figure out where exactly to play it. Now that it has a home, demand has exploded and we're sure to see more of it in upcoming tournaments.
