Market Watch: More Link Summoning Impact

This week, more big shakeups in the TCGplayer Marketplace!

The latest issue of Weekly Jump answered some big questions about the new Link Summoning Mechanic: Extra Deck monsters revived from the graveyard return to the Main Monster Zones, not the new Extra Deck Zone; when you're taking control of an opposing monster in an Extra Deck Zone, it goes to your Main Monster Zone, then back to your opponent's Main Monster Zone if control reverts. And most importantly of all, Trap Monsters and Token Monsters can be used as Link Summon Materials.

That last one's a doozy. For several weeks now, players have speculated about the sheer level of craziness possible if it turned out you could use Token Monsters for Link Summons. It seemed unlikely that would be the case, but here we are, and now every card that Special Summons Tokens is suddenly a hot prospect for competition.

…And a hot prospect in the TCGplayer Marketplace, too. At least three cards in the Top 10 from Monday to today sold so well entirely because of the anticipation for Link Summoning combos.

Beyond that we saw continued interest in top sellers from the weekend, as well as a couple new surprises that are a bit of a mystery. Without further ado, let's count down the Top 10 bestselling cards by copies sold, this week in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

#10: Fluffal Wings

The only surviving trace of the Fluffal enthusiasm we've seen since the release of Fusion Enforcers, Fluffal Wings made the Top 10 in what may be the last hurrah for Fluffals. Will they be back in higher positions in the Top 10 once the Link Summoning Token hype dies down? Subtext question: WILL the Link Summoning hype die down?

Ever.

We'll get some idea of that on Monday in our next Market Watch, but for now it's up in the air.

#9: Absolute King Back Jack

Up from Number 10 over the weekend, Absolute King Back Jack recently featured in at least two Regional Top 8 Chain Burn decks, getting Burn players closer to their most powerful cards and creating synergies with cards like Balance of Judgment. While we'd seen that technique used recently in Sweden, it was a breakthrough showing at the latest Kansas Regional Qualifier that's really brought Back Jack into vogue.

Supply remains deep and the card's still widely accessible, but the high sales numbers suggest we might see more Chain Burn in tournaments this weekend and beyond.

Otherwise, send it to the Graveyard. That Set card can be activated during this turn. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can look at 3 cards from the top of your Deck, then place them on the top of the Deck in any order. You can only use each effect of "Absolute King Back Jack" once per turn.

#8: Number 19: Freezadon

I feel like I'm missing something here. Freezadon's an awkward Rank 5 that's seen just a little play in the OCG lately, chiefly in True Draco variants like True Draco Monarchs and True Draco Artifacts. But was that the driving force pushing Number 19: Freezadon into the Number 8 position this week? It feels like I'm missing a piece of the puzzle here. Shout it out in the comments if you know what's up.

Edit: Oop! Doug with the save on this one: Freezadon's carrying some heat this week because you can overlay it with the upcoming Full Armored Crystazero Lancer, just revealed to be in the upcoming Duelist Saga. Thanks Doug!

#7: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

Down from Number 5 on Monday, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber is still seeing a surge of popularity. Demand was driven over the weekend by a ruling at YCS Atlanta, where it was stated that Slumber could Special Summon Anti-Kaiju War Machine Mecha-Dogoran despite it not being a “Kaiju” monster in the OCG.

But that buyer interest was sustained throughout the week, likely in part because the low presence of Kaijus in the YCS Atlanta Top Cut has encouraged a lot of players to return to the Kaijus in an effort to make wins off the theme's higher power ceiling as a splashed suite. The result of those two push-factors was another big finish at Number 7.

#5: Instant Fusion

Slipping from Number 2 on Monday, Instant Fusion continues to move in droves as more and more Zoodiac players begin running the Lunalight Black Sheep and Fusion Substitute combo, leveraging that Elder Entity Norden in their Extra Deck into more than just Substitute plays by maining Instant Fusion as well.

No surprise there, as Instant Fusion was one of the biggest sellers from Fusion Enforcers out of the gates before a hot new combo made it even easier to rationalize playing. Instant Fusion is fast becoming the Pre-Preparation of Rites of 2017.

#4: Phantom Skyblaster

And here come the pretzels. With Token Monsters now sitting at the forefront of every speculator's priority list, Phantom Skyblaster rocketed out of obscurity into the Number 4 Position. We've seen Skyblaster in Top Cut lists several times in the distant past, largely played with Destiny HERO – Plasma back when it was a relevant card.

It's a perfectly sensible pick for the Link Summoning era, though I still feel like we'll see newer, better cards released that trump older cards for the purpose of Link Summoning. If Konami didn't release better cards they'd be missing out on an obvious opportunity, while doing newer players a disservice by creating a barrier to the new mechanic.

#3: Scapegoat

If you're gonna use Tokens for Link Summoning, Scapegoat's definitely one of the best bets going. Capable of blocking your opponent's aggression for a complete turn, it can shield you from attacks and then offer immediate fodder for Link Monsters. There's no real mystery here: Scapegoat's the most-played Token Monster card in the history of the game, and it's almost surprising to see it at Number 3 instead of Number 1.

#2: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

A staple of our Top 10's since Raging Tempest dropped, the numbers on True King Lithosagym, the Disaster just seem to be getting stronger and stronger as we get closer to Maximum Crisis, and with it the full release of the True Draco theme. Lithosagym disappeared from the Market Watch countdown on Monday, but surged again over the course of the week, and is now riding a slightly rising Price Trend with an average Market Price over two bucks.

Supply seems to finally be drying up, so we might see some big movement on this card in the next ten days or so.

#1: Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow

And finally, no card benefited from the Link Summoning news like Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow, selling bajillions of copies overnight in the wake of the Weekly Jump announcement… just in time for an early leak of V JUMP to reveal that Gofu's going to 1-per-deck in the OCG.

While Phantom Skyblaster and Scapegoat will remain unlimited on the next OCG F&L List, Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow is apparently Limited. And while it'll certainly become a powerful card under the new rules, the giant spike in sales will probably be shortlived now that the card's gone to one. Selling at an average Market Price of just over 50 cents the past week, it's now sitting at a price of about two bucks, but as a Common that will likely see a fast restock that price doesn't seem likely to hold.

And that's it! The big Link Summoning clarification was really the driving force this week, but the weekend will bring new decks and new innovations from YCS Prague, kicking off tomorrow, as well as the Ultimatde Duelist Series Invitational in Las Vegas.

By Monday we could see a very different Top 10 in the TCGplayer Marketplace, so don't miss it!
