Market Watch: Slumber, Fusions, and Baobaboon

Welcome back, to another Monday Market Watch!

It turned out that this was the final Market Watch update we'd be bringing you before the announcement of the new F&L List, so that makes the information in the weekend's sales data kind of interesting. Not only can we see how players reacted to push-factors like YCS Prague, YCS Guatemala, and the release of Baobaboon, but we can frame that information in a different context moving forward.

If you're new to Market Watch, here's the skinny: every Monday and Friday we count down the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace, which is a giant gateway to over 1000 active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers. Because TCGplayer's such an amazing tool for comparison shopping, it draws a ton of sales and generates a ton of data in the process.

And since we do our Top 10 countdown based entirely on sales volume – not just price spikes or card rarity – we can see when hundreds of players are reacting to incoming products, overseas news, or migrating to new strategies as evidenced by hundreds or thousands of staple commons being moved. It's a perspective you can't get anywhere else, and it can be really valuable in determining the direction of both the secondary market, and the competitive scene.

So what did we see in the final days before the F&L List was revealed? Ten cards really stood above the rest this time around, and we're going to tell you which.

#10: Return of the Dragon Lords

We've seen some enthusiasm lately for Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and the reason's a bit of a mystery. Key cards were breaking in and out of the Top 10 on occasion over the past few weeks, but it wasn't until just recently that it started appearing in OCG tournaments again. A number of speculative perspectives are likely the driving force, but none of them seem hugely compelling.

Despite that, Return of the Dragon Lords isn't the only Blue-Eyes White Dragon card we'll see in this week's Top 10.

#9: Fusion Recycling Plant

A hot pick sice its World Premier debut, Fusion Recycling Plant continues to be an enticing card in the wake of Fusion Enforcers, especially with a lot of fairly random new Fusion cards waiting in the wings. The Machine Reactor Structure Deck is less than a month from its April 14th release, and that could also be driving the fluctuating interest.

While there are some consensuses already being formed about the new format starting next Friday, the role of trap cards is up in the air and so is the potential popularity of backrow removal in Game 1. The status of cards like Twin Twisters, Cosmic Cyclone, and Mystical Space Typhoon will in large part determine how effective this card might be moving into the coming weeks. So far we've never seen it in competition, and Fusion decks that might run it – key word being “might” – haven't delivered in competition, and don't seem to get much of a boost out of the new F&L List.

#8: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

While the new F&L List knocks Slumber to two-per-deck, plenty of duelists were already running just two copies with three or four Kaiju monsters to begin with. Interrupted Kaiju Slumber is so powerful as both a problem-solver and OTK enabler that it's possible it should've been handled more harshly. But while it's still only Semi-Limited, we can probably expect to see continued tournament success, and continued buyer demand.

#7: Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon

While Pendulum Summoning takes a bit of a hit in the new Advanced Format with the loss of Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin, Paleozoic Frogs and Infernoids got off virtually scott-free. They'll be impacted by several factors on a tertiary basis, but there's a very good chance that either strategy could become the new deck-to-beat over dedicated variants of Zoodiacs.

That makes the graveyard negation effect o Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon tempting, while the entire theme remains potentially promising for the Link Summon era. That may be why we're seeing such demand for Blue-Eyes White Dragon cards, moreso than upcoming releases, which seem debatable at best.

#6: Fluffal Wings

One of the only key Fluffal monsters that didn't get a reprint in Fusion Enforcers, Fluffal Wings is a likely three-of for both hardcore Fluffal builds, and anything that's just splashing Fluffals as a draw engine. That lack of a reprint has sent players to the secondary market grabbing their copies while they're still hugely affordable.

#5: Lunalight Black Sheep

Now a regular feature in Kaiju and Pure Zoodiacs along with Fusion Substitute and Elder Entity Norden, Lunalight Black Sheep even started appearing in other strategies over the past weekend: Nelson Catuiza topped the Houston Regional playing it in a 42-card Zoodiac Infernoid deck, while Joseph Haslitt played it in his 60-card build topping the Fargo North Dakota Regional.

The minimal deck lists we have show it being played at YCS Guatemala, and it was all over the place at YCS Prague, including Simone Falanga's Zoodiac Metalfoes in the Top 32. One can only imagine that Black Sheep will become even more important in the new Advanced Format, helping to extend those now-less-explosive Zoodiac plays.

#4: Lost Wind

Paleozoic Frogs won YCS Prague and YCS Atlanta, and both builds ran triple Lost Wind, locking it in as a staple for the strategy. Meanwhile YCS Guatemala was won with Zoodiac Infernoids, which can also run one or more copies of Lost Wind as an optional tech pick. On an upward Price Trend and an average Market Price of more than $2.25 at the time of writing, Lost Wind is only going to get more and more popular, as players migrate to Paleozoics and Infernoids in the wake of the new F&L List.

#3: Instant Fusion

Still huge! Instant Fusion surged over the weekend, in part because more players are flocking to Lunalight Black Sheep and Fusion Substitute. The big impact to Zoodiacs in the new Advanced Format is going to be a tougher time finding that extra Xyz Material to make a big two-Xyz play, and Instant Fusion gets the job done admirably.

Expect to see it become a must-run in Zoodiacs after flirting with staple status for weeks, and expect to see demand remain high as the price remains around the three dollar mark for both the Fusion Enforcers Super Rare, and the original common from Cyberdark Impact.

#1: Baobaboon!

Finally arriving in the Raging Tempest: Special Edition, Baobaboon is a huge enabler for M-X-Saber Invoker, comboing with anything that can destroy it to unleash Zoodiac Ratpier. It's been most popular in the OCG in Metalfoes, since they can destroy it so easily, and we saw that technique make Top Cut appearances in both YCS Prague and YCS Guatemala; it actually took third place in Guatemala City in the capable hands of veteran duelist Joaquin Rinaldo Petroni, making an immediate impact.

But is it enough? With Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin Forbidden on March 31st and Majespecter Raccoon – Bunbuku relatively useless without it, a lot of players are shying away from Metalfoes. Can Baobaboon save the strategy? Its impact is slightly restricted by the Semi-Limiting of Zoodiac Ratpier too, layering on multiple factors of doubt. We'll have to see how the strategy adapts, and where Baobaboon might be played moving forward.
