Market Watch: The New Formatís First Impact

The new format has arrived!

...Almost.

While the Advanced Format won't take effect for another week, the reveal of the new F&L List on Tuesday has already swerved the TCGplayer Marketplace. Three of the Top 5 bestselling cards this week were previously Forbidden, and will be released into tournament play once again with new erratas. Meanwhile the majority of the remaining cards in the Top 10 were likely placed where they were due to the general impact of the new list: the market's a bit bearish on Zoodiacs, but players are bullish on Infernoids and even more enthusiastic about Paleozoics.

As always, our Friday Market Watch looks at the Top 10 top cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace from Monday morning to today, as determined by sheer copies sold. Rarity and price have nothing to do with the information we're presenting, though you will often see the biggest movers and shakers spiking in price. Early sales data can be especially powerful right before a new format as many players switch up their decks, so let's get into it.

#10: Lost Wind

Paleozoic Frogs made it through the new F&L List basically unscathed, and while continued demand for Lost Wind may look like the only response to that, a ton of cards for the deck actually saw big sales this week: Paleozoic Marrella and Absolute King Back Jack narrowly missed the Top 10 at Number 11 and Number 12 respectively.

Meanwhile Toadally Awesome was the 15th bestselling card this week, and climbed all the way to $50. It's settled on a downward price trend for the moment, but supply is low in the TCGplayer Marketplace and we could easily see it hit the sixty dollar mark by the end of the weekend.

If there was any question of whether Paleozoic Frogs were going to gain momentum heading into the next format, I think the sales patterns this week smother those doubts.

#9: Speedroid Terrortop

Since Speedroid Terrortop's been Limited for months in the OCG, and has seen play as a three-of staple in lots of strategies stateside, there was some expectation that it would be restricted on our new F&L List. Now that we know it's staying at three-per-deck, plenty of players holding off on buying their playset have finally taken the plunge.

It's unlikely we'll see big changes if any before World Championship Qualifiers, and that makes Terrortop a safe bet.

#8: Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier

Back with a slightly tweaked effect that kills all the loop combos that got Brionac Forbidden in the first place, the ubiquitous Level 6 Synchro is now back in competition. A lot has changed since Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier was last legal, and very few strategies can play it in current competition. While I don't personally expect to see it make much of an impact, it was a hot buy for speculators and hopeful duelists this week.

#7: Instant Fusion

With Zoodiac Ratpier now Semi-Limited, Instant Fusion goes from being a good idea for Zoodiac decks to an absolute must-run in dedicated Zoo builds. Any card that fields another Level 4 Xyz Material effectively makes up for the loss of the deck's third Ratpier, and Instant Fusion's one of the best ways to fill that need. Combined with the card's use in conjunction with Lunalight Black Sheep and Fusion Substitute, it's probably fair to consider it a staple for Zoodiacs moving forward.

Meanwhile it's pretty great in a ton of other strategies too, as virtually any Rank 4 strategy can benefit from Elder Entity Norden. Instant Fusion's been a hit since its reprint in Fusion Enforcers cut its price tag in half, and it seems like players get more and more reasons to pick up their copies with each passing week.

#6: Wisdom-Eye Magician

Now back at two-per-deck, I don't think Wisdom-Eye Magician is going to revolutionize Pendulum Summoning strategies in major competition; I think the Forbidden status of Majespecter Unicorn Ė Kirin could be the last nail in the mechanic's competitive coffin for the summer. But it looks as if a vast number of players are betting the other way, and the result was massive sales for Wisdom-Eye.

Don't be surprised to see some Pendulum Magician variants cropping up in your metagames over the coming weeks. People are picking up the cards, and it's likely more for play than speculation and investment. Pendulum Evolution is still a long ways off, launching at the end of June.

#5: That Grass Looks Greener

Paleozoics and Infernoids are both really strong moving into the next format, and both used That Grass Looks Greener at YCS Prague, including Jawad Chowdhury in 4th Place, runner-up Billy Brake, and eventual Champion Joshua Schmidt.

While Greener was on a downward price trend heading into the week, it's now sitting at a lowest available price of over $26, up from its average Market Price of $21. Since it serves two decks at once Ė both of which dodged the F&L List Ė I'd expect the climb to continue over the weekend.

#4: Sangan

Hey everybody! Sangan's back! And he's a slow-moving gimped version of himself!

Loss of speed acknowledged, Sangan remains a powerful card in its new errata'd form. While it was once an abusable, reusable little jerk that could search anything to set up immediate plays, it now suits a more specific role in upcoming competition. As Kelly noted in his F&L List response article, Sangan's new restrictions make it a great tool for searching hand traps, and it could be tremendously useful once Link Summoning hits the TCG.

With immediate uses, a ton of promise with upcoming mechanics, and a legacy of fuzzy terror backing its reputation, Sangan was an easy call as a Top 10 finisher this week.

#3: Rescue Cat

Perhaps less predictable, Rescue Cat beat out Sangan for the Number 3 spot. It's actually my all-time favorite card, but even I can recognize that the new errata makes Rescue Cat into a much more narrow card, largely reducing it to just another Rank 3 enabler. That said Rank 3 enablers are very good, and there is more support for the Rescue Animal theme coming down the pipe, so maybe this one does make sense.

Or maybe we all just love Rescue Cat.

#2: Imperial Order

No surprise here: Imperial Order is almost indisputably the most powerful of the newly-errata'd cards returning to competition, offering the kind of effect that creates one-sided games your opponent never has a chance to win. I'd prefer a competitive environment where those kinds of cards don't exist; while Imperial Order's cost has effectively doubled, it still benefits from Dimensional Barrier Syndrome, since often just one turn of immobility can cost your opponent the duel. But those cards remain a very real part of the game, and I feel like Imperial Order kind of replaced Vanity's Emptiness on its way out the door.

Imperial Order flew off the Marketplace shelves and sellers rushed to fill the supply, keeping the price of the card relatively stable across its three printings. Check out each listing in the Marketplace and you'll see the Price Trends were largely flat. But supply of Near Mint copies is drying up, and while there are pages of Played and Damaged Imperial Orders available, those are a Gamble in tournament competition where such cards could easily be ruled as Marked under the official tournament protocols.

It's doubtful the demand for Imperial Order is going to dry up over the weekend, but the actual number of cards that are going to be getting dug out of trade binders and old collections is unclear. It'll probably become more expensive in the coming days but it's a bit of a tossup.

#1: Lonefire Blossom

And finally, after taking the Number 2 spot on Monday, Lonefire Blossom captured the Number 1 spot! Baobaboon fell all the way to Number 14, but the key enabler that brings it into play surged, outselling every other card in the TCGplayer Marketplace this week.

The reason for that is unclear, but it was likely a mix of three factors, Baobaboon being the first. Beyond that, Predaplant decks have logged a few strong showings in recent OCG tournaments, and a Link Summoning combo video from repeat Champion and fan-favorite star duelist Jeff Jones garnered a lot of attention. That combo ends with a field of Naturia Beast, Honeybot to protect it, and three copies of Firewall Dragon. It starts with just two cards: Rescue Ferret or Urgent Emergency Asssistance Rescue to search it, and a Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio or Lonefire Blossom to get that. It's pretty ridiculous.

Were there other factors spiking demand for Lonefire Blossom? If you have your own theories, shout Ďem out down in the Comments!
