Market Watch: True Kings, Metalfoes, and More

This weekend we saw the final Regional Qualifiers of the current format, which draws to a close this Friday. What were the biggest sellers to finish out the current F&L List?

We'll show you, today in Market Watch.

Last week's Top 10 was guided by three big factors: the release of the long-awaited Baobaboon; the reintroduction of soon-to-be-errata'd cards, freed from the Forbidden List; and heightened interest in Paleozoic Frogs and Infernoids, which appear to be trending heading into the new format.

Over the weekend we saw continued interest in Baobaboon and some different responses to the new format, as well as a few surprises. As always, this week's Top 10 will be a function of overall sales volume: we're counting down the cards that sold the most copies from Friday to this morning, regardless of price or rarity.

That's especially valuable this week, as we see a number of low rarity tech picks trending again; cards that wouldn't make a notable impression if we were looking for price spikes alone. In addition, some forward-thinking purchases were clearly being made as duelists look ahead to both Maximum Crisis, and the advent of the Link Summoning mechanic.

With all that in mind, let's look at the Top 10 bestselling cards from the weekend, from over 1000 active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

#10: Forbidden Chalice

After jockeying for position with My Body as a Shield as the Zoodiac tech pick of choice, Forbidden Chalice emerged as the clear winner at YCS Seattle. That dominance waned a bit through YCS Atlanta, Prague, and Guatemala as Shield made a comeback in all three events, but demand surged for Chalice this past weekend.

The new Advanced Format isn't set to cause any tremendous shakeups right off the bat, so this coming weekend you can expect to see Chalice in all the places you've been seeing it for the past month and a half.

#9: Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow

The first big surprise in this week's Top 10 Countdown, Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow sold in droves when we first learned that Token Monsters could be used as Link Summon Materials… and then it crashed two days later when the OCG Limited Gofu.

So why was it back this weekend, selling by the barrel here in the TCG? Maybe it's the solid showing from Zoodiac Metalfoes lately: the strategy's finishing out the format strong, and anyone continuing to play it may need more than just Baobaboon to fill the void of Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin. Or maybe there's some expectation that if the TCG didn't Limit Gofu on the latest list, we won't see it Limited before Link Summoning arrives?

That last guess might seem a bit far-fetched, but the more you break it down the more reasonable it sounds. Link Summoning will change the game far more than Synchros and Xyz ever did, and it raises the complexity of the game in ways that might scare some players off. The mechanic needs to be accepted as soon as it drops, and making it powerful is the classic way to accomplish that. Just make Link Summoning so good that players can't ignore it.

Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow's only been printed in The Dark Illusion so far, and that drew speculators like moths to a flame. The card's virtually sold out now, up several dollars from its previous Market Price of 63 cents just a few days ago.

#8: Lonefire Blossom

Interest in Lonefire Blossom was so strong last week that it was the Number 1 bestseller in the TCGplayer Marketplace, and we discussed a lot of different reasons for that since Baobaboon didn't make the Top 10. Now, with Baobaboon surging once again, it seems obvious that Lonefire's following in its footsteps.

Metalfoes have done better than expected the past two weeks, both in tournaments and in the TCGplayer Marketplace. Despite the loss of Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin, I think we can expect to see them continue on as a very popular tournament deck in the coming weeks. Whether or not that'll last is up in the air, but the player enthusiasm is clearly there.

#7: Fusion Substitute

The Lunalight Black Sheep combo remains a new staple for Zoodiac builds and a potential option for other decks like Infernoids and Shaddolls, too. And even though the combo only needs one copy of Substitute, enough players are still buying in that it dinged the Number 7 spot. That's may be indicative of just how many people are still going to play Zoodiacs in the new format.

#6: Morphtronic Smartfon

I have no idea why Morphtronic Smartfon is suddenly one of the bestselling cards in the game. Even as a Level 1 Earth Machine Tuner that's compatible with Machine Duplication, it's nowhere near unique; several other monsters fill those same niches. Nobody I've asked seems to have a clear answer either, so for now, this one's a mystery.

#5: Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon

Speaking of mysteries, Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon's held its place in the Top 10 once again. Negating graveyard effects is definitely valuable, but Blue-Eyes White Dragon decks haven't seen top table time in weeks, and they're a poor fit for competition right now. How Spirit Dragon's hung in there is difficult to put a finger on.

#4: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

Kaiju took a bit of a hit in popularity in the fallout of Slumber's Semi-Limiting, but it seems like everyone realized the engine works pretty well with just two Slumbers anyways, as the card came roaring back this weekend. Its popularity has proven to be cyclical, and it was really big in the logged Regional Qualifiers we've seen so far from the latest weekend. No surprise to see it back at Number 4.

#3: Baobaboon

Speaking of grand returns, Baobaboon had a big weekend as lots of players picked up their copies. Though it fell off the salescharts last week, it came back with a vengeance over the last three days, and as noted before it seems like Metalfoes are heading into the next format in a stronger position than most expected.

Personally I wouldn't have been shocked if Metalfoes fell off the radar entirely. But it seems as if lots of players are committing to the deck's latest addition, indicating they're going to stick with the strategy. Expect to see Metalfoes in your tournaments next weekend.

#2: Instant Fusion

A lot of different factors have contributed to Instant Fusion's popularity in the Marketplace. First it was the card's reprinting in Fusion Enforcers and subsequent dip in price, making it more accessible. Then it was the adoption of the Lunalight Black Sheep combo, which requires Elder Entity Norden in the Extra Deck and makes Instant Fusion that much easier to run, so why not tech an Instant Fusion. And then it was the Semi-Limiting of Zoodiac Ratpier, which made Level 4 Xyz Materials that much more important for any deck that still planned to run Zoodiacs.

Are there additional factors now? Does anticipation for the Rank 4-heavy Dinosmasher's Fury deck play a part? A lot of new Dinosaur decks are running it, so it's definitely possible.

#1: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

Speaking of cards Dinosaur decks are running, the revitalized theme may finally give True King Lithosagym, the Disaster a competitive home. Lithosagym's been a hot buy since it debuted, but there really hasn't been any real competitive use for it yet. That said, you can click over to our friends at The Organization and see that it's a three-of in Dinosaur decks overseas thanks to Dinosmasher's Fury. Jon Moore recently posted a build of Dinosaurs on his House of Champs channel as well, which ran three copies as well.

That combined Dinosaur-hype has players enthused about a card that was already seeing plenty of speculation, and Lithosagym is now on a slightly upward Price Trend as a result.

There were some other big standouts over the weekend too. Grisaille Prison's seen discussion lately for its catch-all answer to Extra Deck threats, and it nearly hit the Top 10, clocking in at Number 11. Lost Wind remained popular at Number 12 and Fluffal Wings took lucky Number 13. Paleozoics continued to see enthusiasm with Paleozoic Olenoides at Number 14 and Paleozoic Dinomischus at 16, while D/D Swirl Slime was the 15th bestselling cards of the weekend, and Kaju buzz extended all the way to The Kaiju Files at Number 17, which is surprising.

That's it for this week, but join us Friday when competition rolls into the new Advanced Format, and we see the next round of developments in the TCGplayer Marketplace. As the new format kicks off it's going to be even more valuable to stay ahead of the trends, and we'll have more observations that'll let you do just that.

See you Friday!
