Market Watch: YCS Denver and Maximum Crisis Leaks

Some big news swerved the action in the TCGplayer Marketplace this weekend!

Heading into Friday it was expected that YCS Denver would be the biggest guiding factor in the secondary market; Denver saw some big successes for Infernoids and Zoodiacs, a bit of a stumble for Paleozoic Frogs, and a massive comeback for Metalfoes after weak results in Regional Qualifiers.

But a surprising series of leaks stole the show and threw the Marketplace for a loop, when Super Rares from Maximum Crisis were found in a select few boxes of Official Tournament Pack 4. The entire spread of Super Rares from the set is now known you can read the list and see pics over at The Organization including OCG imports and two new World Premiere cards.

Those two World Premiere cards were SPYRAL Sleeper and Subterror Fiendess, kicking off a buying frenzy for everything SPYRAL and Subterror. Combined with the impact of YCS Denver, we have a tremendously fresh Top 10 list of bestselling cards to kick off our week.

#10: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

Kaijus continued to be a big factor at YCS Denver, as players experiment with different combinations ranging from simple 1-Slumber suites with two Kaiju monsters, all the way up to two Slumbers with four Kaiju.

No matter how you play them, the Kaiju cards are strong problem-solvers at worst and OTK enablers at best, combining in different ways to build synergies with stuff like Toadally Awesome, or beat niche cards like Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds. The Kaiju toolbox runs deep.

During your Main Phase, except the turn this card was sent to the Graveyard: You can banish this card from your Graveyard; add 1 "Kaiju" monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only activate 1 "Interrupted Kaiju Slumber" per turn.

#9: SPYGAL Misty

Despite the fact that she's not a SPYRAL monster, SPYGAL Misty's proven to be one of the most valuable members of the SPYRAL team, featuring in every Top Cut build we've seen since her debut. With free card economy, an effect that sets up SPYRAL Super Agent and SPYRAL Tough, and a killer Majespecter Unicorn - Kirin impression, Misty's a solve-it-all card for a deck that desperately needed flexibility.

While SPYGAL Misty can't feed SPYRAL Sleeper's Special Summon, you just can't ignore her combo potential with other key monsters. That fact combined with an average Market Price under a dollar made Misty a huge buy over the weekend.

#8: Shiranui Solitaire

Zombie Lightsworn decks have sat at the outer edges of competition for months now, but they've been doing especially well in Regionals over the past four weeks, and Top 32 showings at YCS Denver appears to have pushed them over the edge. Vishon Bhatia drew a ton of attention to the strategy, two more Zombie Lightsworn players made the Top 32, and the announcement of a long-awaited Minerva, the Exalted Lightsworn reprint in July's Battles of Legend: Light's Revenge booster drove a ton of interest.

#7: Gozuki

Riding the same hype, Gozuki's seen play as a singleton and two-of in recent Zombie Lightsworn decks, and players have been snapping up copies ever since it was released. It remains one of the bestselling cards from Duelist Saga, even as it garners mixed reviews from the Top Cut finishers running it.

#6: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

Dinosmasher's Fury releases this Friday and Maximum Crisis is just around the corner. For weeks that's meant big hype surrounding all the key cards for the True King Dinosaur deck, and no card is so clutch for that strategy than our repeat Market Watch staple, True King Lithosagym, the Disaster.

Ravaging your opponent's Extra Deck and triggering the abilities of Babycerasaurus and Petiteranodon, Lithosagym's a must-run in what might become the deck-to-beat this WCQ season.

#5: Lost Wind

After a string of YCS wins, Paleozoic Frogs failed to make the Top 4 at YCS Denver and took only three seats in the Top 32, as players Side Decked hard to beat it.

But that didn't stop Lost Wind from remaining a top pick, serving as a key three-of in Paleozoics that continues to migrate into other strategies. It's still an easy buy, and with Paleozoics getting thumped so hard at Denver, fewer players may be Side Decking for them in upcoming tournaments. That could mean renewed opportunity.

#3: Subterror Nemesis Archer

With Subterror Fiendess now revealed, hopes are running high for Subterror players. The Fiendess is a powerful negation hand trap that works only when you control a Subterror, and turns your Subterror monster face-down in the process. It packs a secondary effect that sets any face-up monster you control as well, and then Special Summons a Subterror from your hand or even your graveyard as a free plus, in a position of your choice.

It has the potential to be a crazy-powerful card that finally brings the Subterror theme into competition, and that sparked a ton of buys for Subterror Nemesis Archer, which can search it along with any other Subterror of your choice.

#2: The Hidden City

Even more popular, the must-run Subterror Field Spell The Hidden City exploded over the weekend and doubled in price over night. As a Secret Rare from The Dark Illusion, which wasn't didn't get a Special Edition release in most TCG territories, it could easily climb higher over the coming week.

Effectively a Fire Formation Tenki from hell, The Hidden City packs a powerful search effect on its front end and then becomes a repeatable enabler for some of the Subterror deck's most important effects.

#1: SPYRAL Super Agent

And finally, the Number 1 bestselling card in the TCGplayer Marketplace over the weekend was none other than the SPYRAL linchpin, SPYRAL Super Agent!

While you'd rather not banish Super Agent for the new SPYRAL Sleeper if possible, it clears the way for your Special Summon so Sleeper can go to work demolishing the rest of the field. When and if the Sleeper ever gets taken down, it then revives or Special Summons Super Agent from your deck or hand, too, lending it even more synergy.

SPYRALS are a hot prospect after seeing just one of their new support cards who knows what else the theme will get in Maximum Crisis. It's really no surprise that SPYRAL Super Agent was the most wanted card of the weekend.

Looking beyond the Top 10, the same trends continued right on down the sales charts.

Subterror Behemoth Ultramafus took the Number 11 spot and Subterror Cave Clash took Number 15 on the strength of Subterror Fiendess, ; SPYRAL Tough clocked Number 12 in the wake of SPYRAL Sleeper; Baobaboon dropped to the Number 13 position but remained strong after that big showing at YCS Denver; and True King Agnimazud, the Vanisher took Number 14 as we count the days to True King Dinosaurs.

Will the hype hold for long? We'll find out on Friday, when we return with another TCGplayer Market Watch!
