In the last two installments of TCGplayer's Maximum Crisis Giant Set Review, we looked at some of the best, strangest, and unique Main Deck monsters in the core set. Now, here in Part 3, we're going to focus in on the Extra Deck monsters.

One of the interesting things about Maximum Crisis compared to a set like Raging Tempest is that a lot of the greatest cards aren't actually Extra Deck monsters. But that doesn't mean there aren't powerful cards in this part of the release, and it just might give some insight into how Konami is preparing for Link Summoning, where regular Extra Deck monsters are a bit harder to come by.

Regardless, let's take a look at some of the Extra Deck monsters that I found worth discussing.

If this card is Fusion Summoned: You can inflict 200 damage to your opponent for each card on the field, then, if this card was Fusion Summoned using a Pendulum Monster as Material, destroy 1 monster your opponent controls, and if you do, inflict damage to your opponent equal to that monster's original ATK. You can only use this effect of "Performapal Gatlinghoul" once per turn.

Summoning Performapal Gatlinghoul isn't as hard as you might think. Its Fusion Materials are any Performapal and a Level 5 or higher Dark monster, so you've got a lot of different monsters to choose from. You could splash in a small Zoodiac engine to summon it, grabbing Lunalight Black Sheep with Zoodiac Broadbull, or if you wanted to stay more pure you could stick to Performapal Trump Witch.

Either way, you'll get a 2900 ATK beater for your troubles, that provides monster removal and plenty of burn damage. As a finisher in a deck that currently lacks an end-game, Performapal Gatlinghoul does a great job at what it's meant to do - even if it's pretty linear.

If you saw The Tyrant Neptune on the recent Forbidden & Limited List and wondered why, here's your answer. You can bring out Lyrilusc - Independent Nightingale with Instant Fusion, and you can tribute it for The Tyrant Neptune, which could be used to copy Independent Nightingale's effects.

First, that would pump The Tyrant Neptune up to 5000 ATK, and make it unaffected by card effects. More importantly though, it would burn your opponent for 5000 damage once per turn. It was a stupidly consistent combo because you could search out The Tyrant Neptune with King of the Feral Imps, and I'm glad it never got to see the light of day here in the TCG.

The Phantom Knights of Cursed Javelin is actually just crazy good. It might have low ATK, but you can detach a material to reduce a monster's ATK to 0 and negate its effect, just as long as you have a Phantom Knight under it as a material! Phantom Knights have been behind in the competitive landscape for a while now, but Cursed Javelin gives them a wonderful first turn Rank 3 to make as a defensive, synergistic option!

…Oh, wait. What was that?

It's a Rank 2?

Yeah… So all the good Phantom Knights are Level 3 monsters, and Cursed Javelin is a Rank 2. The idea is that you're meant to use the new trap card The Phantom Knights of Lost Vambrace to turn a Phantom Knight you control into Level 2, and then overlay it with the monster version of Lost Vambrace. That would barely be viable if it was a spell, but it's way too slow as a trap. The sad part is that I really like Cursed Javelin, but sadly it looks like it's unplayable for the time being.

The Lyrilusc theme has its issues, but Lyrilusc - Assembled Nightingale is seriously good for a Rank 1. It has an ATK boosting effect and a multi-attack ability that can deal high damage to an unprepared opponent, and it also carries a blanket protection effect for your Lyrilusc monsters, including itself.

Pretty cool, even if it's most likely to appear in SPYRALs more than anything.

If Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King wasn't convincing enough in getting you to Main Deck Kaijus this format, True King of All Calamities might change your mind. This thing is nuts, and it's a huge reason why True King Dinosaurs are so competitive heading into WCQ season. It's a generic Rank 9, usually being made with a True King monster and a Level 9 Denglong, First of the Yang Zing. There are plenty of two and three card combos in Dinosaurs that get True King of All Calamities on the field next to Evolzar Laggia, so be ready for that.

While on the field, you can detach a material from Calamities to declare one attribute. For the rest of the turn, all monsters on the field become that attribute, and all monsters in your opponent's possession of that attribute can't activate their effects or attack. If you're unfamiliar with the term “possession” in Yu-Gi-Oh, it applies to all cards that are in your hand, graveyard, deck, and in-between. If it's written on your deck list, it's probably “in your possession.”

That means True King of All Calamities is crushing on Turn 1. When your opponent draws a card in the Dinosaur mirror match, you can immediately call Earth to shut down a bunch of their effects. The best way to deal with it is to use hand or graveyard effects, but by calling Earth you turn off Babycerasaurus, Petiteranodon, and True King Lithosagym, the Disaster. The good news is that True King of All Calamities is susceptible to spells and traps like Raigeki, Forbidden Chalice, and Breakthrough Skill, making it slightly less painful to get rid of than Master Peace.

Oh, and you can also pop cards on your opponent's field if you're activating True Draco or True King effects in the hand, instead of your own monsters.

Just to add insult to injury.

Zoodiac Hammerkong is in the same spot as Zoodiac Boarbow. It'll usually just be a stepping stone for better Zoodiac Xyz Monsters, but its effect will come up occasionally to clutch the game.

While Zoodiac Hammerkong is on the field, your opponent can't target your other Zoodiacs with cards effects. That's decently relevant in the mid game when both players have a lot of resources, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Hammerkong become a staple one-of in the Zoodiac Extra Deck.

The much better Zoodiac Xyz Monster in Maximum Crisis is Zoodiac Chakanine. It carries all the classic Zoodiac Xyz Effects, but its unique ability lets you detach an Xyz Material to Special Summon a Zoodiac from the graveyard. It can't be used as Xyz Material or activate its effects for the rest of the turn, but the effect is useful for a whole bunch of reasons.

The popular way to use it is to revive Zoodiac Ramram, which you can then pop with Zoodiac Drident to get a free Special Summon. You could also bring back a used Hammerkong to get the targeting disruption if you wanted. But the real reason this thing is so crazy is because it lets you turn any Zoodiac monster into several draws with Lunalight Black Sheep.

All you have to do is summon any Zoodiac, overlay into any Zoodiac Xyz, and then make Zoodiac Broadbull. From there, you'll search Lunalight Black Sheep by detaching the Zoodiac Xyz Monster, followed up by making Zoodiac Chakanine. That revives the Zoodiac Xyz Monster, putting two Fusion Materials for Elder Entity Norden onto the field, which you can make off of a searched Fusion Substitute that you grabbed with Black Sheep. It makes Lunalight Black Sheep much more consistent, and opens up a variety of new combos for Zoodiac players.

And that's it for Part 3 of our Giant Set Review of Maximum Crisis! There weren't a lot of monsters to talk about here, but tomorrow in Part 4 we'll look at a bunch of insanely competitive cards that are found in the spells and traps. Stay tuned for that, as there's only two more parts to this set review before we wrap things up.
