Welcome back to the Giant Maximum Crisis Set Review!

Last time, we looked at the first half of the Main Deck monsters found in the core booster, featuring competitive cards like the new Predaplants as well as casual themes like the Supreme King Gates. Today, we're looking at a ton of competitive, game-changing cards that are already affecting deck building and tournaments across the world.

Without a doubt, the most impactful set of cards in the entire set are the True Draco and True King support. There's a variety of reasons that's the case, and Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter is a good starting point.

The True Dracos tend to be higher Level monsters, but you can Tribute Summon them by tributing Continuous Spells or Traps. Those cards don't have to be face-up, either. The True Draco and True King spells and traps get free destructions when they're sent to the graveyard, too: the spells destroy backrow, the traps destroy monsters.

Beyond that there's just a ton of combo potential here with previous continuous cards. Metalfoes Combination is one of your best options, because you can set it from your deck with the Pendulum Scale effects of the Metalfoes monsters, and then you'll get a free search, too.

Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter's field effect lets you set a True Draco or True King Continuous Trap from your deck when your opponent activates a card or effect. That's great for accelerating even more cards into play that you can tribute off for other True Dracos, and it basically has no downside at all. It's no surprise that Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter is currently slated to be the second most popular True Draco monster, right after…

One of the most controversial cards in the set, Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King is another addition to the list of monsters that are unaffected by card effects. However, it's a bit more unique in execution, even though it very well could prove to be more of a problem than any other of the monsters like it.

Like the rest of the True Dracos in Maximum Crisis, you can Tribute Summon Master Peace by tributing Continuous Spells and Traps instead of monsters. Whatever two types of cards you tributed – monsters, spells, or traps – are what Master Peace is immune to. During either player's turn, you can banish a Continuous Spell or Trap in your graveyard to destroy a card, too.

On a basic level, Master Peace is slightly easier to deal with than cards like Apoqliphort Towers because it'll always be affected by one type of card. From a deck building standpoint, you should be fine as long as you have several different ways of dealing with monsters on the field.

But Master Peace is inarguably the easiest to Summon of all the monsters like it, largely due to Dragonic Diagram. We'll talk about that more in Part 4, but for now just know that Diagram can search pretty much anything you'd want in True Dracos. With cards like Terraforming to grab it, as well as deck thinning like Pot of Desires, Card of Demise, and Pot of Duality, True Dracos can consistently see the hands they want on Turn 1.

Keep in mind too that when you're summoning Master Peace you're not only bringing out an indestructible monster, but you're probably destroying a card or two depending on which True Draco spell or traps you tribute as well, and you get another free pop with Master Peace's effect afterwards. That's a ton of momentum, and it'll prove difficult for a lot of rogue decks to deal with going into the summer.

Metaltron XII, the True Dracombatant isn't the most consistent True Draco out there, but it packs an awesome effect when it's destroyed that lets you Special Summon a monster from your Extra Deck. There's a whole bunch of cheesy cards you can bring out like Shooting Star Dragon and Last Warrior from Another Planet. I'm not sure if people will play this monster seriously since it requires three tributes, but it's definitely a cool option.

For some reason, there's a whole new theme that revolves around summoning Phantasm Spiral Dragon from your deck using Equip Spells and Normal Monsters. They even have their own Field Spell – Pacifis, the Phantasm City – which searches cards when you summon your Normal Monsters.

The Equip Spells aren't the easiest option to pull off, and the deck itself suffers from a lot of bricking. When you have to play a bunch of Level 4 Normal Monsters and potentially useless Equip Spells you're going to hit some rough times. Some people have tried Phantasm Spirals out, but I think they're too inconsistent even for a rogue choice.

Still, it's an idea that we've never really seen fully fleshed out before, so it adds to the new types of styles of cards found in Maximum Crisis.

Maybe I'm bias because I really liked Digital Bugs when they were released, but I'm happy to see Konami actually acknowledging their existence outside of the one other set they appeared in. Digital Bug LEDybug doesn't fix the theme's consistency issues, but it's a welcome addition for the players that are still trying the theme.

If the True Draco cards are a bit out of your price range, Zefras are looking like a good budget option for players looking to score their invite to a World Championship Qualifier. That's mostly due to Zefraath, the new boss monster that Zefra players never knew they needed.

As a Pendulum Scale, you can use Zefraath to recycle cards from your Extra Deck. That's an excellent way to fix bad hands and extend your plays in a deck heavily centered on performing a variety of Extra Deck summons in one turn.

If you want to summon the 3450 ATK behemoth, you'll have to tribute all monsters you control, including three Zefra monsters. That's not impossible when you consider how strong of a Pendulum Summon you can get off of Zefras, but what do you get for your troubles?

A second Pendulum Summon!

No, really. That's literally what Zefraath does. It gives you a second Pendulum Summon for Zefra monsters. That's insane, and on top of it you get to tribute monsters to Special Summon a Zefra from your deck once per turn. This thing is huge, has a relevant effect, and could take Zefras to the next level.

I mentioned in Part 1 how we're actually getting two Pendulum Scale 0 monsters in the same set after we never had any previously. Pendulumucho's the second one, and it's really powerful. As a Pendulum Scale, you can put a Pendulum Monster from your grave or removed zone into your Extra Deck face-up. Not broken by any means, but a decent piece of recovery.

As a monster, you get to Special Summon a Level 1 Pendulum monster from your Extra Deck when you Normal or Special Summon Pendulumucho. It's banished when it leaves the field, but you'll most likely be using it for Xyz Material anyway. Pendulumucho might be too little too late for Level 1 monsters in Pendulum decks, but I've already seen people testing fun Mystic Piper Pendulum strategies just because the option is now there.

I know that I personally will be testing this thing in a lot of decks over the coming weeks, and I can't wait to see what people come up with for it.

A lot of people seemed to forget that Baobaboon is actually from Maximum Crisis because we've had it for weeks already, thanks to the Raging Tempest Special Edition. It's almost singlehandedly responsible for the viability of Zoodiac Metalfoes, and you're definitely going to see more of it when you consider how much Master Peace helps out that deck as well. Zoodiac Metalfoes are pretty crazy with Maximum Crisis, so expect to see it in tournaments for the coming months.

At the time of writing of this article, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring is the most expensive monster in the entire set, sitting at an average Market Price of $84. It's the next monster in the line of Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit and Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries, although this one will assuredly make the biggest splash on competition.

Want to activate a card effect that would touch your deck? Too bad.

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring negates a whole slew of cards and effects: anything that would add a card from your deck to your hand, like Terraforming or Souleating Oviraptor; anything that would Special Summon from the deck, like Zoodiac Barrage; or anything that would send a card from the deck to the graveyard, like That Grass Looks Greener.

Many consider Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to be a staple three-of for the next few months because it casts such a wide net, and I'd expect that tournament results will bear that out. It just stops so many different things, and even though it doesn't destroy the card you negate that's hardly an issue. The price tag will keep some budget duelists from running it, but if you want to play seriously at the World Championship Qualifiers then you'll need to have Ash Blossoms. It's really that simple.

And that's the last Main Deck monster in the core set! Check back tomorrow for Part 3 where we'll look at the Extra Deck monsters. There's a ton of cool and unique cards you might have overlooked, as well as one critical piece of the True King Dinosaur puzzle.
