So far we've only looked at the monster cards in Maximum Crisis. Today in Part 4 of the Giant Set Review, it's all about spells and traps! Some of the best cards in the set - if not the best card - are found in this section.

We've got a ton to talk about, so with no further ado let's get started.

For whatever reason, I actually like the concept of Magician's Right Hand. Negating a spell once per turn is great, making it a solid opening defensive line for all Spellcaster decks out there.

The downfall is that you absolutely need it Turn 1 for it to make an impact, and you don't really want to see multiple copies. I doubt we're ever getting another Battle Pack, but this is a card I'd like to see in one if we ever did.

Oh hey, the Secret Rare everybody wants to pull!

Dragonic Diagram's the must-have card of Maximum Crisis. It has two lesser relevant effects: the first boosts your True Draco and True King monsters by 300 ATK and DEF, the second prevents Tributed Summoned True Draco or True King monsters from being destroyed once per turn.

The third effect is the more important one, letting you pop a card in your control or your hand to search any True Draco or True King. That's not restricted to just monsters, and it's also not restricted to a hard once per turn, so if you have multiple copies you can keep using them.

That's insane for a lot of reasons. Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King is a fantastic card, but takes two tributes to bring out. If you already have one, you can use Dragonic Diagram to search a Continuous Spell or Trap to give you tribute fodder. If you have the fodder but not the Master Peace then you can search it instead. Depending on what decks you're splashing True Dracos into you can destroy dead Fire Formation - Tenkis, Metalfoes, and more, too.

And while Dragonic Diagram's amazing in True Draco variants, I think it truly shines in Dinosaurs. As you might know, Dinosaurs want to abuse their two Level 2 Dinosaurs as much as possible - Babycerasaurus and Petiteranodon. Their effects trigger when they're destroyed, and the more you destroy them the further you can advance your combos.

Dragonic Diagram destroys one of the babies to search True King Lithosagym, the Disaster, triggering the Level 2's effect to Special Summon Souleating Oviraptor, which grabs another Level 2 Dinosaur. You can then use Lithosagym's effect to destroy the searched Dinosaur and another card, which is where things start spiraling out of control.

To me, Dragonic Diagram seems to be another step in the strategy of destroying your own cards for benefits. Fire King Island did a similar thing, but required you to play Fire King monsters that were often bricks. Zoodiac Barrage and Metalfoes are better in that regard, but only let you destroy things on the field. Dragonic Diagram takes the best from both of these, which is why it's unsurprising that it's the most valuable card in the set. Expect to see this almost every match at the next competitive event you attend.

The go-to True Draco spell, True Draco Heritage gives you an extra Normal Summon and mimics Super Rejuvenation. The extra Normal Summon's especially useful because it means you can do all your normal combos to bait out backrow, and then simply Tribute Summon an unaffected Master Peace when your opponent runs out of cards.

Another aspect to consider is that the True Draco spells destroy backrow when they're sent to the graveyard. That makes floodgates risky against True Dracos, because they can use Dragonic Diagram to grab this and pop whatever floodgate was flipped. That could be a huge difference-maker this summer at the North American World Championship Qualifier, and it's absolutely something that separates True Dracos from past best decks.

It's not as popular as True Draco Heritage, but Disciples of the True Dracophoenix does have a nice recycling effect for the mid-game. Luckily you don't need to play more than one copy because Dragonic Diagram can add it when you really need it.

I'm a big fan of simple cards that get the job done. Zefra Providence isn't nearly as powerful or wild as Zefraath, but it's definitely a staple three-of in all Zefra decks moving forward.

Providence searches any Zefra on activation - including the crucial Oracle of Zefra - and it's also got a graveyard protection effect along the lines of Return of the Dragon Lords. It's not super flashy, but it's a welcome addition that boosts Zefras to semi-competitive status.

Did anyone see B.E.S. support coming? No?

B.E.F. Zelos does a whole lot for one of the most fragile themes ever created. The B.E.S. monsters all have slight variations on their effects, but the main idea is that they're given counters that they lose when they battle, and they blow up when all the counters are gone. B.E.F. Zelos gives them all 500 ATK and DEF, makes them un-targetable, and immune to destruction by opposing card effects. And you get to Special Summon one of them from your hand once per turn.

This probably won't make them the next game defining deck, but it's a hilarious buff for a totally forgotten theme. Turning all your B.E.S. monsters into Kozmo Dark Destroyer does sound pretty appealing.

Set Rotation is awesome, and people are already trying it out in a bunch of different decks. Basically, you give your opponent and yourself different Field Spells from your deck, and if either one of them is face-down no other Field Spells can be activated.

You can use it as extra copies of Terraforming, or you can interrupt your opponent's plays on their turn by destroying their field spell. But the most entertaining way to use it is to give your opponent a card they can't flip up, like Gateway to Chaos. Because Gateway has a mandatory search effect, your opponent isn't allowed to play it unless they have something in their deck to search.

Considering the huge role Field Spells are going to play this format, Set Rotation could act as a floodgate that's really tough to deal with. There's always the chance that you might draw Gateway to Chaos, but that's what happens with higher risk, higher reward cards like this one.

The True King traps blow up monsters when they're sent to the graveyard, adding another dimension to the quickly expanding True Draco strategy. True King's Return lets you revive a True Draco from your graveyard once per turn as well, and Tribute Summon a True Draco, although each of those effects can't be used in the same chain.

Tributing True King's Return to summon a Master Peace on your opponent's turn is nutty because you get the monster destruction from Return and then the destruction from Master Peace, so you'll have to carefully consider which cards you want to commit to the field.

As legacy support for Buster Blader goes it doesn't get much better than Prologue of the Destruction Swordsman. It sets up your graveyard, Special Summons an Extra Deck monster, and keeps your guys from being destroyed once per turn. Dimonists Howling is sort of like a Geargiagear for Dinomists. I'm not sure how relevant Dinomists will be going forward, but this seems like a pretty good addition to the deck considering it instantly sets up your Pendulum Scales as a +1 and functions as a once per turn Compulsory Evacuation Device.

If Zefra War was an Icarus Attack it would have been amazing. As it stands, it's still decent spot removal that you can search with numerous cards, and it gives you the option of using it on your own turn if you have two Zefras in your Pendulum Scales. It could have been better, and it's not nearly as useful as the previous two Zefra cards in Maximum Crisis, but still playable.

It's really disappointing that Waterfall of Dragon Souls is overshadowed by both Dragonic Diagram and True Draco Heritage, because I think it's actually a very powerful card with some beautiful artwork. In the event that Dragonic Diagram ever gets hit on the Forbidden & Limited List, my mind would immediately go to Waterfall of Dragon Souls if you wanted to still play True King Dinosaurs.

When you activate it, you either get to add a Wyrm to your hand or send Wyrms to the graveyard to draw that many cards plus another. The problem with Waterfall of Dragon Souls is that it's never going to be a plus in card economy, but I don't think that means it's bad. If you're on a budget and want to play a watered down version of True King Dinosaurs I think this would be a place to start.

Unending Nightmare's the last card that we'll look at in today's Set Review, and it's in a weird spot. It's a Continuous Trap that's good against other face-up spells and traps, but it's also susceptible to all forms of backrow destruction. 1000 Life Points is a steep cost even though you can use it a bunch of times in one turn, potentially wiping out all of your opponent's backrow.

It is, however, a great counter to Field Spells, especially Dragonic Diagram. Assuming your opponent doesn't have a True Draco spell to tribute to pop Unending Nightmare, you could theoretically destroy every Dragonic Diagram your opponent throws at you. If anything, I see Unending Nightmare as a solid Side Deck pick.

And that's all we have for Part 4! As you can see, the spells and traps of Maximum Crisis packed in a lot of powerful cards. Many of them can be used in a variety of decks so be prepared to face them. Stay tuned for the final part of TCGplayer's Giant Set Review, where we'll look at the World Premiers and OCG imports!
