Market Watch: Response To The New F&L List

Monday saw us recap a tremendous surge of interest in Phantasm Spiral cards, as an attempted buyout of HeatWave sent that card's price soaring, and kicking off demand for everything from Phantasm Spiral Dragon to Pacifics, the Phantasm City. The hype seemed both engineered and short lived, but surprisingly one of those cards actually managed to survive the huge secondary market response to the new F&L List.

Meanwhile the remaining nine slots in the week's Top 10 were all directly linked to the six changes to the Advanced Format. With no further ado, let's discuss the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace this week, from Monday to this morning.

#10: Sky Iris

With Performapal Skullcrobat Joker, Wisdom-Eye Magician, and Pendulum Call all back at three in advance of the upcoming Pendulum Evolution release one month from now, a sudden demand for Pendulum Magician cards was the biggest trend of the week. While the new F&L List dropped just hours before the cutoff for this sales period, so many cards were sold in about a 16 hour period that the new F&L List totally determined the shape of the Top 10.

While it's largely accepted that the new Link Summoning rules will have a big negative impact on Pendulum Summoning, many believe that Pendulum Magicians may be one of the few Pendulum themes that could survive, in large part because of the deck's ties to Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon. That perception was likely one of the biggest reasons that players flocked to Sky Iris yesterday.

#9: Pacifis, the Phantasm City

Yup, this is still happening. The largely manufactured demand for Phantasm Spiral cards is clearly dying out, but Pacifis managed to hold onto the Number 9 position off last weekend's surge, and Phantasm Spiral Dragon made it to the Number 15 spot.

#8: Unending Nightmare

Unending Nightmare saw lots of play in early Maximum Crisis Regionals, largely as an answer to Pendulum strategies like Zoodiac Metalfoes. Now, with Pendulum Magicians potentially making a comeback next month, Unending Nightmare popped back into the Top 10 as players look to preempt the possible Pendulum trend.

#7: Pendulum Call

Now back at three, and with accompanying cards off the F&L List plus related support coming down the pipe in Pendulum Evolution, it's easy to understand the demand for Pendulum Call. It's now sitting at an average Market Price of $4 since it's never been reprinted.

#6: Predaplant Darlingtonia Cobra

With Speedroid Terrortop effectively gone from competition due to its newly Limited status, the Predaplant engine seems destined to take its place in tournaments. Predaplant Darlingtonia Cobra and Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio have already seen lots of tournament success, in part as a Rank 3 engine and in part as a searcher for Instant Fusion, Fusion Substitute, and Brilliant Fusion.

And while your search options are now more limited with Fusion Substitute virtually gone, and Instant Fusion bound to be less popular, Brilliant Fusion's still amazing and fast access to Rank 3's is still phenomenal. Predaplant Darlingtonia Cobra is the less important of the two Predaplants seeing play since you want to search it with Ophrys Scorpio instead of drawing it, but even as a 2-of or 1-of in most builds, it sold enough copies to reach Number 6.

It's a common, it's cheap, and it's going to see tons of play this WCQ season.

#5: Performapal Skullcrobat Joker

Returning to three-per-deck from Limited status, Performapal Skullcrobat Joker sold even better than Pendulum Call. While many of its previous partners in crime are now gone Performage Damage Juggler, Performage Plushfire, and Performapal Monkeyboard it's still tremendously useful for searching a shorter list of Performapals, as well as Magician Pendulums and Odd-Eyes monsters.

An 1800 ATK searcher you can play in threes? The appeal is pretty easy to see.

#4: Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer

Speaking of Performapals searchable with Performapal Skullcrobat Joker? This guy.

Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer's always been a part of successful Pendulum Magician decks in the past, packing an awesome search effect that can set you up for big combos and offer massive hand fixing. It turns dead, redundant, or just plain used cards into fresh new ones.

Sorcerer starts new combos, lengthens existing ones, and makes Pendulum Magicians vastly more powerful and consistent. While the Super Rare Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer is still easy to pick up, the Secret Rare has almost doubled in price already. Expect that trend to continue over the weekend.

#3: Wisdom-Eye Magician

Currently up 50% from its previous Market Price, Wisdom-Eye Magician's another combo-starting consistency builder for Pendulum Magicians. There's not much to say; the deck's reliability is essentially a function of its diverse range of search effects, and Wisdom-Eye's always been a key part of that. The deck took a big hit when Wisdom-Eye was first restricted since it lost a flexible search effect that also helped load your Extra Deck.

Now it's back at three, and suddenly what looked like a purely casual release in Pendulum Evolution is starting to look like it may see serious table time.

#2: Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio

Largely played in threes in different Predaplant engines, with one or two copies of Predaplant Darlingtonia Cobra, a varying number of Lonefire Blossoms, and occasionally even an Angel Trumpeter, Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio's the heart of what's likely to replace the Speedroid engine.

While its effect is more costly than Speedroid Terrortop's and maximizing its potential can require more Main Deck and Extra Deck space, Ophrys Scorpio has a higher power ceiling overall. Brilliant Fusion's an amazing card, and the ability to search it as a value-add along with plays you already wanted to make is always going to be impressive. We've seen Scorpio repeatedly in our Top 10's since MACR launched, and now it's even hotter.

#1: Duelist Alliance

And finally, speculation ran wild on Duelist Alliance the past 24 hours. Demand soared, but supply rushed to meet it, resulting in two very rare scenarios.

First, the current price for the card is actually lower now than its previous average Market Price, now available for $10 instead of the week-long average of $13. That doesn't happen often. At the same time, the highest selling card of the week was a Secret Rare, and one from the latest set to boot. That virtually never happens, as nonfoils and Super Rares are always much more accessible, not to mention stocked far deeper.

Those points represent an incredible enthusiasm for Duelist Alliance, which may translate into big play for the strategy when Pendulum Evolution arrives. Or, it may just be a ton of speculation; a lot of collectors and sellers might have been willing to bet ten dollars that Duelist Alliance will become a twenty dollar card four weeks from now.

Whatever the reason, this is a huge card to watch in the next week or two. If demand remains high, it speaks to a greater chance of the demand being play-driven, as more players come to want the card. If demand drops off drastically despite the approachable price trend, it probably means this spike was chiefly speculation and that Duelist Alliance as well as Pendulum Magicians as a whole have less of a competitive future than some would hope.

Regardless, it's a memorable Number 1 and it's shocking to see it happen in something like a 12 or 16 hour timeframe from the announcement of the new F&L List.

What else was big? Wiseman's Chalice made it all the way to Number 11. It's actually on an upward price trend right now. Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King clocked in at Number 12, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit took Number 13, and Lost Wind came in at Number 14.

That's it for now, but join us Monday to see how the weekend shakes out in the secondary market. There were really no mysteries in the TCGplayer Marketplace in the first responses to the new F&L List, but there's some depth to that Unending Nightmare surge, and we're bound to see some more next-level trends over the next few days.

See you then!
