Market Watch Top 10: More F&L Fallout, And A Look Ahead

Welcome to another Market Watch!

Friday showed us the immediate impact of the new F&L List less than 24 hours after the June 12th Advanced Format was revealed: Performapal Skullcrobat Joker, Pendulum Call, and Wisdom-Eye Magician did huge numbers, newly freed from the List; complements like Duelist Alliance and Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer followed in their wake; and other cards, like Unending Nightmare and Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio, spiked in response to the changes.

Now it's Monday, and the dust has settled over the course of another Regional weekend. The Yugiverse has had time to better consider the shape of competition come June 12th, and sales patterns from the weekend suggest some very specific expectations for tournament play in June.

As a refresher: our Market Watch articles take sales data from the TCGplayer Marketplace, measuring the sheer volume of sales over the last few days to identify the ten hottest cards in the game. The Marketplace isn't just one store it's a gateway to over a thousand active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers, and since it lets you comparison shop for the prices, conditions, and printings you want, it's an incredible source of reams of information. We condense that down to make educated guesses about tournament trends, player responses to upcoming products, and reactions to the hottest news items.

Today, we'll look at how the weekend played out, in light of the news of the new format. Here's what happened.

#10: Brilliant Fusion

With Fusion Substitute and Instant Fusion hamstrung by the Forbidding of Elder Entity Norden, Brilliant Fusion is suddenly a more important combo card to both start and lengthen your plays. And while it could continue in a niche role moving forward, the rising popularity of Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio and Predaplant Darlingtonia Cobra may have played a role in jumping Brilliant Fusion to the Top 10.

Scorpio and Cobra were already seeing tournament success before the new format dropped, but with Speedroid Terrortop now Limited, both cards will see more play. And since the combo produces a free search effect along with a Rank 3, Brilliant Fusion's suddenly more relevant.

#9: Sylvan Princessprite

The boosted demand for Sylvan Princessprite over the weekend may be a bit tougher to pin down. While it's almost inarguably the best Rank 1 ever printed, I'm not sure if the new format or any new releases are actually going to push it into competition. Regardless, it's a strong card available a very affordable price, and tons of players snapped up their copies the last three days. If we're missing something here, let us know down in the comments.

#8: Wisdom-Eye Magician

Down from the Number 3 spot on Friday, Wisdom-Eye Magician's a hand fixing combo powerhouse in all forms of Pendulum Magicians, and if new takes on the theme are going to be successful thanks to Pendulum Evolution, they'll almost certainly run this card, which was never reprinted after its first issue in the Master of Pendulum Structure Deck.

#7: Mist Valley Apex Avian

Once a hugely popular Pendulum Summon in Pendulum Magicians, Mist Valley Apex Avian was overshadowed as a utility-driven control anchor when Majespecter Unicorn Kirin arrived. But with Kirin long gone from competition and Level 7 Pednulum Summoning set to make a return, the run on Avian makes a lot of sense.

Renewable free negation's hugely powerful, and since Mist Valley Apex Avian was never printed again after Hidden Arsenal 2, supply is really low. It's on a minor upward price trend right now, but there are so few copies in the TCGplayer Marketplace that it could easily go from an eight dollar card to a twelve dollar card in just a few buys.

#6: Set Rotation

While Set Rotation saw virtually no notable play at YCS Pittsburgh, interest in True Draco monsters continues to rise as we get closer to the new format. If more players are running Dragonic Diagram in the next format, Set Rotation will see significantly more play, and that anticipation was likely what drove it back into the Top 10 this weekend.

#5: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

True King Dinosaurs made a rally in several Regional Top 8's this weekend after getting shut out of YCS Pittsburgh, and with Zoodiacs taking a bit of a thumping from the new list, a lot of players are clearly expecting Dinosaurs to have a better shot in competition. That meant more demand for True King Lithosagym, the Disaster, driving it up to Number 5.

#4: Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer

It was Number 4 on Friday and now it's number 4 again. Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer's one of several cards that lends search power and consistency to hypothetical Pendulum Magician decks when Pendulum Evolution releases, and the widely affordable Super Rare version from the 2016 Mega-Tins has made it an easy buy for anyone looking to get ahead of potential price spikes in June.

#3: Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio

As noted earlier, Speedroid Terrortop's loss is Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio. When you're the new Terrortop, you're a big deal, and the Number 10 placement of Brilliant Fusion just adds another indicator suggesting just how ubiquitous the Predaplant engine is set to become in the new format.

#2: Duelist Alliance

Slipping a little from its Number 1 on Friday, Duelist Alliance is technically on a rising Price Trend but still widely available for about ten bucks. We saw a ton of restocks over the weekend to meet demand, and as anticipation for Pendulum Evolution a month from now builds, Duelist Alliance will likely remain a popular pick in the Top 5 for a while.

#1: Fairy Tail - Luna

And finally, after disappearing from the Top 10 for a week and a half, Fairy Tail Luna returned in style, capturing the Number 1 spot almost out of nowhere. Already seeing some modest play in the OCG, where it's appeared in Windwitch Spellbook variants, searchable with The Grand Spellbook Tower and used chiefly for its disruption effect.

If it's seeing current TCG play I'm not aware of it, though we're still waiting for a ton of Regional deck lists from the weekend. Regardless, a surprising number of TCG competitors have shown interest in the Windwitch Spellbook strategy over the past few weeks, so that alone might have been the push factor as Luna remains affordable, at least for the moment.

Meanwhile Phantasm Spiral Dragon and Phantasm Spiral Battle clocked the Number 11 and Number 13 spots; True King's Return took Number 12, seemingly corresponding with a surge of Regional Top 8's for True Draco Zoodiacs; and Pendulum Call took Number 14.

We also saw some niche interest in Edge Imp Chain, even as news arrived that Frightfur Patchwork will not be arriving in Duelist Pack: Dimensional Guardians as many had expected. That leaves the future of Fluffals way up in the air for the entire summer, but clearly some players are keeping hope alive.

That's it for the weekend, but we'll be back on Friday with another Market Watch Top 10. See you then!
