Market Watch Top 10: The End-Of-Format Scramble

Welcome to one of the final Market Watches of the current Advanced Format!

A number of factors sent players and collectors scrambling in different directions this week, as new announcements in Asia's OCG, the anticipation of the 2017 Mega-Tins, and the advent of the June 12th format combined with recent Regional Results to swerve trends in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

The result of the wide variety of mixed push-factors made for a really scattered set of sales patterns from Monday to Friday, with a ton of individual or small-group speculators buying up hundreds of copies of relatively inexpensive long-shot cards; effectively the Yu-Gi-Oh! equivalent of gambling on penny stocks. But if we filter those out we get a Top 10 that largely makes sense, minus a couple of outliers.

Case in point?

#10: Number 20: Giga-Brilliant

Number 20: Giga-Brilliant hasn't really seen competitive play since Burning Abyss was widely played, but Link Summoning may be responsible for the sudden resurgence of popularity it saw this week. On its own, Giga-Brilliant is played in a few obscure Link Summoning combos. But in combination with Digital Bug Corebage it can make Digital Bug Rhinosebus, which becomes a lot more attractive as just a standard Extra Deck monster when you can only have one in play at a time due to Link Summoning rules.

Was that general appeal the reason for Number 20: Giga-Brilliant's spike this week? Maybe; it's certainly the best explanation I could come up with myself, and anyone I talked to. It's a solid card with relatively limited printings, and it's on a flat price trend across three different versions.

#9: Champion's Vigilance

Riding a wave of player awareness largely for its being a point of discussion in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, Champion's Vigilance has actually seen sales numbers the past few weeks that are quite a ways below the Top 10, but were still noteworthy. Whether that's because of the recent misguided belief that core game mechanics from Duel Links were going to work their way into the real life TCG, or because of Blue-Eyes White Dragon enthusiasm, or a remnant of Phantas Spiral hype is anybody's guess.

#8: Quaking Mirror Force

A top seller ever since its reprint in Structure Deck: Dinosmasher's Fury, Quaking Mirror Force has consistently hovered between $3.50 and $4 in its common form, and has seen some recent success in Regionals and Nationals level tournaments. It's a powerful trap card that always packs an element of surprise and we've seen it fade in and out of competition since its introduction in Breakers of Shadow, offering a non-targeting non-destroying answer to opposing threats that locks monsters face-down until you're ready to handle them.

#7: Fire King Avatar Barong

Fire Kings have been on a small uptrend lately, ever since it was revealed that Circuit Break would have legacy support for the theme. So far we've only seen Fire King Avatar Ganesha, but its negation effect is really powerful with destruction-triggered Fire monster effects, and its own trigger effect can help unbrick your hand and set off a string of Fire King effects.

It's an impressively flexible monster that smacks of all the best legacy support cards of the past, wearing different hats to fill a variety of holes in its theme. It's good stuff, and a lot of players snapped up Fire King Avatar Barongs this past week as a result, a few days removed from The Organization's spoiler coverage.

#6: Windwitch - Ice Bell

Windwitches are really big right now in the OCG, with a variety of successful builds focused on True Dracos, Invoked monsters, Artifact / Traptrix mash-ups, and Spellbooks. Effectively a Speedroid Terrortop alternative that's more narrow but easier to play than Predaplants, Windwitches are a huge part of competition overseas and that's kept them in demand here in the TCG. And while Ice Bell and Windwitch - Glass Bell were getting pretty pricy for a while, they've really come down over the last six weeks.

How long that will last is up in the air, but I think a lot of people saw their current price point as a big opportunity this past week, and made their purchases accordingly.

#5: Return of the Dragon Lords

Everything Blue-Eyes White Dragon is still relatively expensive and hot these days, despite the possible reprint of cards like Sage with Eyes of Blue in the upcoming Seto Kaiba Mega-Tin. Return of the Dragon Lords climbed even higher in price as a result of strong sales this week, reaching an average Market Price of almost $7.50 despite pages of listings in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

#4: Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio

Speaking of Speedroid Terrortop replacements, we've seen Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio get the bulk of the attention for that function since its release, with repeat Regional and YCS Top Cut finishes. With Fusion Substitute on its way out, we've even seen Brilliant Fusion take a seat at the Top 10 table, newly bolstered by Predaplant Darlingtonia Cobra's search ability.

As of this writing, Brilliant Fusion is up to about $10 at its lowest available price in the TCGplayer Marketplace. Instant Fusion's searchable with Cobra as well, and while that card's viability is reeled back in from the stratosphere with Elder Entity Norden Forbidden, we are seeing Sea Monster of Theseus on a slightly upward price trend as an alternative.

#3: Windwitch - Winter Bell

While Windwitch - Glass Bell and Windwitch - Ice Bell have been fairly frequent sights in our Top 10 countdowns, Windwitch - Winter Bell's only rarely made waves in the sales trend pool. This week we saw a correction to that, as Winter Bell reached the Number 3 spot. It's become ubiquitous on the Windwitch-fueled OCG, and at a Market Price of 25 cents could easily be seen as undervalued.

#2: Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries

As National Championship decks roll in from across the globe, we've seen some interesting tech choices and some uncommon strategies. One of the finer points along those lines was Herman Hansson's use of triple Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries to win the Swedish Nationals, running a Zoodiac build with no Elder Entity Norden and no Speedroid Terrortop. With a ton of free card slots, Hansson played triple Ghost Reaper mained, and that generated a ton of interest in the card.

That pushed Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries a couple dollars higher than its current average Market Price, and now that its caught player attention it could become an even bigger buy.

#1: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

And finally, the bestselling card of the week was once again True King Lithosagym, the Disaster. Despite the divided hype for True King Dinosaurs post June 12th, and the recent encouraging Regional results for that strategy, Lithosagym is on a downward price trend and more affordable than it has been in a while. Whenever a card with such potential is so affordable players and speculators alike are going to pick up their copies, and with ample supply in the TCGplayer Marketplace, a Mountain of copies were moved this week.

Whether True King Dinosaurs make the competitive cut or not, we can expect to see a lot of them in contention early into the new format.

What else was big this week? Twin Twisters clocked in at Number 11 off rising popularity, while Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster was the 12th bestselling card of the week, indicating continued interest in True Draco Zoodiacs and perhaps Demise True Dracos.

Brilliant Fusion took Number 13 with Predaplants being such a hot prospect; Set Rotation was Number 14 with Dragonic Diagram seeing more and more play, and looking huge for the next format; and Waterfall of Dragon Souls punched the Number 15 spot.

This is a huge Regional weekend in North America, so we could see some cool stuff happen by Monday. If we do, it could impact our next Market Watch, so be sure to join us for another Top 10 at the start of the week!
