Market Watch Top 10: True Dracos, Heat Wave, and Dimensional Guardians

After a turbulent Market Watch Top 10 last week, we're coming off a weekend packed with no fewer than eleven North American Regionals, and some interesting weekend trends emerged in the secondary market on our way to the new Advanced Format just seven days from now.

Welcome to our Monday Market Watch!

Very few results from the latest Regional Qualifiers have been made public yet, but we know one thing for sure: the widespread adoption of True Dracos certainly continued. While a few notable competitors made big finishes piloting Pure Zoodiac decks with no Speedroid engine and no Norden, it still seems the biggest Zoodiac decks of the June 12th Advanced Format will be True Draco variants, as popularized by Aaron Furman's win at YCS Pittsburgh.

But the weekend's already shown some other examples of True Draco dominance, like the reappearance of Demise True Draco as played to 4th Place at the Kissimmee Regional by Michael State really just one of the most consistent competitors of the past year. We saw Demise True Draco decks top a handful of Regionals when Maximum Crisis first debuted, but they quickly fell off the map when Pure Zoodiacs rallied. Now the strategy's suddenly back at the forefront of competitive conversation as we look to the new Format next week.

So get ready, because True Dracos took a lot of top spots this weekend from Friday to Monday. But in an intriguing swerve, the Phantasm Spiral Dragon hype made a resurgence as well, as the deck's key build-around spell saw a big surge of demand.

Let's get right to it.

#10: Heat Wave

Heat Wave was on a slow decline ever since it peaked at $12 a copy, a sudden spike that created the on-again off-again demand for everything Phantasm Spiral that played out across the last few weeks. Heat Wave itself never broke into the Top 10: the truth may never be known, but it certainly had all the hallmarks of a forced buyout engineered to create a price bubble, with the huge sales of cards like Phantasm Spiral Battle and Phantasm Spiral Dragon just being a side effect.

But now, with Heat Wave down lower than eight dollars, the card made a comeback over the weekend and narrowly managed to edge out Instant Fusion for the Number 10 spot. And while the average Market Price for Heat Wave is still under eight bucks, it's officially riding an upwards Price Trend; most copies were starting at nine dollars as of this writing.

#9: Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend

The first card so far to break into the Top 10 from Duelist Pack: Dimensional Guardians, Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend is a must-own even in times when it's not seeing much play. It's a game-winning card that everyone should at least have the option of playing.

Previously $3-$5 in its lowest rarities, the new Rare version of Scarlight can be had for under a dollar, and that made it an obvious pick-up for anyone who didn't already own one. Scarlight's seeing some tournament play in the OCG right now in things like Windwitch Spellbook variants, so it's smart to grab it now if you still need yours.

#8: Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter

Not only did Michael State top with a version of Demise True Dracos that mained three copies of Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter, we're starting to see it appear in True Draco Zoodiacs as well. Combine its rising popularity in the TCG with a huge week for True Dracos in logged OCG tournaments, and the Number 8 spot makes a lot of sense for a three-of Ultra Rare that's currently on a downward price trend and hugging the $2 mark.

#7: Pacifis, the Phantasm City

With surging demand for Heat Wave comes renewed demand for general Phantasm Spiral support. That placed three of the theme's biggest cards into the Top 10 this week, including the all-too-familiar Field Spell the deck hinges on.

#6: Phantasm Spiral Battle

Another previous hit from recent Market Watches, Phantasm Spiral Battle has the potential to be remarkable from-the-hand spot removal, provided you can keep Pacifis and a Normal Monster on the table to use it. The promise of its flexible problem solving might be one of the most attractive parts an otherwise dubious prospect.

#5: Phantasm Spiral Dragon

And finally, the must-run center of the Phantasm Spiral strategy continued to be one of the biggest sellers for the strategy. Note that while Pacifis, the Phantasm City and Phantasm Spiral Battle were both on slightly upward Price Trends, Spiral Dragon has yet to see any notable rise.

#4: True Draco Heritage

By now you probably know that True Draco Heritage is a one-of in True Draco Zoodiacs and a three-of in more dedicated True Draco builds. With TCG and OCG momentum backing the True Draco theme in general, it was a hot pick this week.

#3: True King's Return

The exact same things can be said about True King's Return, with both Return and Heritage achieving one-of status in Zoodiac variants; played as three-ofs in Demise True Dracos; and offering similar forms of Tribute support and spot removal. It's really interesting to see both cards climbing so high in the bestseller charts this week: it may suggest a building enthusiasm for dedicated Card of Demise variants moreso than the Zoodiac builds that only run one each of Heritage and Return.

Or, it could just be a ton of people wanting to play True Draco Zoodiacs.

Or, pure market speculation from people who want money. Both cards are powerful Ultra Rares currently on downward Price Trends, which might've made them attractive to collectors and sellers looking to invest as the new format gets closer and closer. You only have to look as far as cards like Sage with Eyes of Blue to see what can happen to the value of a three-of Ultra Rare given the right situation.

#2: Chaos Ancient Gear Giant

No idea. Anybody got anything? Is there an upcoming release that's somehow in a blindspot for me? We've seen the 2017 Ancient Gear cards in Market Watch Top 10's quite a bit, but that trend faded roughly a month ago. I'm not sure why Chaos Ancient Gear Giant would Rebound so hard while nothing else from the Ancient Gear theme charted.

#1: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

And finally, our Number 1 seller from last week kept that status through the weekend, as True King Lithosagym, the Disaster took another Number 1. Easily the biggest card of 2016 so far, the lynchpin for the troubled True King Dinosaur deck continues to move in huge numbers. Get ready to see a lot of Dinos, at least at the beginning new Advanced Format.

Will the deck succeed without Speedroids and Elder Entity Norden around? That's totally up in the air, but you can be sure a lot of players are going to try the deck to find out.
