Market Watch Top 10: The New Format Fallout

Welcome to the first Market Watch following the inaugural weekend of the new format!

It was an interesting weekend for Yu-Gi-Oh. It was the first round of competition in the new June 12th format, though the Regional season was virtually over a week and a half ago; there was only one Regional Qualifier left, which was held in Rosemont Illinois just outside of Chicago. And while we've seen a couple of deck lists from that event, as well as some cool strategies from a CTS tournament in Norway, the defining event of the week was the ARG Circuit Series tournament in Atlanta.

Since the Top 16 lists were published swiftly after that event's conclusion, it kicked off a flurry of action in the TCGplayer Marketplace, including at least one giant buyout that was the top news of the weekend. Pure Zoodiacs took nine seats in the Top 16; True Draco Zoodiacs took five; and the remaining two slots in the Top Cut went to a Kaiju Zoodiac deck and Patrick Hoban's True King True Draco Zoodiac variant.

The result was a continuation of the True Draco sales trends we've seen recently, a resurgence of interest in Kaijus, and a strong push for some big tech cards. Those tournament-level forces managed to create a largely competitive Top 10 this week, and after a big showing from Phantasm Spirals in our last Market Watch, we saw only two cards from the theme in the Top 10, even as Heat Wave remained on a gently upward Price Trend.

With no further ado, let's look at the first Top 10 countdown of the post-June 12th season.

#10: Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter

Slipping from the Number 6 position last week, Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter held the Number 10 spot. While Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King has largely been too expensive to outsell more approachable cards, his posse's been trading off spots in the Top 10 for weeks, as Dinomight Knight, True Draco Heritage, and True King's Return continue to be some of the most consistently demanded cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

While we haven't seen much more use of Dinomight Knight in regular True Draco Zoodiac builds it's usually played in just Demise True Dracos it's still a huge card right now, especially as it's price is on a slight decline.

#9: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

While True King Dinosaurs have yet to appear in a Top Cut in the new format, Pat Hoban's True King Draco Zoodiacs ran two copies of True King Lithosagym, the Disaster. It's impossible to tell whether the Number 9 placement for the Disaster was a function of that. or a reflection of high hopes for Dinosaurs, but both factors were likely responsible to some degree.

Will we see players mimic Hoban's techniques as they have in the past? Probably not it's a very specific deck that only got him a Top 8 finish. But it's possible, and lots of players own the cards needed to take a run at it.

#8: Interrupted Kaiju Slumber

Seven competitors in the Top 16 of the ARGCS Main Decked at least one Kaiju, and Mark Myatt finished Top 4 with a dedicated engine featuring Interrupted Kaiju Slumber mained. Five more Top 16 finishers sided Kaijus as well. With Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King so popular, and other big boss monsters potentially seeing more play in the new format, Kaijus are even bigger than they were before.

The result was big demand for what's historically been one of the bestselling cards in the secondary market since its release, and a lot of forward momentum for Kaijus. Expect to see Kaijus everywhere for at least the first couple of weeks in this format, running well into the America and European WCQ's. A lot of the purchases in this period of the year are being made by returning players getting ready for their WCQ tournaments, so these sales trends likely correlate directly to high end competition, even moreso than usual.

#7: True Draco Heritage

Played in both True Draco Zoodiacs and Demise True Dracos, True Draco Heritage was up one spot from its Number 8 placement last week. Its price has remained consistent despite the sustained demand and its Ultra Rare status, and that level of accessibility has kept demand strong as a result.

#6: Set Rotation

A lot of big tech picks from ARGCS Atlanta made an impact on the secondary market this week, and Set Rotation was one of them. The only competitor in the Top 16 who played it was Patrick Hoban, but he's one of the biggest names in the game and whenever he does things differently people take note.

Set Rotation's a Short Print Common in Maximum Crisis, and while there's lots of them floating around the TCGplayer Marketplace right now, its average Market Price is already pushing a dollar. We've seen big Short Prints climb to ridiculous heights in the past cards like Vanity's Emptiness come to mind, which at one point cost more than fifteen bucks.

As far as we've seen Set Rotation's nearly a three-of must-run in most OCG metagames, and it's played specifically to beat Dragonic Diagram. With True Draco Zoodiacs hitting the ground running in the new format, the surging demand for it is understandable. It's bolstered by the reprint of Oracle of Zefra that was revealed for Pendulum Evolution, too, since the two cards are often played together to lock your opponent with a Field Spell they can't flip or replace.

While Oracle was nearly eleven dollars last week, it's now available for three to four bucks less in advance of its reprint. Expect it to continue slipping; welcome relief as the only alternative, Gateway to Chaos, was climbing into the mid teens. It's all good news for Set Rotation, and if you don't own yours now, you should probably grab them while they're still $2.50 per playset.

#5: True King's Return

While True King's Return was Number 10 on Friday, it was the most-purchased True Draco card over the weekend. The precise specifics are probably meaningless, but as long as all three of the big True Draco cards remain in high demand, we can draw simple conclusions about competition moving forward.

#3: Pacifis, the Phantasm City

Demand for Pacifis, the Phantasm City still remained strong despite the Phantasm Spiral's continued lack of success, and its price point remains consistent at around a quarter. It's possible demand for these cards may continue as long as Heat Wave remains inflated.

#2: Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit

Every competitor in the Top 16 of the ARGCS mained Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and only one of them mained two copies instead of three. All of the Top 8 decks we've seen from the Rosemont Regional so far played three copies as well. While there was some debate about the card's future in this format, it appears to be an absolute staple heading into WCQ's.

#1: Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries

Perhaps more surprising, Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries was really big at the ARGCS. Willie Newsome and Mark Myatt both sided three copies in the Top 4, as did runner-up Daniel Cunningham. Justin Singh won the event with two Ghost Reapers mained plus one more sided, and it was all over the rest of the Top 16.

There's some expectation right now that Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries won't be reprinted in the 2017 Mega-Packs in August, and combined with the card's strong potential after the introduction of Link Summoning, it seems like a really safe buy. It sold out instantly coming off the huge performance at the ARGCS, and its starting price is now $20 a copy.

It's not often that we see a Secret Rare top the sales charts, but it happened this weekend, and it's very likely that Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries will be regarded as a must-run for WCQ's.

What else was big the last four days? We saw really big niche sales of Phantasm Spiral Battle, Phantasm Spiral Power, and Phantasm Spiral Dragon, as a very small group of buyers stocked up. We also saw similar demand for SPYRAL Gear Drone, which is more unexpected. Might we see big things from SPYRALS moving forward? It's definitely something to keep an eye on.

Twin Twisters, Instant Fusion, and Dragonic Diagram all showed strong numbers the past four days, and while Diagram's an obvious pick, the continued demand for Twin Twisters and Instant Fusion seems like actionable information. They're both flexible cards, and if you know to expect them you can make better educated reads on your opponent's possible moves.

That's it for now, but we'll be back Friday with another Market Watch Top 10 for the new format. See you then!
