Market Watch Top 10: Suddenly, the Invoked

The Yugiverse has had some time to breathe and reflect after the first tournament weekend of the new format!

WCQ's are set to kick off with the Central American Qualifier beginning tomorrow, in Mexico City. From there we'll see the South American WCQ one weekend later, and the North Amerian WCQ arrives on week after that. In our last Market Watch we saw players flock to True Dracos, Kaijus, and Phantasm Spirals, with tech cards like Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries, and Set Rotation proving to be huge sellers.

As the week settled we saw a bit of a shakeup amongst those tech cards; continued sales for Phantasm Spirals; some easing off from True Dracos; a sudden upswing for the Invoked; and a big Rebound for the biggest card of the year.

This is our Friday Market Watch, where we count down the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer Marketplace. Since the Marketplace is a gateway to over 1000 active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers at any given time, it generates a huge amount of sales data that can give you powerful insight into player responses to new products, overseas announcements, and shifts in tournament competition. Since we focus on all cards equally and judge the Top 10 by sheer volume of cards sold instead of rarity or card value, we can get at information you wouldn't be able to se if you were just hunting for price spikes on your own.

So let's look at the bestselling cards of the week from Monday to Friday, as tournament results from the new format went from breaking news to common knowledge.

#10: Phantasm Spiral Dragon

Phantasm Spirals were still inexplicably hot this week, once again taking four spots in the Top 10. Several of those cards are currently available at best prices that exceed their previous average Market Prices by a few cents, but only one of them is formally on an upward Price Trend. Phantasm Spiral Dragon wasn't it, despite the card's status as a three-of at the center of the strategy.

Heat Wave is still above $11 when it's available, and at this moment it's currently sold out. We didn't see any notable tournament results out of Phantasm Spiral decks this past weekend, so the trend still continues to look as if it was manufactured.

#9: Invoked Raidjin

More interesting from a competitive point of view, three Invoked cards cracked the Top 10 this week, starting with one of the theme's most powerful Fusions: Invoked Raidjin. Usually the only Invoked Fusion played in multiples aside from Invoked Mechaba, Raidjin's a 2200 ATK Book of Moon on legs that pairs well with the Windwitch theme. While we haven't seen that mashup make many Top Cuts lately, Johnathan Gochenour did make a Top 8 with it at the Virginia Regional towards the end of the last format, generating some discussion about the strategy's potential moving forward.

#8: Phantasm Spiral Crash

Aside from the usual stream of casual-minded Yugitube content, the only real mention of Phantasm Spirals came from a logged 1st Place deck from an OCG local last week, as logged by our friends over at The Organization. But that tournament was literally only five players, so the success of one Phantasm Spiral Frog Paleozoic deck there should be taken in the appropriate context.

#7: Aleister the Invoker

Still readily available for less than a dollar, Aleister the Invoker is hugging the cusp of a gentle upward Price Trend that's easily understood. The Invoked Windwitch deck and its newer variants have been a staple of tournaments in the OCG for months, and the Invoked engine is efficient enough to reemerge in competition now that Zoodiacs took a bit of a nerf off the new F&L List. Aleister remains a tremendously flexible card.

Unleashing an adaptive range of Fusion monsters from an Extra Deck toolbox, Aleister the Invoker's especially good in the early days of a new format that might not be entirely solved just yet. If you're going to a WCQ and looking to up your level of risk for greater rewards and a surprise factor, the Invoked engine's worth looking at.

#6: Phantasm Spiral Battle

Solidly up from its previous Market Price over the weekend, Phantasm Spiral Battle is pushing 50 cents in the TCGplayer Marketplace and officially on an upward Price Trend. It's been a while since we've seen that kind of sustained action for a Phantasm Spiral card, and we've talked before about how the removal power of Spiral Battle is really one of the biggest strengths of the theme. It's clearly still garnering player attention despite weeks of no real tournament results.

#5: Magical Meltdown

The last of the three Invoked cards in the Top 10 this week, Magical Meltdown came in at Number 5. The card's value has been an up-and-down ride lately, but at an average Market Price hovering around $1.25 it's still attractively affordable. If Invoked wind up seeing the same volume of play here as in the OCG it could become a much higher priority card for collectors, though we're reaching the point of the year where WCQ's start finishing and competitive cards flatten out as people take a bit of a break.

That said, you really can't go wrong picking up a playset at Meltdown's current price. It's unlikely to go any lower, and if it does, the difference is going to be a matter of pennies and nickels.

#4: Quaking Mirror Force

While Set Rotation and Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries are gone from the Top 10 just days after their surge on the salescharts, Quaking Mirror Force has arrived to fill the gap. While it didn't make any impact in the Top 16 at ARGCS Atlanta, Adrian Gonzalez played two copies in his Pure Zoodiac build at the final Regional Qualifier of the season and made Top 8, while the winning Dinomist deck from the CTS tournament in Norway played a full three copies.

The reason? Quaking Mirror Force has always seen some play for its ability to function as non-targeting non-destructive removal, addressing multiple threats in a fashion that keeps those cards from ever impacting the game again. While it requires specific timing and won't earn immediate card advantage, it can free you up from controlling monster effects, which is a pretty big deal right now. But more than that, it's a good choice in this moment because it outplays one of the biggest skill-driven cards in the Pure Zoodiac and True Draco Zoodiac matchups: My Body as a Shield.

While Quaking was reprinted in Dinosmasher's Fury, it's been steady at $3.50 to $4.00 since the Structure Deck debuted, and both the common and Ultra Rare are nearly sold out. I think we can expect this card to spike in value really soon.

#2: Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit

Also keeping its spot, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit is back at Number 2! At this point it's safe to say that based on tournament results and the sustained sales numbers, you should expect competitive players to be maining three copies in everything but Card of Demise decks. Even then, it's going to come in from the Side Deck quite a bit.

#1: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

And finally, True King Lithosagym, the Disaster is back on top! After sliding all the way to Number 9 over the weekend, demand surged for the Disaster in the wake of Patrick Hoban's use of it in True Draco Zoodiacs at the ARGCS in Atlanta. His Top 8 finish there might be the biggest reason for renewed interest in the card, but at the same time Nine Pillars of Yang Zing was actually the 13th most sold card in the Marketplace this week.

We could see more players banking on Yang Zing True King Dinosaurs as a dark horse pick heading into WCQ's. Again, it's really important when you're entering a tournament that large to be doing something different to set your strategy apart and find unique advantages.

True Dracos slid from the Top 10 entirely, but True Draco Heritage still clocked in at Number 11. Forbidden Chalice took the Number 12 spot too, and as one of the most popular tech choices in Zoodiac variants, it's clearly not disappearing from tournament competition any time soon.

That's it for this week, but we'll be back on Monday to report on any early impacts from the Central American WCQ. See you in four days!
