Happy 4th of July, Happy Canada Day, and happy Market Watch Monday!

We're still waiting on the majority of the results from the South American and Oceanic World Championship Qualifiers this weekend, but the numbers are in for the bestselling cards of the weekend. Pendulum Magicians from Pendulum Evolution continued to be the biggest buys of the weekend, though we saw a few interesting trends amongst those cards. At the same time, one current trend was reaffirmed just in time for you to be on the lookout for it at the North American World Championship Qualifier this weekend.

What was that card? Let's jump right to it, as we kick off the second to last Top 10 countdown before the WCQ.

#10: Forbidden Chalice

For the first time in a long time, the steady demand for Forbidden Chalice reached the point that Chalice returned to the Top 10 – if only barely. As Zoodiac mirror matches have come to occupy more and more of the field, Forbidden Chalice has become increasingly popular, and after so many strong showings across different WCQ's, demands for Pure Zoodiac's biggest tech cards has reached an all-time high.

While My Body as a Shield has seen significantly more play in recent events than Chalice, the sudden upswing in sales this past weekend suggests we may see more Chalice at the North American WCQ, as players continue to place more priority on Turn 2 resilience over a Turn 1 power ceiling. How MUCH more Chalice will we see? That's anybody's guess. But the emphasis on Forbidden Chalice may indicate more than just a one-card trend, as attitudes and imperatives shift.

Some duelists were clearly playing more for the games where they'd go second than ones where they'd go first in recent WCQ's, especially in the European Qualifier, and those players were often the most successful competitors of the weekend. That mindset is clearly being acknowledged, and is likely the best way to approach the NA WCQ. Awareness of that shift is going to be valuable moving forward.

#9: Time Pendulumgraph

While the trap Pendulumgraph may be less important than its spell card brother, it's still raking in sales in the TCGplayer Marketplace. The fact that minor one-ofs for an as-of-yet unproven strategy continue to outsell everything else in the game is one part testament to the appeal of Pendulum Evolution at a time when the biggest decks may be just weeks away from an F&L banhammering, and one part proof that players lock up at this time of the year, as the market slows down and everybody holds their breath for the next F&L List.

#8: White Wing Magician

Speaking of competitively unproven cards, White Wing Magician has yet to make a Top Cut appearance as far as I'm aware of, but it was back in the Top 10 over the weekend. The odd duck out from the new Level 4 Pendulum Magicians, White Wing lacks the self-replacing monster effect that makes the others so good, and its Pendulum Effect is comparatively low impact. It's a Tuner, but it's not the Tuner you want to be playing, and I'm surprised it's still popping up in the Top 10.

#7: Star Pendulumgraph

We've spoken before of how Star Pendulumgraph is the better of the two Pendulumgraph cards, searchable with Duelist Alliance and Double Iris Magician and then offering more search power almost immediately. The fact that its effect doubles over White Wing Magician's protection ability is another kick in the teeth to that card, since Star Pendulumgraph is effectively a must-run that's playable in multiples, balancing its own card economy before earning you card advantage turn after turn… And White Wing Magician is a subpar card you'd rarely if ever burn a fetch effect on.

The deck just isn't that desperate for another low Scale, with Purple Poison Magician and Astrograph Magician towing the line.

#6: Timestar Magician

A 2400 ATK double Stratos, Timestar Magician's not the be-all end-all for the Rank 4 focused versions of Pendulum Magicians, but it's a strong means to an end. It's a solid body that thins your deck and arms you with more card economy, forcing action from your opponent while actively protecting the cards they're trying to press through. It's a lightning rod for attacks in several ways, a hand fixer, and a combo building powerhouse.

While we've seen Timestar played as a singleton, we've also seen multiple copies in the Extra Deck, and arguments can be made for both approaches. It's especially good with Astrograph Sorcerer builds, ensuring that you see your Rank 7 anchor.

#5: Black Fang Magician

I'm still kind of surprised Marvin Schmidt cut this thing to two in his WCQ-topping build. Black Fang Magician's got great ATK for the theme and a powerful recursive effect. That said, it competes for deck space with the other high Scale Magicians, and its Pendulum Effect is more dependent on your opponent's field. At the end of the day we can only speculate why Schmidt opted to play two Black Fangs instead of three, but there are several sensible reasons one could point to.

#4: Purple Poison Magician

The Pendulum Magician deck's most common low Scale, Purple Poison Magician's Pendulum Effect is the kind of thing that builds win scenarios, and its Monster Effect is problem-solving spot removal. It's a really powerful card for the theme that deserves the continued enthusiasm it's seen in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

#3: Astrograph Sorcerer

So far we've seen one major build of Pendulum Magicians that runs Astrograph Sorcerer, and one that ignored it entirely. We don't have any idea which of those strategies was the correct one, and as a result we've seen Astrograph bounce around the sales charts quite a bit: from the Number 1 hottest position, down to Number 7 and then back to Number 3 this weekend.

An easy Special Summon as a contingency card, you can search Astrograph Sorcerer to shape your opponent's plays: they don't really want to see it on the field without making you work for it, and they don't want to see you score a free search with its ability either. As a Pendulum Summon it opens up plays for Rank 7's, and it's even a low Scale when you're desperate. You complicate the deck by running it, but it raises the strategy's power ceiling in return.

Monster Effect : If a card(s) you control is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can Special Summon this card from your hand, then you can choose 1 monster in the Graveyard, Extra Deck, or that is banished, and that was destroyed this turn, and add 1 monster with the same name from your Deck to your hand. You can banish this card you control, plus 4 monsters from your hand, field, and/or Graveyard (1 each with "Pendulum Dragon", "Xyz Dragon", "Synchro Dragon", and "Fusion Dragon" in their names); Special Summon 1 "Supreme King Z-ARC" from your Extra Deck. #2: Double Iris Magician

Up from Number 4 last week, Double Iris Magician is arguably the best of the new Pendulum Magicians from the “I have a valuable effect when I'm destroyed” family, searching a Pendulumgraph from your deck. It's got a respectable 1500 ATK and its damage doubling ability helps press wins over troublesome monsters. There's not much to say here: Double Iris is a relatively simple card that's obviously useful for the theme.

#1: Harmonizing Magician

And finally, Harmonizing Magician came out on top over the weekend! That's a bit surprising since the card debuted at Number 3 and then fell to Number 6 last week, but like we said before, its ability to bring a flexible Synchro toolbox to the Pendulum Magician strategy really makes it a star.

A reusable Pendulum Tuner is something we all kind of dreamed about when Pendulum Summoning was first revealed, but it rarely ever materialized: there are only six Pendulum Tuners total, and three of them belong to the Pendulum Magician theme (where Harmonizing Magician outclasses White Wing Magician and Nobledragon Magician). Meanwhile Speedroid Domino Butterfly has yet to be played, and D/D Orthros has only seen minimal table time. Until now, the only successful card of the bunch was Luster Pendulum, the Dracoslayer, which Pendulum Magicians can also run.

The appeal to Harmonizing Magician is clear, and while it's no sure thing that future Pendulum Magician builds will focus on it, the Top Cut versions we saw at the European WCQ both sought to make the most of it – even though Marvin Schmidt's version de-emphasized it a bit. It's a promising card that might've been a bit underappreciated in the early days of PEVO's release.

What else was hot over the weekend? Duelist Alliance climbed the charts again, this time hitting Number 11; impressive for a Secret Rare. That demand sent the card from an average Market Price of nine dollars into sold out status, with the only available copies as of this writing breaking the $30 mark in the Marketplace.

Meanwhile Windwitch - Winter Bell took the Number 12 spot as Windwitches continue to see play in the OCG, and Wisdom-Eye Magician clocked in at lucky Number 13 to close everything out.

That's it for the weekend, but we'll be back with one more Friday Market Watch before the North American WCQ closes out the 2016/2017 season.
