Welcome to the final Market Watch of the 2016/2017 season!

This weekend we'll see the final World Championship Qualifier play out in Chicago, as the year's best duelists from Canada and the United States duke it out at the North American WCQ. At the same time, today marks the release of Battles of Legend: Light's Revenge, bringing over thirty new cards and a ton of high profile reprints.

Despite Battles of Legend only releasing today, it's already made an impact on the Top 10 bestselling list. Meanwhile Pendulum Magicians tumbled a little but continued to be popular, and a sudden surge of interest in True Dracos shot three cards from the theme into the Top 10.

Remember, here in Market Watch we present the bestselling cards of the week to you based on sheer volume of sales; we don't go by price or rarity. You could always search the TCGplayer Marketplace yourself looking for price spikes and scoping out the top cards, but if you did, you'd miss a lot of info you can only find here: when lower value cards spike in demand they often won't rise notably in price, so we can use our behind-the-scenes insight to show you stuff you wouldn't be able to figure out on your own.

That was especially relevant this week, since some of the biggest trends this week were rooted in new cards that have yet to establish their value, and others that have been sitting on the cusp of price spikes for a while, but haven't quite made it there just yet.

Let's get into the numbers.

#10: Star Pendulumgraph

Time Pendulumgraph got knocked out of the Top 10, but the search-driven Star Pendulumgraph is still hanging tight at Number 10. That's not a surprise; its protective and replacing effects are huge, layering more resiliency onto a strategy that already has quite a bit of damage prevention, and then grabbing you replacement cards when those preventative effects fail.

#9: Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter

True Dracos saw a big final push heading into the North American WCQ, and Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter previously the bestselling card of the bunch came in at Number 9. It was actually outsold by two more monsters from the theme, probably just because it's the most expensive True Draco monster aside from the Secret Rare Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King.

With a boosted demand seemingly correlated to price, it's easy to guess that this trend was reflecting last minute speculation on the market value of True Draco cards leading into the WCQ. If True Dracos were to win this weekend, there would be an immediate payoff despite the rush of selling that generally happens in the wake of the Championship.

#6: Double Iris Magician

The ever-popular-at-three Double Iris Magician nearly led the pack once again, with its solid stats, damage boost, and superior search effect keeping it at Number 6. A three-of in all the successful builds of Pendulum Magicians we've seen so far, Double Iris Magician continues to see big demand.

#5: Galaxy Soldier

Transitioning off of Pendulum Evolution and into Battles of Legend: Light's Revenge, Galaxy Soldier turned out to be the most popular reprint of the set! Galaxy Soldier was well into the double digit price range before its reprinting was announced, but now that it's been reissued as an easier-to-crack Ultra Rare, it's now available for about $3.50.

Soldier's been a perennially useful card since it debuted, appearing in decks like Monarchs and ABC-Dragon Buster, and the latter could see play in the upcoming Link Summoning era it also made a slight impact during the WCQ season. It's been on lots of budget players' most-wanted lists for a long time, and now many of those duelists appear to have claimed their playset.

#4: Astrograph Sorcerer

The last Pendulum Evolution card on the Top 10 this week, Astrograph Sorcerer brings a wealth of abilities and assurances to the Pendulum Magician strategy. Helping the Magician player manage hand traps amongst other problems, we're starting to get a bigger picture of why it's so valuable to this strategy. If you haven't read it yet, check out Kelly Locke's awesome article today for some more info on how it works, and the wide coverage it lends to Pendulum Magicians.

There's more here than meets the eye, and it could be integral to the success of the Magician deck moving forward.

You can banish this card you control, plus 4 monsters from your hand, field, and/or Graveyard (1 each with "Pendulum Dragon", "Xyz Dragon", "Synchro Dragon", and "Fusion Dragon" in their names); Special Summon 1 "Supreme King Z-ARC" from your Extra Deck. #3: Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster

A one-of in Demise True Draco decks, Majesty Maiden's a very specific card for a very specific deck And that didn't stop it from selling in huge numbers all week long. Currently the most affordable of the True Draco monsters that actually see play, its high numbers this week offered more proof that players are literally betting on True Dracos this weekend, in the most literal fashion possible, investing in the theme in hopes for a quick turnaround.

The strategy may gain some viability from Link Summons, but the timing of the trend seems to suggest that this is a market-driven speculation more than a glance ahead into the competitive future.

#2: Giant Rex

EASILY the most surprising entry into the Top 10 this week, Giant Rex's swift rise to the Number 2 spot suggests a continued interest in True King Dinosaurs, despite getting shut out of WCQ's. A free Special Summon when you banish it for Miscellaneousaurus, Ultimate Conductor Tyranno, or the new Double Evolution Pill, it's a field-clearing powerhouse or instant fodder for a Rank 4 or a Synchro Summon. The Dinosaur strategy has run into some big challenges of consistency challenges that have kept it out of the competitive spotlight for several weeks now but Giant Rex manages to raise the deck's power ceiling without doing much to raise your risk level.

Worst case scenario it's a Level 4 with 2000 ATK that can't make direct attacks, and that's certainly not a death sentence. I'm really interested to see if it becomes a repeatedly in-demand card. It's really affordable for the moment, but it IS on an upward Price Trend as of this writing. It's seeing some notable play in Japan these days, and you can check that out by looking at recent deck lists from our friends at The Organization, though it seems to be far from staple status for now.

#1: Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior

And finally, a smaller subset of buyers were so enthused about Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior, that they bought enough copies to make it the Number 1 biggest card of the week! Ignis Heat's not even played in all builds of Demise True Draco as we've seen them in Regionals and WCQ's.

Like Giant Rex does for Dinosaurs, Ignis Heat helps True Dracos build more momentum for lower than average risk; we've seen the results of that, as Spellbook True Draco and Metal Zefra decks exploded earlier this week running multiple copies.

And that's the Top 10! But what else was big this week, especially from Battles of Legend? Anti-Spell Fragrance took Number 12, continuing to remain viable as an answer to True Dracos and Pendulums. Denko Sekka clocked in at Number 16, now far more affordable thanks to its reprint, and PSY-Framelord Omega was nearly as popular for the same reason at Number 19.

Battles of Legend is the release that everyone hoped Dimensional Guardians and Duelist Saga would've been. Loaded with killer reprints and presenting plenty of cool new cards, it's earned a lot of goodwill and praise from discerning Duelists.

And that's it for the week! If you're heading to the North American WCQ this weekend, then good luck in the competition. We'll be back on Monday to see the fallout once the results are in.
