Market Watch: Lightsworn And Link Monsters

Welcome to another Monday Market Watch! Last week saw some shakeups in the TCGplayer Marketplace with the arrival of Starter Deck: Link Strike and some big reveals from Code of the Duelist. That led to an uptick in demand for Spellbooks, Link support, and cards that work with the new Vendread theme.

We saw similar action over the weekend, but as more players picked up their Link Monsters the emphasis shifted toward Link Summoning. There was also a resurgence of demand for Lightsworn cards, similar to what we saw right out of the gates when those cards were all reprinted in Battles of Legend: Light's Revenge.

What were the biggest sellers in the TCGplayer Marketplace from Friday to Monday morning? Let's count 'em down and find out.

#10: Anti-Spell Fragrance

Hugely popular in competition this year, Anti-Spell Fragrance was one of the biggest sellers from BLLR thanks to its price point: previously a $10+ card that often topped the $20 mark, Anti-Spell Fragrance got flattened into casual and budget territory by Battles of Legend. It was Number 7 last week, and it fell a few slots to Number 10 as Lightsworn and Link Monsters pushed it down.

#9: Spellbook of Secrets

Last week's Code of the Duelist spoilers revealed that the long-awaited Spellbook of Knowledge is an Ultra Rare in its TCG release, and should be pretty accessible as a result. In the OCG, Knowledge is the core of a new draw engine that's been really big in tournaments, spiking recent demand for Spellbook Magician of Prophecy and this card, Spellbook of Secrets. Together they bear a striking resemblance to Pot of Greed, and the reprinting of both Magician and Secrets has kept them approachable.

It was a smart move by Konami to reprint these, making Spellbook of Knowledge as accessible as possible to move new cards and keep players happy. It's a win-win, and the demand for Spellbook of Secrets demonstrates that players are taking KDE up on it.

#8: Pre-Preparation of Rites

The bestselling card of 2016 returned to the Number 1 spot last week off the reveal of Revendread Origin and Revendread Slayer, key cards for the new World Premier Vendread theme. Since Origin's effect text mentions Slayer, Pre-Preparation of Rites works with both cards, and that sparked instant interest in both the theme and Pre-Prep. Demand held over the weekend, though that initial push died down over time.

#7: Solar Recharge

Freshly reprinted in Battles of Legend, Solar Recharge is in demand once again as the Twilightsworn monsters were revealed to be approachable in rarity. That's the likely explanation for the resurgence we saw from Friday onward, a trend that first started the day those spoilers emerged.

#6: Linkslayer

Linkslayer's a pretty awesome card. A Special Summon for 2000 ATK with no associated cost is immediately notable as a damage-dealing combo extender; the kind of card that pushes big plays into win scenario territory. But the fact that it's also a Mystical Space Typhoon or Twin Twisters on legs, and you get to CHOOSE which one you want it to be, makes it a deeply promising card.

Add the fact that Vendreads will probably end up running lots of monsters with powerful effects in the graveyard, like Mezuki and Vendread Houndhorde, and suddenly a very flexible card has a potential place in immediate competition. Even Linkslayer's Level of 5 can play to your advantage, making it valuable Synchro Summon fodder or even an Xyz enabler.

While Linkslayer would've been even better as a Level 4, it's still really solid. Those factors all combine to push it into the Number 6 position over the weekend.

#5: Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio

Link Summoning is finally here, which means all those crazy combos featuring Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio are right around the corner. We can definitely expect at least some players to try and craft dedicated combo decks once cards like Firewall Dragon arrive in Code of the Duelist, and that's going to make Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio an even bigger card than it is already.

#4: Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn

Arguably the most important Lightsworn of the bunch, Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn leapt back up the salescharts this weekend as demand continued to surge in anticipation of the Twilightsworns. We've talked about Raiden several times over the past weeks, and it's not very complicated: a searchable Level 4 Tuner with solid ATK and two milling effects? Yes please.

#3: Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow

Down from Number 2 on Friday, Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow remained hugely popular over the weekend. The ability to throw down a Level 5 Tuner and some free Link Materials is massive, and Gofu's clearly going to see a lot of play in August.

#2: Link Spider

No surprise here, as the Top 2 bestselling cards this weekend were the two competitive Link Monsters from Starter Deck: Link Strike. Not owning Link Spider isn't really an option; it's an incredibly basic, easy to play Link that has important roles in competition moving forward. All you have to do is take a look at recent logs of tournaments in the OCG to see how popular this thing is.

#1: Decode Talker

Decode Talker, also not optional, actually sees even more play than Link Spider.

Another super-easy Link Summon, Decode follows cards like Leviair the Sea Dragon and Stardust Dragon cards that were designed to debut a new Summoning mechanic, and that offered an enticing return on your investment to get that mechanic off the ground and into competition.

If anything else was Number 1 this weekend I think it would've been an upset.

Beyond the Top 10, PSY-Framelord Omega continued its run as an immensely popular card in the wake of its recent reprint, clocking in at Number 11. Wulf, Lightsworn Beast followed hot on the heels of Raiden at Number 12, and Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner came in at 14. Sage with Eyes of Blue took lucky Number 13, and Time Maiden surged back up the charts to land at Number 15.

That's all for today, but I got say: I'm really looking forward to our Friday Market Watch. There, we'll see if the interest in Link Monsters, Spellbooks, and Vendreads holds up, and we may see more sudden responses to incoming cards from Code of the Duelist, like how Lightsworn suddenly came into big demand again this weekend.

Join us then, and stick with us for the rest of the week here on TCGplayer, as we'll be talking about our reactions to Link Summoning all week long.
