Market Watch Top 10: Links, Lightsworn, and Surprises

Last week we saw an expected continuation of trends in the TCGplayer Marketplace: Link Monsters and supporting cards continued to be a huge factor in the secondary market with cards like Decode Talker, Link Spider, and Blackwing Gofu the Vague Shadow, while Spellbooks ended up reigning supreme, as Spellbook of Secrets nabbed the Number 1 spot.

We saw a sudden spike of demand for Dark Hole as well, which made sense as players continue to wonder if cards like Zoodiac Drident and Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King will survive the next F&L List whenever we see it. We also saw another surge of demand for Lightsworn. Of the big trends in the TCGplayer Marketplace following the North American WCQ, the popularity of Lightsworn has been the most inconsistent; some weeks they've scored as many as four spots in the Top 10, and other weeks they didn't make the cut at all.

The weekend sales period was much of the same, but with some surprise appearances from cards that haven't seen much recent demand. The previous trends are clearly still in action: there are no big tournaments mixing things up right now, and Code of the Duelist won't release until Friday; depending on when presales are available here on TCGplayer, COTD cards may not break into our Top 10 countdown until next Monday. But at the same time, some interesting singles made breakout showings that may make statements about player responses to Code of the Duelist, here in the final days leading up to its official launch.

In fact we can see that immediately in our Number 10 spot from the weekend. Let's get started.

Your opponent cannot target Spellcaster-Type monsters you control with Trap Cards or effects. You can only use the following effect of "Time Pendulumgraph" once per turn. You can target 1 "Magician" Pendulum Monster Card in your Monster Zone or Pendulum Zone, and 1 card your opponent controls; destroy them. Then, if this effect did not destroy 2 cards, you can send 1 card on the field to the Graveyard.

Pendulum Magicians were in almost shocking demand in the run-up to the final World Championship Qualifiers, but the deck largely failed to produce WCQ results, and the new Link Summoning ruleset is extremely harsh on Pendulum Summons. As it stands, very few players are placing their bets on any Pendulum themes in the coming months, especially one that never reached the levels of success shared by Metalfoes, Performapals, and decks like them.

So why did Time Pendulumgraph spike all the way to Number 10 this week? That's a good question, and it's particularly impressive since none of the accompanying Pendulum Magician monsters made the Top 10 with it. If you have theories or if you straight know the answer educate me down in the comments.

#9: Spellbook of Secrets

Down from Number 1 this past week, Spellbook of Secrets is the anchor to the new draw engine featuring Spellbook Magician of Prophecy and Spellbook of Knowledge.

Secrets was actually outpaced this weekend by the Magician, which we'll talk about a little later, despite the fact that both cards have similar price points. Perhaps the shift was just a bit of bounce back from so many players buying their copies last week. Regardless, both cards are on upward Price Trends right now despite solid supply in the Marketplace.

#8: Solar Recharge

Despite Top 10 appearances from Lumina and Felis last week, Solar Recharge didn't make the Top 10 on Friday. Now it's back outpacing Felis; that makes sense, since Recharge is a staple for the theme and players have often elected to skip Felis in competitive builds in the past. Recharge has been printed six times now, and it remains incredibly affordable for those who don't own it yet.

#7: Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit

Reappearing in the Top 10 after some time away, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit's sudden resurgence could be one of the biggest takeaways from our countdown this week. Sudden surges of interest in hand traps is always something we look for in our Market Watch analyses, since they generally forecast an upswing of use for that card in tournament competition.

But with no big tournaments for another few weeks, we're simply left to speculate about whether the enthusiasm now will translate into more use in the first 2018 Regional Qualifiers on August 19th, and YCS Toronto on the 26th. As hand traps go, Ghost Ogre's been second only to Maxx C over the past year with that card looking more and more like an undeniable candidate for Forbidden status, maybe Ghost Ogre's sudden swing is simply a response to the inevitable.

#6: Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner

Up from Number 9 last week, Lumina just seems to become even more popular the closer we get to the release of the Twilightsworns in Code of the Duelist. It's interesting to see the sheer driving nostalgia and enthusiasm for the theme; Twilightsworn accomplished almost nothing in the OCG, but they're probably the most-wanted cards from COTD at this point.

Whether that's fan enthusiasm or a competitive bet that the new F&L list will give Twilightsworn a push is up in the air. The latter certainly isn't impossible.

#5: Pot of Duality

Pot of Duality's largely played in decks that see significant spikes to their win ratio when they open with particular cards, and decks that can afford to skip their Special Summon especially on Turn 1. In the past that's largely made it a companion card to Card of Demise in dedicated True Draco builds,or anti-meta strategies. But nowadays it also sees play alongside the Spellbook of Knowledge draw engine, a trend that's been sort of under-discussed here in the TCG.

With Spellbook of Knowledge so hot right now, and Spellbook Magician of Prophecy and Spellbook of Secrets consistently topping the charts, it's not a big surprise to see Duality here. What's more surprising ins that it took so long to break into the Top 10.

#4: Spellbook Magician of Prophecy

The proximity of Pot of Duality and Spellbook Magician of Prophecy may work to confirm the relationship I just mentioned: players picking up one of the two right now are likely intending to play their purchase with the other, and many of those players are probably buying both at once so they can have the option to really commit to the Knowledge engine.

#3: Blackwing Gofu the Vague Shadow

And finally, the last three cards in the Top 10 over the weekend were all related to Link Summoning. Even as some players seem to be expressing mounting doubts about the success of Link Summoning in competition, the cards that are played with Link Monsters as well as Link Monsters themselves continue to lead the TCGplayer Marketplace in sales almost every week.

A versatile combo starter that offers everything from Synchro Summons to Ultimaya Tzolkin to free Link Spiders, Blackwing Gofu the Vague Shadow's the number one assisting card to Link Summons out of the gates, and the only thing that seems likely to knock it out of the Top 10 is the arrival of Code of the Duelist.

Even then, it may only be a matter of time until we see Gofu topping the charts again.

#2: Link Spider

As the single easiest Link Monster to Summon, the appeal of Link Spider's easy to understand; it's almost effortless to Summon since it works with Token Monsters, and it's a base building block of a lot of notable play sequences in the OCG. The same will likely be true stateside.

#1: Decode Talker

And finally, after taking a bit of a break to let Spellbook of Secrets borrow the Number 1 spot last week, Decode Talker was once again the bestselling card in the TCGplayer Marketplace. At some point everyone's going to own it and it'll drop off the radar, but for now its strong boosted stats, powerful negation effect, and easy Link Materials have continued to drive Link Summoning's credibility.

That's it for this week, but Code of the Duelist will hit presale status here on TCGplayer as early as Wednesday, which means we could see the first big hits from the set in our next Market Watch.

We'll be back for that on Friday to see if we get our first taste of COTD dominance, but until then, be sure to stick with us this week as we bring you more from Kelly Locke, Doug Zeeff, and Loukas Peterson, as well as a surprise guest writer fresh off the Top Cut at the North American WCQ.
