Welcome to the first Market Watch of the Code of the Duelist era!

…Sorta!

Code of the Duelist hit the TCGplayer Marketplace in preorders on Tuesday afternoon, but it always takes a while for sellers to begin listing cards. Compounding that, stock is always limited before a new set's full release – that's today – so it's important to consider this Top 10 Countdown in that context.

Ultra Rares and Secret Rares rarely make an early Top 10 due to limited quantities, so for now, we don't really know what the most popular cards from Code of the Duelist are. What we do know, are the cards that players immediately purchased as widespread priorities, out of the lower rarity cards that were more plentiful. That information's actually quite valuable, since those early must-haves are usually competitive cards you're going to see a lot of in the coming weeks, in part because they're so accessible that lots of players will try them out.

At the same time we also get to see one last glimpse of the cards players have been picking up pre-Code. By Monday it's almost guaranteed that the entire Top 10 and beyond will be Code of the Duelist cards, but the presale period gave us some interesting data to go out on. Link Monsters and Blackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow have been trending strongly the past several weeks, and that continued up to the big release.

Lightsworn were nowhere to be seen after a string of strong showings, while Spellbook Magician of Prophecy disappeared and Spellbook of Secrets nearly fell from the Top 10. Meanwhile a handful of cards we haven't seen here for a while were suddenly back in big demand. In fact, our first item on today's countdown was one of those on-again off-agains. Let's get to it.

#10: Forbidden Chalice

Forbidden Chalice has popped up on the salescharts a couple times since the North American WCQ. It was a hot pick heading into that event, but many who played it there found Chalice to be underwhelming.

Fast forward to Code of the Duelist and an era where more monsters than ever now have negation effects, protection, and controlling abilities, and it looks as if Chalice's stock may be on the rise. It's a sensible pick for dozens of different reasons, which puts it in direct contrast with the Number 9 bestseller for the week.

#9: White Wing Magician

I have zero idea why White Wing Magician is here.

Kelly Locke wrote a great piece this week discussing the possible survival of Pendulum strategies in the post-Link era, but White Wing Magician remains the one new Pendulum Magician that doesn't see competitive play, in large part because it offers no redemptive effect when it's destroyed. Am I missing something; does anyone know why this spiked?

#8: Spellbook of Secrets

Less mysterious: the continuing demand for Spellbook of Secrets. Spellbook of Knowledge is currently the most expensive Ultra Rare from Code of the Duelist at about ten dollars, and since it's run in threes it could easily become the most-played card of the release. It's a powerful draw engine with additional deck thinning, and to play it you need to run three copies of Secrets, which is the obvious reason for its recent and consistent demand.

#7: Transmodify

ABC-Dragon Buster's one of the most hyped strategies for the upcoming competitive season, and with Galaxy Soldier newly reprinted, we've seen on-and-off demand for Transmodify. It's also played in Stargrails in the OCG, so it's kind of impossible to tell if the surge of demand is representative of interest in ABC's, Stargrails, or both. The safe bet is ABC's, but if Stargrails sell well over the weekend it may be wise to study up in case they start appearing in tournaments.

We'll check back on that issue on Monday when we have more complete sales numbers from Code of the Duelist.

#6: Blackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow

A tremendous enabler for any Link Monster that uses non-effect monsters as Materials, Blackwing – Gofu the Vague Shadow has long been associated with Links ever since they were first revealed in the OCG. By now I'm sounding like a broken record: Gofu's sold in huge numbers for weeks now, and the only thing keeping it out of the Top 5 once again was the arrival of COTD.

You can banish this card and 1 or more face-up non-Tuners you control, then target 1 "Blackwing" Synchro Monster in your Graveyard whose Level equals the total Levels the banished monsters had on the field; Special Summon it, and if you do, it is treated as a Tuner.

#5: Back to the Front

And speaking of Code of the Duelist, our first big seller from the new set is Back to the Front! Effectively just a better Oasis of Dragon Souls, it revives a monster without placing any pressure on you to keep Back to the Front on the field. Since it can't be disrupted by spell and trap removal, it may even be better than Call Of The Haunted in strategies where immediate attack is less valued.

It's an incredibly promising card that boosts a variety of strategies, granting a bit of advantage to decks that need it, and bringing some variety to trap lineups. It's a great card, and buyers snapped it up by the bushel.

#4: Heavy Storm Duster

Code of the Duelist's answer to Twin Twisters sold even better than Back to the Front. While Twin Twisters is faster since it doesn't need to be set, Heavy Storm Duster offers better card economy by destroying up to two cards for one, and its restriction on your Battle Phase doesn't matter if you're activating it on your opponent's turn. Which you almost always will, since you can't activate it the turn you draw it in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, there's more nuance than just that. The comparison between Heavy Storm Duster and Twin Twisters is more complicated than it looks. But at its core, a simple +1 is always going to be a tantalizing prospect, and Heavy Storm Duster's sheer power level combined with its splashability pushed it to Number 4 right out of the gates.

#3: Decode Talker

Even with Code of the Duelist in the mix, Decode Talker and Link Spider are still the fundamental go-to Links, and that was reflected in the unstoppable demand for both cards. If anything, Decode Talker's now even more important as a gateway to bigger Link Summons, with Firewall Dragon and Topologic Bomber Dragon in the mix. It's a great card that just got even better.

#2: Terraforming

The gold standard of Field Spell search cards leapt all the way to Number 2 this week, and it's a little tricky to figure out why. On one hand, the release of Metaverse sparked more discussion of Field Spell strategies in general. On the other, new Fields like Trickstar Light Stage and World Legacy Discovery are high potential musts for their themes. And meanwhile a lot of players are going to be picking up Dracos and ABC's in the coming weeks, and they'll need to search Draconic Diagram and Union Hangar respectively.

Were those the chief reasons for Terraforming's sudden push to Number 2? I'm not sure that's the whole picture. There don't seem to be any relevant OCG reveals that could've sparked the trend, but if I missed something, feel welcome to shout it out in the comments.

#1: Link Spider

And finally, the Number 1 bestselling card of the week was Link Spider. Which by now probably shouldn't surprise you. Link Spider's incredibly easy to Summon, it helps turn Token Monsters into Link Materials for Link Monsters that demand Effect Monsters, and it's even an Earth monster for added combo potential. It's a definite must-own, and the real wonder is that there are still players who need to pick up their copies after weeks of this thing dominating the sales charts.

What else saw big sales from Code of the Duelist? Revendread Slayer came in at Number 12 and Revendread Origin clocked Number 15, confirming that the Vendread theme was as well received as it appeared to be. Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom took Number 16 as well.

Meanwhile Pot of Duality nearly made the Top 10 at Number 11, and Set Rotation was Number 13, reflecting more interest in Field Spells; and Ties of the Brethren rounded out the Top 20. The latter's an interesting pick that could be a response to a number of factors, including the hype surrounding Counter Fairies in the OCG this past week.

That's it for today, but join us on Monday when we'll see the weekend performance of Code of the Duelist, and we'll find out what cards were the bestsellers in the wake of the set's full release. See you then!
