Market Watch Top 10: Surprise Goukis!

The TCGplayer Marketplace has been in a state of ebb and flow since Code of the Duelist arrived, and as the competitive seasons ramps up toward Regional Qualifiers, we saw more of those patterns this past weekend.

On one hand, three cards have been defining picks from Code of the Duelist ever since the set dropped: Missus Radiant, Back to the Front, and Heavy Storm Duster have traded off spots in the Top 3 since the set's official debut, and they didn't slow down this past weekend. Those cards remain hot prospects for a huge number of strategies.

But demand for the rest of the set has shifted every few days. First we saw huge demand for Vendreads and a push for World Chalice monsters, spiking the price of World Chalice Guardragon and Lee the World Chalice Fairy. Vendreads were still a hot ticket, but they slumped a bit four days later, while Lightsworn, Trickstars, and new cards that have recently helped Pendulum Magicians compete in the OCG all made a rally.

This week the wheel has turned yet again. Generic, splashable cards that could be played in a wide array of strategies with or without a new F&L List dominated yet again, but the lower half of our Top 10 countdown was actually filled with Goukis: Trickstars, Vendreads, and Lightsworn largely disappeared from the best seller charts, though interest in World Chalice monsters was still strong.

That's a bit of a headscratcher, because while Trickstars and World Chalice have both put in some competitive showings and are good picks if a new Advanced Format shuts down True Dracos and Zoodiacs, Goukis aren't largely seen as a competitive theme. I think literally the only time I can remember seeing Goukis in a recent tournament was as a splashed suite of three cards feeding one Gouki Re-Match in an ABC-Dragon Buster build.

But, the Goukis were a compelling pick over the weekend anyways, even as we begin to see more discussion of World Chalice. The self-replacing effect of each core Gouki monster makes them prime fodder for Transmodify, and that card did see a ton of action in the run-up to Code of the Duelist. At the same time, their replacement abilities make for tantalizing card economy all around.

So with all of that in mind, what did the Marketplace look like from Friday to Monday? Here are the Top 10 bestsellers by sheer number of cards sold this weekend.

#10: Gouki Riscorpio

The Goukis took no fewer than four spots in the Top 10, starting with Gouki Riscorpio the biggest of the bunch and the toughest to Summon. At Level 5 with 2300 ATK, it's a solid attacker on its own but it's also a big risk; it can easily wind up a dead draw. For a theme that's largely focused on throwing away its monsters for Link Summons, it's surprising to see it in the Top 10.

#9: Gouki Re-Match

Gouki Re-Match is largely what makes Goukis so interesting, compensating for the Level split of the current monster lineup and giving you a quick 2-for-1 trade that can wall up, or feed your Extra Deck Summons. I think it's entirely fair to say it's the singular reason to give Goukis the time of day.

#8: Gouki Suprex

Next up, the Level 4 Gouki Suprex has a Marauding Captain type ability that can even out rough hands, get Riscorpio and Gouki Twistcobra onto the field, and load your graveyard early to bring Re-Match online, ensuring your Goukis get into play as fast as possible. With a respectable 1800 ATK and a valuable Level, it works really nicely with other forms of Extra Deck Summoning and it can hold its own in battle.

It's a nice card, and it works especially well with Re-Match and Twistcobra, which we'll talk about shortly bit.

#7: Ib the World Chalice Priestess

Before we get to that, Ib the World Chalice Priestess was the World Chalice it-card of the weekend, acting as both a potentially splashable Link Summon with useful Link Arrows, and a combo for destruction effects. Ib's a really solid card that can bridge some of your bigger plays, and as a Super Rare on a downward Price Trend it was an easy purchase to rationalize this weekend.

Meanwhile Imduk the World Chalice Dragon nearly made the Top 10 coming in at Number 12, and we saw World Chalice Guardragon and Lee the World Chalice Fairy both continue to hug the ten dollar mark.

#6: Gouki Twistcobra

Finally, Gouki Twistcobra was the sixth bestselling card in the TCGplayer Marketplace, offering a respectable 1600 ATK and a Quick Effect that wards off attacks, triggers your Gouki searches, and lets you swing over bigger monsters. It's effectively a backup plan in a strategy that's chiefly looking to make Link Summons, and while its effect isn't usually relevant when you're playing splashing Goukis as an engine, it works well with Gouki Re-Match and can throw some curveballs your opponent's way if they aren't familiar with it.

Twistcobra, Suprex, and Re-Match are the three cards that might appear in a splashed engine, so it makes sense to see them on the top of the Gouki heap. Gouki Great Ogre actually finished at Number 11 for the weekend too, which I'd also consider surprising.

#5: Link Spider

I don't think Link Spider's slipped from the top 10 since it arrived here in the TCG. Firmly acknowledged as the easiest Link to Summon and a necessary option for climbing into bigger Links, the Spider's fundamental with Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow, leading into plays for other Link Monsters like Decode Talker and Missus Radiant.

#4: Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow

Speak of the devil: Gofu remains one of the best reasons to play a bunch of Link Monsters right now, giving any Link deck extra opening plays that can carry you to a strong game position. In fact, it may be the single biggest reason to play Link Summoning strategies at upcoming Regionals if we don't see a new format drop.

Gofu's ability to open up multiple lines of play for just one card is reminiscent of Tour Guide From the Underworld and the pre-rules-clarification Reborn Tengu in the early days of Xyz Summoning, and that's made it a continually hot pick for aspiring Link duelists. If you're going to play Link Monsters you absolutely need to run Gofu, and that's placed it on a slightly upward Price Trend at a Market Price of nearly $1.50.

You can banish this card and 1 or more face-up non-Tuners you control, then target 1 "Blackwing" Synchro Monster in your Graveyard whose Level equals the total Levels the banished monsters had on the field; Special Summon it, and if you do, it is treated as a Tuner.

#3: Back to the Front

Down from the Number 1 spot last week, the new, compromising, better-card-economy version of Call Of The Haunted continues to stick the Top 3. Again, there's no real way to tell if the pace of play in the new Link era will allow a trap card like this to thrive, but lots of players are picking it up anyways just in case.

Back to the Front's an entirely superior version of a card that was once a tournament staple, and the value of recursion, defense, and free plusses against your opponent's removal could be a big deal moving forward. Note the upward price trend and the $1.60 average Market Price.

#2: Heavy Storm Duster

But of course, it's tougher for Back to the Front to draw out opposing removal cards at a profitable rate when your opponents are all running Heavy Storm Duster.

Effectively a delayed Mystical Space Typhoon or a free Twin Twisters, Heavy Storm Duster's nonexistent cost and incredible range against everything from heavy backrows and single floodgates, to more sketchy territory like Pendulum Scales and True Draco Continuous cards, has made it a huge pick in the face of an ambiguous competitive season.

While Duster's the same Market Price as Back to the Front, it's on a steep downward Price Trend as of this writing, despite being a Super Rare instead of a nonfoil.

#1: Missus Radiant

And finally, the one Link Monster to rule them all ascended once again to the Number 1 spot, as players prepare for Link impact this weekend. Those first Regional Qualifier deck lists are going to be in massive demand come Saturday night, and even as Missus Radiant trends downward in price in the TCGplayer Marketplace, it could easily see a bump over if Links outperform player expectations.

What else was big? SPYRAL Resort was a strong niche pick as players await the OCG release of SPYRAL Double Helix next month; we could see it as early as Circuit Breaker here in the TCG. Traptrix Mantis saw big demand from a narrow group of buyers as well.

Meanwhile we already talked about Gouki The Great Ogre at Number 11 and Imduk the World Chalice Dragon clocking in at Number 12, but we saw Decode Talker at Number 13; Lumina, Lightsworn Shaman back at Number 14; and Cyberse Wizard rounding out the sales charts at Number 15. Make of those what you will.

We'll have one more Market Watch for you this Friday, but after that we'll finally see new results from Regional Qualifiers! Keep an eye on the TCGplayer Deck Archive this weekend, because we'll be updating it as often as we can with the first Top Cut lists of the Link Summoning era.

See you on Friday!
