Market Watch Top 10: Competitive Cards Rally

After a weekend punctuated by big sales for casual and fan-driven picks in our Monday Market Watch , the week delivered a return to a more competitive norm.

Last weekend we saw high sales in the TCGplayer Marketplace for cards like The White Stone of Ancients, Starving Venom Fusion Dragon, and Dark Magical Circle – the latter being a consistent huge seller since its reprint in the 2017 Mega Pack. Flash forward four days, and the Dark Magician support continued strong through the Monday to Friday sales period, but everything else was more slanted toward competitive play.

If this is your first Market Watch column, a quick crash course! The TCGplayer Marketplace is a gateway to over a thousand active Yu-Gi-Oh! sellers, all competing to offer you the best prices on virtually every card in existence. That means we get a ton of traffic, and it lets us gather reams of data about which cards are selling the most by sheer volume. Not just the stuff you could see yourself – like which big cards are price spiking or which foils are worth the most – but more info about cards that might fly under the radar otherwise; stuff that can indicate big trends days or weeks before they happen.

When a big card at a high value gets even pricier, or sells out entirely, players notice. But when thousands of copies of a nonfoil card suddenly disappear because players are picking up the deck, that situation's a lot tougher to see. That's the kind of news we can bring you from behind the scenes.

With that in mind, let's count down the Top 10 bestselling cards in the TCGplayer marketplace this week!

#10: True King Lithosagym, the Disaster

True King Dinosaurs continue to put in enough Regional and YCS Top Cut showings to spark conversation, and while it's expected that the next F&L List might offer the deck a leg up in competition, the Link Summoning mechanic alone seems to be enough to get Dinos back into the tournament spotlight.

We've seen recent successes from Dinosaur decks with and without Yang Zings, with the additional backup seemingly more popular in North America than Europe, but the one constant is True Kings; and True King Lithosagym, the Disaster is by far the most important of the bunch, featuring as a three-of in pretty much every list. While the original printing from Raging Tempest has been a solid $2-$3 for the better part of the year, the reprint is about a buck, and it's not often such a powerful high-potential card is so readily available.

Someone in charge of these things decided True King Lithosagym, the Disaster was going to be a Super Rare despite the previous True Kings being Ultra Rares, and it remains one of the best choices in card rarity that we've seen in the past half decade. True King Lithosagym's one of the most popular cards in the game, and its accessible price has kept Dinosaurs in at least the background since the arrival of Dinosmasher's Fury.

#9: Missus Radiant

It's here almost every week, and every week we say the same thing: as long as Zoodiacs are at full power, Missus Radiant will be the single most relevant Link Monster in competition. Cheap, powerful, and a must-run in the biggest tournament strategy going, it's one of the few easy Link Monsters that actually does what players want, which is opening up more than one Main Monster Zone for Extra Deck summons.

With so many players taking a hiatus every year after the World Championship Qualifier, lots are returning and picking up their copies of Missus Radiant to get ready for the new format.

#8: Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries

Putting in some big showings the past few weeks, including a Top 4 finish at YCS Rimini , Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries has seen a bit of a resurgence. Falling from the double digit price range upon its reveal as a reprint in the Mega Packs, it's now available for less than five dollars, and it's a great time to pick up a playset before competition ramps up any more for the 2018 season.

It's always going to be relevant, and it probably won't get any cheaper than this. That was enough to push Ghost Reaper & Winter Cherries to the Number 8 spot this week.

#7: Magician Navigation

When giant fan-loved cards come crashing down from $25+ dollars to $5, tons of casual players and fans of the TV series come rushing in to snap up their copies, and that's what we've seen happen week in and week out since the reprinting of Magician Navigation.

#6: Dark Magical Circle

The same thing applies to Dark Magical Circle. Both cards are hugely desirable to fans of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series, both cards are worth running in a locals-level competitive Dark Magician deck, and both cards have been huge sellers since the 2017 Mega-Packs dropped them out of the stratosphere and into the budget range of more players.

The fact that Dark Magical Circle packs two effects that are smart on card economy and offer dual-pronged progression along your game plan is almost a bonus; the fan demand is huge, and the fact that it's actually a pretty good card has kept it just above Magician Navigation. We've really seen a shift the past couple of years into offering better design and card quality for these casual-centric themes, and it's been a really healthy change.

Dark Magician won't be winning a YCS any time soon, but the cards are far from bad, and players have responded accordingly.

#5: Dimensional Barrier

Down a spot from Number 4 last week, the story of Dimensional Barrier continues along the same lines: some players thought Link Summoning would kill its potential, those players were wrong largely because Zoodiacs have continued as the deck-to-beat, and sales have remained high as a result.

The seven dollar price points certainly helps a lot too. A lot of players who sold their copies before their WCQ are now buying them back at a fraction of what they sold them for.

#4: Heavy Storm Duster

Back in the Top 4 almost out of nowhere, Heavy Storm Duster is seeing more play in North America after an absolutely gangbusters showing at YCS Rimini. While Cosmic Cyclone was the removal card of choice in North America thanks to a general want to stomp on True Draco Continuous cards, keeping them out of the graveyard, the heavy use of Heavy Storm Duster in Europe seems to've inspired many players to take another look at the card stateside.

Offering easily some of the best card economy we've ever seen printed on a splashable generic spell or trap, Heavy Storm Duster's incredible in a vacuum and is proving to be better than some might have expected even in the current tournament environment.

#3: Decode Talker

Every week we see more and more Top Cut finishes from decks playing more and more Link Monsters, as slowly but surely the new themes and new cards are accepted by the player base at large. Decode Talker is a huge pick for its ease of summoning, its decent abilities, and its use in Link climbing into bigger cards, and that pushed it not just back into the Top 10 this week, but all the way to Number 3.

It's a turn of events that feels a lot more sensible than the Number 3 pick over the weekend, a momentary spike in demand for The White Stone of Ancients.

#2: Proxy Dragon

The remaining Top 2 in this week's bestseller list should be no surprise, as Proxy Dragon reprised its Number 2 finish from the weekend after being the Number 1 biggest card in the TCGplayer Marketplace the week before.

Link Monsters continue to be prove themselves as relevant even before a new F&L List, and Proxy Dragon's one of the best going. More than that, the card has obvious growth potential in terms of its on-table performance; it's persisted as a staple choice in the OCG, and very few cards are positioned to challenge its place as a general enabler.

It's cheap, it's good, and you wouldn't want to be caught without it. It's a safe buy as we wait to see the new format, and that's kept demand high.

#1: Pot of Desires

…But once again, Pot of Desires trumped Proxy Dragon! One of the most valuable cards of the past several years is now three bucks, thanks to a massive reprint that's kept it affordable in the face of utterly massive demand. Supply in the TCGplayer Marketplace is huge, but the sheer number of sales really shows no sign of slowing down.

Looking back on the card's mixed reception when it was released in The Dark Illusion, the level of denial about Pot of Desires' power level is kind of hilarious in retrospect. Remember when a visible slice of the player base was willing to put down in writing that they thought Pot of Desires wasn't good?

Speaking as someone who prioritizes inclusivity in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community, I feel pretty alright saying we probably don't shun those people enough.

Interestingly the competitive focus continued even further down the sales charts this weeks. Foolish Burial Goods fell from the Top 10 but held on at Number 11, as players continue to wait for… Frightfur Patchwork? That or just the fact that the card's obviously good, unique, and has playable potential. Probably both.

Surges of interest in Fairy Tail – Snow and Shiranui Solitaire seemed like a nod to the recent Top Cut finishes from That Grass Looks Greener decks, Back to the Front was back in the Top 15, and the biggest darkhorse of the week might've been Full Force Virus, which saw considerable demand. We also saw some notable action from both Set Rotation and Terraforming, as players place their bets on not just Dragonic Diagram, but rising enthusiasm for themes like Trickstars .

That's it for this week, but with Legendary Duelists now live in the Marketplace, we may see a different spread of cards come Monday. Join us then to find out!
