Market Watch Top 10: Pendulum Magician Hype

We're back with another Market Watch, and in the wake of a UDS Invitational where Pendulum Magicians won and took five seats in the Top 8 , cards for the deck have stormed the TCGplayer Marketplace.

Pendulum Magicians took no fewer than seven slots in our Top 10 bestseller list this week.

The strategy's success wasn't just limited to the UDS; while Regional Qualifier metagames were wide open and saw a ton of different decks in Top 8 positions, differing builds of Pendulum Magicians did extremely well in Regionals, too. One of the biggest points of variation across the board appears to be the use or nonuse of Mist Valley Apex Avian: Jeff Jones didn't run it in his UDS-winning build , but runner-up Jeremy Mitchell did , and we saw big results across both variants in Regionals.

Meanwhile the rest of the Top 10 belonged entirely to high-value splashable reprints, and one of the hottest new cards in the game, Mistar Boy. A promo in the Code of the Duelist: Special Edition, Mistar Boy has instantly found a place in Top Cut competition as a must-run in Paleozoic Frogs, which wasn't represented in the UDS Top 8 but has already made a big impression on multiple Regional Qualifiers.

So far we've seen Paleozoics Top 8 both with and without Spellbooks , as players seem to finally be embracing the Spellbook of Knowledge draw engine that was so popular in the OCG, but didn't catch on in the TCG until now. Cards for the engine have yet to return to the top of the salescharts, but with several decks running the engine successfully that could pick up.

So with no further ado, let's dive into our Top 10 for the week! These were the bestselling cards from Monday to Friday in the TCGplayer Marketplace.

#10: Wavering Eyes

No surprise to see Wavering Eyes in the Top 10 once again, even as competitors struggle to decide if it's worth playing – both in Pendulum Magicians Main Decked, and as a Side Deck choice for other strategies. It's a tremendously powerful card, but it's a bit risky in a competitive field that's still wide open at the beginning of a new format.

#9: Time Pendulumgraph

The Pendulumgraph trap card is more popular at two-per-deck than Star Pendulumgraph, leading to greater demand. Star Pendulumgraph came in at Number 12 for the week.

You can target 1 "Magician" Pendulum Monster Card in your Monster Zone or Pendulum Zone, and 1 card your opponent controls; destroy them. Then, if this effect did not destroy 2 cards, you can send 1 card on the field to the Graveyard.

#8: Astrograph Sorcerer

Offering a ton of versatility and power as well as strong utility played in conjunction with Wavering Eyes, Astrograph Sorcerer seems to be moving from an optional pick in Pendulum Magician decks gone by, to a full-fledged staple for the theme in current competition.

That said, it still didn't put up the same numbers as the must-run three-ofs, indicating some players may still not be running it… Or at least playing it in lower numbers.

Monster Effect : If a card(s) you control is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can Special Summon this card from your hand, then you can choose 1 monster in the Graveyard, Extra Deck, or that is banished, and that was destroyed this turn, and add 1 monster with the same name from your Deck to your hand. You can banish this card you control, plus 4 monsters from your hand, field, and/or Graveyard (1 each with "Pendulum Dragon", "Xyz Dragon", "Synchro Dragon", and "Fusion Dragon" in their names); Special Summon 1 "Supreme King Z-ARC" from your Extra Deck. #7: Harmonizing Magician

The Magician deck is often hailed as more of a Synchro strategy than a Pendulum strategy, and the awesome power of Harmonizing Magician is the reason why. Making one-card plays into PSY-Framelord Omega and Crimson Blader is awesome enough, but add in more demanding options like Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons and Supreme King Dragon Clear Wing and you've got a bonafide tournament terror.

This card is crazy, and it's one of the biggest reasons Pendulum Magicians are dominating right now. It offers such a nutty toolbox that Magicians are coming out on top due to sheer maneuverability, let alone resource efficiency.

When this card is Pendulum Summoned from the hand: You can Special Summon 1 "Magician" Pendulum Monster from your Deck in Defense Position, except "Harmonizing Magician", but it has its effects negated, also banish it when it leaves the field. You can only use this effect of "Harmonizing Magician" once per turn.

CARDS! You need them, too. Drawing two of them for free is, ya know. Good.

#3: Double Iris Magician

It's really no surprise that one of the best Pendulum Magician monsters was the strongest seller from the theme this week. Double Iris Magician searches Pendulumgraphs and helps you beat wins over opposing monsters, and it's been a three-of in all builds of Pendulum Magicians since it was first released. It's fitting to see it at Number 3.

#1: Mistar Boy

Missus Radiant for Water monsters, Mistar Boy's almost singlehandedly responsible for the viability of Paleozoic Frogs as we've seen it. And with multiple Regional Top 8's the first weekend out, interest in that strategy is even higher than most players anticipated.

Code of the Duelist: Special Edition boxes are scarce and still selling over MSRP, starting at $12 in the TCGplayer Marketplace. Meanwhile Mistar Boy's selling for under $1.50 as a single and is in on a declining Price Trend despite the huge demand. The supply is there to meet it, and that's kept it accessible.

Meanwhile just beyond the Top 10, Zaphion, the Timelord came in Number 11. It's become a big Side Deck pick, and we're even starting to see it in Main Decks as part of an engine with Time Maiden.

Star Pendulumgraph took the Number 12 spot as mentioned earlier, while Timestar Magician took Number 13. Proxy Dragon remained strong at Number 14, while the ongoing SPYRAL hype in the run-up to Circuit Break pushed SPYRAL Resort to Number 15.

And that's it for this week! OTS Championships means there are no North American Regionals this weekend, so we won't have many new developments to go on in Monday's Market Watch. Still, we'll see how these trends develop over the next few days, and we'll be back with another look at the action in the secondary market.

See you then!
