Market Watch Top 10: Legendary Dragon Decks Fallout

After coming out swinging last Friday, the Legendary Dragon Decks release made a bigger impact than some predicted in our last Market Watch.

Four days later, that set's still having a profound effect on the TCGplayer Marketplace. The current kings of the secondary market were back on top this week - Pot of Desires and Solemn Strike – but four of the Top 10 were still placed there by the LEDD launch.

Meanwhile we saw a few responses to recent Regional action and trends from YCS Guadalajara this past weekend, and at least one surge of sales that seems to be looking ahead to new cards from Circuit Break.

And so we embark upon another Market Watch column. If this series is new to you, a quick recap: every Monday and Friday we count down the Top 10 bestsellers in the TCG by sheer volume of cards sold. That means rarity and card value aren't a factor; we're going off the number of cards moved.

That's cool because it gives you perspective on sales trends that are usually impossible to spot if you're just looking for price spikes. When thousands of players are picking up key commons for new strategies, or niche tech picks to tackle big decks, that information can be tremendously useful for you as a collector, speculator, or tournament player.

So let's get into it! Here are the Top 10 bestselling cards this week, from Monday to Friday.

#10: Marshalling Field

The F.A. theme gets new support in Circuit Break, and it's been a deck-to-watch in the minds of some players for a while now. The F.A. can do impressive things with Marshalling Field, even though it can be a risky brick draw, and it looks like a lot of players – and maybe speculators – may have decided to pick up copies this week.

Is Marshalling Field used for anything else? Let me know down in the Comments if you think there's something else going on with this one.

If this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can add 1 "Rank-Up-Magic Argent Chaos Force" from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand.

#9: Storming Mirror Force

Storming Mirror Force saw some Regional and YCS success this past weekend; apparently enough to drive it to the Number 9 position. A non-targeting, non-destroying mass removal option is attractive in a number of situations, and “Pendulums freaking everywhere” is one of those cases. With Storming Mirror Force just getting a budget reprint in LEDD, it's an attractive pickup for anyone who didn't have their playset.

#8: Duelist Alliance

Speaking of cards that benefitted from a Legendary Dragon Decks reprint, Duelist Alliance is now available to budget players, making the top deck in competition much more accessible. It's no surprise to see a three-of must-run in that kind of strategy selling this well.

You can banish this card you control, plus 4 monsters from your hand, field, and/or Graveyard (1 each with "Pendulum Dragon", "Xyz Dragon", "Synchro Dragon", and "Fusion Dragon" in their names); Special Summon 1 "Supreme King Z-ARC" from your Extra Deck. #6: Performapal Odd-Eyes Dissolver

The sudden demand for Performapal Odd-Eyes Dissolver is more interesting. On one hand, Odd-Eyes Arc Pendulum Dragon may be generating more interest in Performapal Odd-Eyes Dissolver and Odd-Eyes decks in general. But that deck's unproven so far in tournaments; are Pendulum Magician players interested in this for some reason? Did someone run Performapal Gatlinghoul? Or is casual Odd-Eyes interest really enough to kick off a buying frenzy.

It's a weird situation no matter the cause.

#5: Dark Magician the Dragon Knight

Almost surprisingly, the only new LEDD card that disappeared from the Top 10 was Chimeratech Megafleet Dragon. Dark Magician the Dragon Knight – almost inarguably a much more casual card – continued to sell so well that it took the Number 5 spot. That's likely a mix of hardcore nostalgia and actual competitive hope for Dark Magician decks.

At the same time, we do tend to see more sales patterns suggesting casual buying trends during the week, whereas competitive trends kick in earlier and generally show more impact over the weekend. A massive number of buys from more casual players – and vendors looking to cater to them – would explain a lot of the action in this week's Top 10.

#3: Illusion Magician' rel="/db/WP-CH.asp?CN=Apprentice Illusion Magician">Apprentice Illusion Magician

Meanwhile, the number one pull from Legendary Dragon Decks continued to lead the pack. Illusion Magician' rel="/db/WP-CH.asp?CN=Apprentice Illusion Magician">Apprentice Illusion Magician was a massive money card in its original SHONEN JUMP printing, and it sits at a Venn diagram intersection between Dark Magician nostalgia, competitive potential, and sheer waifu appeal. It's a recipe that might keep Apprentice Illusion Magician in the Top 10 for weeks, minus the initial sales period when Circuit Break is released.

#2: Pot of Desires

Nothing is slowing down Pot of Desires. It's largely treated as a must-run in competition right now, it's another former money card turned budget pull, and demand for it has remained high despite all the people that have picked up their copies. I'm really not sure how long that demand's going to last, but it could easily wind up being a matter of months rather than weeks at this point.

#1: Solemn Strike

And finally, Solemn Strike's still a go-to trap card in current competition; nothing that happened at YCS Guadalajara or in Regional competition changed that over the weekend. It's still available for under five bucks too, and it's still in massive supply on TCGplayer; until that supply dips we're likely bound to see sustained demand.

That's it for this week! Circuit Break Sneak Peeks start tomorrow, but the new cards won't be available for pre-sale in the TCGplayer Marketplace until mid-week. That means we'll only begin to see them creeping into the Market Watch Top 10 on Friday, but that may give us early insight into the biggest cards from the set – and player response to new competitive opportunities.

What are YOUR bets for the top sellers in Circuit Break? Since we rank our Top 10's by sheer volume of cards sold, some of the obvious Secret Rare picks may not actually be in big enough supply to make an immediate, visible impact.

Let me know your predictions down in the Comments, and best of luck at YOUR Sneak Peeks!
