Market Watch Top 10: Circuit Break Release Day

Welcome back to another Friday Market Watch, here on the official release day of Circuit Break!

Three months ago when Code of the Duelist first dropped, we saw immediate Top 10 showings from cards that were big sellers in the pre-sale period – specifically Heavy Storm Duster and Back to the Front. This time around we saw an even lengthier period of presale offerings for Circuit Break, but no cards from CIBR actually made the Top 10 this week.

We'll need to wait until Monday to see what the biggest cards are from CIBR right out of the gates, but for now we saw more responses to the OCG's LINK VRAINS Pack , and a possible last hurrah for the biggest cards of recent weeks. Most of these are familiar territory if you're a frequent reader of our Market Watch columns, so let's get right into it.

#10: Apprentice Illusion Magician

Coming in at Number 10 just like Monday, Apprentice Illusion Magician continues to pack ‘em in at an average Market Price of over eleven dollars. A combination of fan-favorite status and competitive hope for the Dark Magician deck has kept it the most prized card from the Legendary Dragon Decks release.

You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by discarding 1 card. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 "Dark Magician" from your Deck to your hand. During damage calculation, if your other DARK Spellcaster monster battles an opponent's monster (Quick Effect): You can send this card from your hand or face-up from your field to the GY; that monster you control gains 2000 ATK/DEF during that damage calculation only.

#9: Crystron Quandax

New to the Top 10, Crystron Quandax surged in sales in response to the unveiling of Crystron Needlefiber , an upcoming Link-2 monster from the LINK VRAINS Pack . You make it with any two monsters, at least one of which must be a Tuner. It's got 1500 ATK, the much-coveted “double down-left and down-right” Link Arrows, and an effect that immediately Special Summons a Level 3 or lower Tuner from your deck or hand when it's Link Summoned. You negate the effect of whatever you Special Summon, but that monster is still valid Material for another Summon and makes your Link Summon a break-even trade on card economy.

More than that, Needlefiber has an ability that works during your opponent's Main Phase or Battle Phase; you banish it to Special Summon a Tuner Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck. That means free access to Formual Synchron, Coral Dragon, or our Number 9 bestseller for the week, Crystron Quandax. That was enough to push Quandax into the Top 10, amidst tons of conversation about Needlefiber.

#8: Rescue Ferret

Speaking of the LINK VRAINS Pack , Rescue Ferret returned after taking Number 3 over the weekend, still in the Top 10 this week at Number 8, again spurred on by the reveal of Cherubini, Black Angel of the Burning Abyss . We talked about its use with Rescue Ferret earlier in the week, but the gist is that Cherubini amps up Burning Abyss to a point where they could return to competition. And if that happens, Rescue Ferret effectively becomes a recyclable double Tour Guide From the Underworld.

After an uptick in its average Market Price, Rescue Ferret's still sitting at the $8 mark as the speculation on it starts to cool off.

#7: Duelist Alliance

Previously one of the few barriers to entry for Pendulum Magicians, the reprint of Duelist Alliance in Legendary Dragon Decks brought its price way down and skyrocketed demand. Even with SPYRAL set to take center stage at YCS Dallas this weekend, sales remained high for the Pendulum Magician searcher.

#6: Odd-Eyes Arc Pendulum Dragon

More surprising, demand for Odd-Eyes Arc Pendulum Dragon exceeded that of lots of competitive cards this week, despite there still being no real consensus about a competitive Odd-Eyes deck now, or in the near future. It's been kind of weird to see Arc Pendulum Dragon selling so consistently the past week and a half.

#5: Astrograph Sorcerer

Number 5 on Monday, Astrograph Sorcerer was back at Number 5 once again, as it appears that more players are still investing in Pendulum Magicians. With the price of SPYRAL cards continuing to… spiral… we may see Pendulum Magicians become the budget deck of choice in the wake of Circuit Break. It seems like a lot of players are still willing to bet on the deck's competitive status through the weekend and beyond.

You can banish this card you control, plus 4 monsters from your hand, field, and/or Graveyard (1 each with "Pendulum Dragon", "Xyz Dragon", "Synchro Dragon", and "Fusion Dragon" in their names); Special Summon 1 "Supreme King Z-ARC" from your Extra Deck. #4: Terraforming

Terraforming's a must-run in SPYRAL and Trickstar decks, and the release of Destrudo the Lost Dragon's Frisson – which is commonly played with Ancient Fairy Dragon, Dragon Ravine, and your Field Spell of choice – spiked its demand even further last weekend. It continued to be a hot pick through the week, coming in once again at Number 4.

It's interesting to note that despite its low rarity, Destrudo the Lost Dragon's Frisson didn't make the Top 10 during CIBR pre-sales. It was a prime candidate to maybe attain that Heavy Storm Duster and Back to the Front early hype, but it didn't get there, despite the demand for related cards like Terraforming.

#3: Proxy Dragon

Up from Number 8 over the weekend, Proxy Dragon's still one of the two biggest Link Monsters in the format, matched only by Decode Talker – a card that was released earlier, and which more players already have. Proxy Dragon's still on a neutral price trend as huge supply keeps its value low.

#1: Solemn Strike

And Solemn Strike, still an incredibly powerful trap card played in most competitive decks POST-CIBR.

For weeks now, we've seen Pot of Desires and Solemn Strike dominate the sales charts with their reprintings, and it's kind of incredible to see how popular both cards still are.

Pot of Desires seems locked at about three bucks, while Solemn Strike has settled at a solid six dollars for weeks now. We'll have to see if Circuit Break can knock them off the radar for a while.

And that's it for now! In just three days we'll see what the secondary market looks like after the impact of Circuit Break and the immediate results from YCS Dallas. Will SPYRAL hit it big as most players are expecting? Which decks will survive the SPYRAL onslaught? And how will emerging trends from the YCS affect demand in the TCGplayer Marketplace?

Join us on Monday to find out!
