Market Watch Top 10: Six Samurai Stomp Everything

Welcome back! It's been a week since our last Market Watch, so this time around we're looking at a full seven days of sales data from the TCGplayer Marketplace.

YCS San Diego is said and done, and Spirit Warriors hit retail on Friday. Today's Top 10 collects sales info from Monday last week to this Monday, and yes, that means Spirit Warriors was only in full release for about three days of the observed period. That makes it even more impressive that Spirit Warriors – specifically Six Samurai – took a whopping nine slots in the Top 10.

Samurai basically stomped everything.

The Weather Painters and Magical Musketeers were nowhere to be found in the top salescharts, in part owing to their higher price point and in some cases slim supply due to short printing. A lack of results at YCS San Diego didn't help either, killing Musketeers' hype over the weekend.

But even with that in mind, the overwhelming demand for Six Samurai is surprising. These are smash-hit numbers for a deck that nobody's really talking about for competition. Is this nostalgia? Competitive speculation? Do players just want to pick up something different to fool around with at locals?

Maybe it's a combination of all three, as well as the fact that some of us have long memories: it can be easy to forget that years ago, Six Samurai were a Championship-winning deck, and that they've often rebounded back into competition to steal wins. It was really just the Limiting of Gateway of the Six that reigned the deck in. Or maybe it's just that despite a lack of success overseas, the new Secret Six Samurai cards look pretty solid overall.

Let's get right into the Top 10 and start exploring these cards, starting with a pick that's emblematic of this week in the marketplace.

#10: Shien's Smoke Signal

Three of the five Main Decked Secret Six Samurai cards are searchable with Shien's Smoke Signal, as are some of the strategy's key enablers. Smoke Signal's a powerful searcher that can grab combo-starting cards to even out your hand, as well as adaptable extenders to help you maneuver around your opponent. It's no surprise to see it selling strongly; you're going to run three.

#9: Legendary Six Samurai - Kageki

Speaking of those enablers, the six and a half year-old Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki still carries weight as a top Normal Summon for the strategy, plunking other Six Samurai into play, buffing Bushido Counter cards, and boosting to 1700 ATK in an instant.

The Six Samurai strategy has always been about spamming Special Summons, and while that's generally a means to your opponent's end through raw damage, Kageki's Special Summon can also trigger powerful effects by Special Summoning stuff like the new Secret Six Samurai – Kizaru. Kizaru's especially brutal, turning an arguable over-extension with Kageki into an instant cover-your-butt +1 of card economy that also fields 3600 damage.

More on Kizaru later.

#8: Secret Six Samurai – Hatsume

Searchable with Shien's Smoke Signal and packing 1600 ATK, Secret Six Samurai – Hatsume's another free +1 once your graveyard's loaded, reverse toolboxing for damage, useful effects, and more often than not Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En.

With Gateway of the Six still Limited this deck revolves around Shi En, and Hatsume can both keep it in the game, and get you a second one by reviving your first to a Main Monster Zone. Since the Six Samurai deck only really goes into Link Monsters off a Soul Charge play that double Shi En recovery play is really important.

Roll in the signature Secret Six protection effect and you've got a very strong piece of the Six Sam puzzle. Occupying the deck's Water slot is nice too, since there isn't much competition these days from The Six Samurai - Yaichi and Legendary Six Samurai – Shinai. Hatsume's a powerful must-run that anchors this strategy.

#7: Secret Six Samurai - Genba

Also searchable with Smoke Signal, Genba's a Tuner that grants you an instant +1 provided you've got something to recur in your removed zone. That makes it a bit of an uneven opening draw, and it's a bit awkward as a Normal Summon at times, but there's definitely potential there. It's generally viewed as a one-of and it's kind of surprising to see it outselling Hatsume.

#6: Asceticism of the Six Samurai

A classic speed OTK card, Asceticism of the Six Samurai throws unexpected damage on the field to KO your opponent when they don't suspect it. It makes the Six Samurai strategy a bit tougher to play against, and on another level it's also an enabler for those “trigger on Special Summon” effects.

It works especially well with the new cards, and the fact that it doesn't have a once-per-turn limit has always made it a frightening card to play against, along with Cunning of the Six Samurai and the newer Secret Skills of the Six Samurai. That said, its biggest function now may be reminiscent of past eras – it's a huge Synchro enabler, searching out Synchro Materials to make Shi En happen.

#5: Secret Six Samurai - Fuma

A Level 1 Tuner that can also recruit from your deck, Secret Six Samurai – Fuma looks a bit subpar at first, but its ability to just grab answers from your deck is huge. Samurai can struggle to rout big boss monsters, but slamming Fuma into an opposing monster just to get to Legendary Six Samurai – Enishi is often enough to save the game or win it outright.

Enishi's better than ever thanks to the number of effects that capitalize on banished cards, and while you'll probably want to play multiple copies of Fuma, you can often Special Summon it straight from your deck thanks to Asceticism and an un-boosted Kageki.

#4: Secret Six Samurai – Kizaru

With 1900 ATK and a free +1 search that builds combos for free, it's difficult to overstate the worth of Secret Six Samurai – Kizaru. The only thing keeping Kizaru from being totally nuts is that its Earth attribute and effect restriction keeps you from searching out Grandmaster of the Six Samurai or Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan for easy three-monster fields.

Regardless, it's a free Tuner, a free Enishi, or a free Hatsume or Kageki to keep your plays going next turn, and it's one of the reasons this deck is worth playing (at least at the local level).

#3: Soul Charge

The Six Samurai stack monsters to the graveyard pretty aggressively for Hatsume and older cards like Cunning and Double-Edged Sword Technique. Soul Charge functions as a faster, less restrictive, and less costly version of Backs To The Wall, and while it's seeing play in big decks like SPYRAL right now, it's very likely the interest in Six Samurai was what shot it to Number 3 this week – SPYRALs never got it anywhere near the Top 10.

One of the strongest spell cards in the game, Soul Charge is perennially powerful, and its recent reprint has created deep supply to meet the demand.

#2: Six Samurai United

Pot of Greed for Six Samurai? Yes please. Rifling through your cards to rake in free attackers and combo pieces, Six Samurai United makes so many of this deck's core plays free, while also building them out with extender cards that escalate a two-turn game plan into OTK's. No mystery here; United's a must-run at three for Six Samurai, and it's been that way ever since it was first printed.

#1: Legendary Six Samurai - Kizan

And finally, Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan is still a huge three-of for this deck. It's an 1800 ATK beater that boosts to 2100 ATK, and more importantly it's got the easiest Special Summon effect in the theme. It's a great attacker, excellent Synchro Material with Fuma, and just advances every line of play you generally want to pursue.

With an amazing ability to build counters on must-resolve cards like Six Samurai United, Gateway of the Six, and even Shien's Dojo, Kizan has synergy with almost everything Samurai duelists use. In addition, the rewards for building a three-monster field with this deck have never been higher thanks to Secret Six Samurai – Rihan.

Kizan's never been better, and if Samurai are going to rule the Marketplace then it's not surprising to see it wind up on top.

Looking beyond the Top 10 it's basically Samurai all the way down. Shien's Dojo wasn't a big card in the past, but all the new Special Summon effects push it over the top. The strategy's so reliant on Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En right now that Dojo's more valuable; it came in at Number 11 for the week. Speaking of Shi En, that card deservedly took the Number 12 spot.

Pot of Desires took lucky Number 13 – unsurprising as the most popular card of the year, and the obvious pick for the top non-Spirit Warriors card. From there it was Double-Edged Sword Technique at Number 14, and the new Secret Six Samurai – Rihan at Number 15.

We also saw some notable niche interest in Glow-Up Bulb, recently reprinted and creeping into Top Cut decks for Naturia Beast plays. Dakota Smith was one of the more prominent players to run it at YCS San Diego; he took Glow-Up Bulb to the Top 32 in SPYRALs . Honest and Ties of the Brethren both saw big sales to a more limited buyer base as well, with Honest being a near-staple in Trickstars, and Ties seeing play there too, Special Summoning stuff like Barrier Statue of the Heavens.

Are Six Samurai ready for the competitive big time? With Gateway of the Six still Limited the answer is “probably not,” but the sheer volume of sales backing the theme suggests that you may see it in locals and Regionals anyways.

We'll be back on Friday to see how the Samurai enthusiasm pans out – see you then!
