Market Watch Top 10: Suddenly, Weather Painters

The latest tournament in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series was held in Prague over the weekend, but as we wait to see the fallout of that event, we've hit some Spirit Warrior swerves.

Six Samurai dominated the TCGplayer marketplace last week, and they still held on to four of the spots in the Top 10 over the weekend. Honest exploded to the Number 2 position on Friday as Trickstar hype continued to build, and Pot of Desires returned to its bestselling position. But it all begged one question.

Where was the rest of Spirit Warriors?

We got our answer this weekend, as The Weather Painters saw a huge spike in demand; the theme took three places in the Top 10 and generated lots of action just below the Number 10 spot. Today we'll take a look at what's still hot from last week, and what broke into the top salescharts while YCS Prague raged on.

#10: The Weather Cloudy Canvas

To start, our first surprise of this Market Watch: The Weather Cloudy Canvas. I'm actually surprised this isn't The Weather Snowy Canvas, the theme's key search card, though that card did come in at Number 13 for the weekend.

Cloudy Canvas is very solid for a few reasons, mainly relevance: halving a monster's ATK is something you'll want to do really frequently, even if it means you wind up taking some direct damage to secure your board. The ease of use makes it one of the best ways to banish your Weather monsters too, and that makes it a popular combo card. Compare it to Rainy Canvas and its limited utility against decks running little backrow, or the more late game-y Sunny Canvas, and you can see a marked difference.

#9: Honest

Honest spiked to Number 2 last week after Trickstars took the runner-up spot at YCS San Diego and continued to do well in Regional Qualifiers. It dropped to Number 9 over the weekend, but sold to a wider group of buyers. Some duelists clearly got ahead of the trend, but Honest remains hugely affordable due to its number of printings. The fact that it held on through the weekend likely shows a continued interest in the Trickstar strategy and potentially the Ties of the Brethren variant.

#8: The Weather Thundery Canvas

The Weather Thundery Canvas and The Weather Auroral Canvas may be a bit slower than their spell card counterparts, but both offer play-breaking effects that can help Weather Painters put up a fight against more acknowledged combo decks. While Auroral Canvas offers an even trade of card economy in its ability to disrupt searches, Thundery Canvas outs on-field threats and can potentially make a hard plus once your Weather Painter returns to the field, provided it's removing an Extra Deck monster.

It's interesting that while we often see on-theme cards being designed as traps largely to add a bit of cost to powerful effects these days, both of the Canvas traps pointedly leverage a surprise factor. While Thundery Canvas would've been flat out better as a Continuous Spell, there's still some advantage to be gained from flipping it at the right time, and lots of Weather Painter effects can put it into play face-up without you ever having to wait a turn to activate it.

It's a must-run, though it's a bit surprising to see it outselling so many actual Weather Painter monsters themselves.

#7: Six Samurai United

Down from Number 1 last week, Six Samurai United is an excellent on-theme “draw 2” spell that's only gotten better with age… and the release of new Special Summon effects in the Six Samurai arsenal. The flagging demand demonstrates a bit of a slump in the insane level of Six Samurai hype we saw at the outset of Spirit Warriors, but the theme's clearly still generating big interest.

#6: The Weather Painter Thunder

With an effect that lets you toolbox your deck to rotate through your theme-stamped Continuous Spell and Trap cards, The Weather Painter Thunder blends ease of use with a very strong effect, offering immediate payoff and graveyard infrastructure for future plays down the line. Its 1700 ATK makes it the strategy's best Normal Summon attacker, and it stands on its own better than The Weather Painter Snow, which has a better search trick but requires more support.

While the high price of the short printed Snow will probably keep it from Cracking the Top 10, Thunder's currently the priciest of the remaining Main Deck monsters for the theme, which runs a bit counter to how we normally see demand for casual themes play out.

#5: Secret Six Samurai – Hatsume

Hatsume's stood at the forefront of our discussions on Six Samurai in our last two Market Watches, and for good reason: its ability to revive a fallen Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En so you can Synchro Summon another one to your Extra Monster Zone effectively anchors the Samurai strategy as we now know it. Hatsume's been on a small downward Price Trend over the weekend, but that's only kept it accessible as more and more players snap up their copies.

#4: Cosmic Cyclone

Once a $30 luxury removal card, Cosmic Cyclone continues to appear in both Main and Side Decks to counter everything from Pendulum Magicians to True Dracos. It's an excellent choice in a format that continues to be mixed, and even as we see Twin Twisters and Mystical Space Typhoon appear in tournaments, the newly-reprinted $2 banish spell may be the most popular backrow removal in competition today.

While its price once kept Cosmic Cyclone out of the hands of budget players, it's now tremendously affordable, and players are still flocking to it appropriately. It's not a must-run in all decks, but it's definitely a must-own.

#3: Secret Six Samurai - Kizaru

An awesome search card that offers big damage and a ton of utility in established Six Samurai plays, Kizaru offers free card economy and hand fixing for almost zero set-up. Though it can't search the two cards you might want the most – Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan and Grandmaster of the Six Samurai – it can get you to everything else, and that adaptability is one of the factors making Six Sams so tempting in the wake of Spirit Warriors.

#2: Secret Six Samurai – Fuma

Still the most expensive of the new Six Samurai cards, Fuma searches answers when you need to out a problem monster, it puts together your combos, it chump blocks attacks, and it's a Tuner for your all-important Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En plays.

So far we've seen Fuma go from Number 5 to Number 3 and now to Number 2. That demonstrates continued interest in the theme, but also rising investment as players commit to the priciest card of the bunch. At this point it's getting safer to say that we're going to see players trying to pilot Six Samurai at Regionals. Will they Top 8? That remains to be seen. But we're definitely going to see attempts to run Six Sams competitively.

#1: Pot of Desires

And finally, Pot of Desires was once again the bestselling card of the week. The clear winner for the biggest card of 2016, more and more strategies keep finding ways to adopt it, and for now, it remains a dividing line between SPYRALs and everything else. It's kind of playing a cool role right now, giving some of the less successful decks a bit of a leg up against the deck-to-beat.

What happened beyond the Top 10 this weekend? Weather Painters were dominant, with The Weather Painter Cloud, The Weather Painter Sun, The Weather Painter Snowy Canvas, and The Weather Painter Rain taking the Number 11, Number 12, Number 13, and Number 14 spots respectively. That's way more demand for Weather Painter cards than most of us expected.

Beyond that it was a mixed bag of Samurai enthusiasm, with Shien's Dojo at Number 15, Shien's Smoke Signal at Number 17, and Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan at Number 18. Solemn Strike came in at Number 16 and Magical Musket Mastermind Zakiel rounded out the salescharts at Number 19.

That's it for today, but stick with us this week for more articles and some big updates to the Deck Archive. We'll be working all week long to bring you Top Cut lists from YCS Prague, so keep an eye out for those.

Thanks for reading!
