Market Watch Top 10: More Tech From YCS Prague

Another Monday, another Market Watch… with some more competitive developments!

Last week we started to see responses to some of the bigger tech picks and competitive trends coming out of YCS Prague , in our Friday Market Watch. Eater of Millions and PSY-Framegear Epsilon broke into the Top 10, the first coming off a starring role in Trickstars at the YCS, and the second played to beat Trickstar Reincarnation. We saw continued enthusiasm for Honest, too, and it was easy to guess that the market was reacting to the latest bout of Trickstar success.

Meanwhile Pot of Desires and Proxy Dragon took the 2nd and 3 rd bestseller spots; Cosmic Cyclone outpaced Mystical Space Typhoon and Twin Twisters by miles; and the Six Samurai made another big showing taking three spots in the Top 10.

This time around we’re looking at sales over the weekend. Six Samurai continued to be strong, and the Trickstar-influenced cards from last week did well too. Interest in the pairing of Scapegoat and Missus Radiant spiked, which could be another aftershock from Trickstars. Generic splashables played a big role in the Top 10 as well, and two more key cards from YCS Prague clicked into place with the secondary market.

Let’s look at the first of those – a card we’ve covered here on TCGplayer in recent discussions – and kick off our countdown for the weekend. First up…

#10: Mind Crush

It’s back! We’ve talked about Mind Crush a few times here on TCGplayer over the past weeks , since it’s a great answer to a wealth of search effects but more importantly Evenly Matched. When your opponent telegraphs Evenly Matched by moving straight into their Battle Phase without playing any cards, flipping Mind Crush robs them of their plans, depriving them of their Battle Phase in return for no benefit.

Mind Crush is a flexible answer to a number of situations, and a topnotch solution to one of the most feared cards in the format. It popped up at YCS Prague, and you should get ready to see it at your locals and Regionals. If you’re looking to beat Evenly Matched it’s one of your best bets.

#9: Missus Radiant

Scapegoat’s become a major factor in tournament competition, blocking damage and then turning into fodder for Link Summons. Link Spider and Missus Radiant are generally the two most common Links to begin with, and while those plays came to prominence in Trickstars, Scapegoat’s not unique to that strategy. Scapegoat didn’t make the Top 10 this week, but it did see huge sales to a smaller number of buyers, which suggests heavy speculation. Meanwhile Missus Radiant took Number 9.

#8: Eater of Millions

Up from Number 10 last week, Eater of Millions is a Neo-Spacian Grandmole from hell that outs big boss monsters, as well as free Link Summoning Material that won’t eat your Normal Summon.

Once an uncommon choice in Trickstars, it was huge at YCS Prague, played in at least four of the Top Cut builds. There are very few flex spots in the Trickstar strategy, but Eater of Millions is a great fit offering a ton of impact for very little cost.

#7: Solemn Strike

Up from Number 9 last week, Solemn Strike was a big hit over the weekend. It’s a perennially powerful card with an amazing effect, and it’s especially relevant right now as more decks seek to play second and blow through what were, until recently, undefended fields.

#6: Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit

Returning to the Top 10 countdown after missing last week, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit’s gone from a played, but questioned hand trap pick at the beginning of this format, back to a three-of staple. The updated Advanced Format did little to mitigate the need for hand traps, and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit’s still one of the best.

#5: Proxy Dragon

Down from an almost uncanny spike to Number 3 last week, Proxy Dragon’s back down to Number 5, which is still more interest than many would expect it to generate. Proxy Dragon’s a tremendously important card for almost any deck that relies on Link Summons, thanks to its flexible Link Materials and its Left and Right Link Arrows.

Whenever Proxy Dragon surges it’s likely because more duelists are picking up Link Summoning, and the shift of Trickstars from a one-plan combo deck into Link Summoning territory coincides with that quite nicely. At the same time SPYRALs run it too, so no one single deck is getting a clear nod here.

It may be that as the format becomes more refined, more players are committing to one of those two top decks.

#4: Gold Sarcophagus

Gold Sarcophagus featured in Lightsworn Infernoids and Lightsworn Zombie decks last weekend at YCS Prague, largely to Special Summon the reusable Giant Rex. A straight 1-for-1 into a 2000 ATK Level 4 for use as Xyz Material is pretty solid, and when you can revive it every turn by banishing it from the graveyard for cards like Fairy Tail – Snow you’ve got a really powerful one-card engine.

Fresh off a much-discussed runner-up finish in the hands of Elias Stahlberg , Gold Sarcophagus is finally back in demand again, after years of living in obscurity.

Where are the Six Sams, you ask? Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan was a niche pick this week, selling in droves to a very small group of buyers. But Six Samurai United took the Number 3 spot, while Number 2 went to…

#2: Asceticism of the Six Samurai

Late last week we saw an OCG 1st Place Samurai list posted over on The Organization , running triple Asceticism of the Six Samurai. That appears to be what spurred massive demand for the card over the weekend, driving it all the way to Number 2. Asceticism works by targeting one of your Six Samurais, and then Special Summoning a different one from your deck with the same ATK. The pairing that draws the most discussion there is an un-boosted Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki and the new Secret Six Samurai – Fuma.

Buit the OCG deck ran more Samurai than one might expect, pairing Secret Six Samurai – Genba with Spirit of the Six Samurai at 500 ATK, Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan with The Six Samurai – Zanji, and Legendary Six Samurai – Enishi with Secret Six Samurai – Doji. By adding Spirit, Zanji, and Doji to the regular lineup, you get a strategy where Asceticism is almost always live, more effects can be activated, and more damage can be dealt on the fly to steal games.

Is that approach going to push Six Samurai into Top Cut action? Was there another factor to Asceticism’s swift uptick in demand? For now we don’t know, but it’s an issue to watch out for.

Beyond the Top 10 we saw The Weather Thundery Canvas at Number 11, indicating some sustained interest in the Weather Painter theme. Cosmic Cyclone missed the Top 10, but still outsold other removal options at Number 12.

As mentioned previously Scapegoat and Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan sold tons of copies, but only to a very limited pool of buyers – likely the result of speculation more than play-oriented trends. PSY-Framegear Epsilon sold in similar numbers to a similar audience after selling so strongly last week, and we saw more niche interest in Blackwing – Steam the Cloak and Cosmic Compass; two cards that both generate Tokens for potential Link Summon shenanigans.

That’s it for the weekend, but we’ll be back on Friday with another look at new shifts in the secondary market, courtesy of the TCGplayer Marketplace.
